Title: What does your mouse pointer look like?
Post by: chris on October 09, 2003, 05:41:33 PM
It may seem trivial, but we all spend a long time looking at it, it it needs to be functional and obvious where the "point" of the pointer is.

I use the standard OS2+ raised red pointer, and my busy pointer is a custom "Zzz" design, which pays homage to the OS1.x default while being updated to 2.x design (it fits in quite well, it should be the default IMHO :-))

So.. what does your mouse pointer look like?

A pointer.

With a shadow. :-)

I use the standard Amiga mouse pointer on all my Amigas, and on Windows, too. (i found an "Amiga" pointer set for windows somewhere).

A joint that smokes when busy. Did it a few years back to make my mates chuckle, but i cant be bothered to change it back and it looks alright so...

Oh, the point is in the cherry.

On the Amiga I use the high-res version of the bog-standard pointer (on a screen 640*256 :-o ).

On the PC I'm using a Mac theme (but keep changing the backdrop ;-)) so my pointer is black with the watch instead of the sand-timer :-D

Speaking of pointers, one of my pet peeves lately has been that I've got a beautiful 800X600 Picasso II/CGX v4.2 workbench, with a nasty looking pointer. Is there any way to get a nice sharp pointer that will do the rest of the system justice? I've tried the built in "hi-res" pointer, but it still looks pretty bad.

Sorry to hijack, but this seems to fit the discussion!

Thx,
98PaceCar

I've had so many pointers that I'm sick of all the fancy stuff you can do with them.  So I use a plain jane standard white pointer with black border.  In hommage to "sleepy" the 1.x busy pointer, that is my default wait pointer.

"Sleepy" rules!

My pointer (http://www.christianrosentreter.com/show.php?lang=en&request=MII02) :-D

dunno, but I use it since years. Couldn't work anymore with a different pointer. :-)

I draw my own pointers.

I drew one that I used for about 3 years,
and then I drew the one I still use.
Its half a year old now.

I wish I could show them,
But I am planning to upload them to aminet.

To help immortalize Sleepy... I changed my avatar from my "phoenyx" to the "Sleepy" busy pointer I use.

I use the same pointer-look on both AmigaOS and Windows. It's a windows-style pointer but it's red with a white border instead of white with a black border. For the busypointer I have the same pointer but with a "Z" below it.

Babylon 5, oriented so that the cargo "mandibles" aim up and left, thus serving as the point of the pointer, with a "5" just above the station, shifting rapidly from red to blue.  I don't use much else currently from the B5 II Entertainment Utility, but the mouse pointer has persisted.  It does a neat little transition effect between a government-type seal and a big "5" for the busy image.  One o' these dang days, I should get a skinner like WindowBlinds and do a proper B5 theme.  Or even two, one "fannish" and one as if you're linked into B5 by either StellarCom or the BABCOM system itself!

I have a version of WB with a jet fighter icon for a pointer, I used to edit it quite a lot.

Right now on my Mac I have a black arrow which changes to a cursor placing icon when it needs to.

I like (semy) transparent pointer... :)

(What can be achieved by a pattern inside the pointer...)

But I would really love to see really transparent pointer... :)

I'm amazed this thread is so popular

I've finally managed to get a grab of my busy pointer: (http://homepages.enterprise.net/cavan/temp/busy.png)

Any chance we can see PointerMI Martin?  :-)

I was given a Amiga 2000, and it had Workbench 1.3 and I did not like the ugly pointer.

I, in turn gave away the Amiga 2000 as well, it would have cost too much to upgrade.

I have the standard Win XP pointer, points to the left, and has a drop shadow.

Does yours point to the left?

WHOA  :-o   Don't answer that, I don't really want to know.... ;-)

Whi not ;-) This is what it looks like:

Please note: This is not the standard pointer of OS4, just a contribution.

Just the standard OS3.5 one:

Of course, in AWeb-II it changes to a hand over a hyperlink!

Macs & Windows use white (or black) because of their monochrome heritage!

So, who'll be the FIRST to minimize their avatar and use THAT
as their POINTER?

(BTW- Anyone found a Windows keyboard with a LIT-active CAPS
LOCK key?)

My A1200 pointer looks like the default WB3.0 one, only in blue instead of red  :-)

Oddly enough, my mouse pointer looks like, well a pointer really. This is one of those things I never really was bothered to fart about with too much :-)

I give up, what does my mouse pointer look like??

i'm vaguely colour blink and can't really tell the difference between black and red, so unable to play snooker, and stopping at non funtional traffic lights (can't really see the red in the sunlight as i can't see the "glow").

anyway

i have the Mouse pointer from OS3.5 (no really) it looks like a mouse! i had to reverse the colours to look right on my cyberGFX system (white body, black outline) and put a drop shadow underneath with a patterned shape same as the mouse  just below it.
(one pixel the tranparent colour, one pixel black one pixel the transparent colour.... etc.

looks quite nifty. i can't really remember what my busy pointer looked like as i didn't see it that oftern ;)

You can't see the difference between black and red? I'm colourblind and I have no such trouble, it's quite unusual. Apparently it can occur with Protanopia, but usually only when the red is particularly dark. Protanopia is red-green colourblindness but with the light deficiency you describe. I have Deuteranopia, which is just red-green colourblindness.

*Cough* er... was that off-topic? ;-)

yeah its basicly inable to tell the difference between writing in red ink and black ink.... plus when my email comes in and its in red for urgent, i have an excuse to ignore it

*AHEM* *cough topic*

that_punk_guy: IMHO it's not entirely off topic cause there are a lot colorblind people (I have 1 cousin who also has red-green) and people making websites and user interfaces should be made more aware of this problem.

Actually.. It'd be good satring point to a new thread.
