Title: Political Correctness comes to the Tech Arena
Post by: iamaboringperson on November 27, 2003, 05:50:21 PM
It's 'un-PC' to use the terms 'master' and 'slave' on computer hardware, apparently!

"A Los Angeles county official has asked computer and video equipment vendors to consider eliminating the terms "master" and "slave" from equipment because they may be considered offensive."

Read about it here (http://theage.com.au/articles/2003/11/27/1069825905867.html) ...

That's just silly.

Next there'll be a ban on the "Male" and "Female" terminology used for cable connectors, because same-sex couples find it offensive.

I've heard some crap in my time but this...

How many computers do we have that will take offence?

Should they be called 'equal rights' channels where either hard drive and/or storage media has the right to boot first? Or not boot at all??

Pathetic!

Should we cease calling various electrical & audio connections 'Male' & 'Female' because it may be considered sexist???

Shakes head

In addition to using "master" and "slave" terminology in the tech world, I just noticed that when I submitted my previous post I got a message saying "Thank you for your submission"... maybe there's an underlying S&M theme to more tech stuff than first meets the eye!  :-D

I've seen this all over in the last week. I'm amazed it took this long to get here.

Oh, it's just not about Master and Slave.

Oh, The whole Male/Female connector thing has been done...
It's now....    Receptacle and Jack.

From a newsletter I get:

Los Angeles County officials have asked that manufacturers,
suppliers and contractors stop using the terms "master" and "slave"
regarding computer hard drives, saying such terms are unacceptable
and offensive.  Additionally, the term "e-mail" will now be called
"e-person letter," "dumb terminals" will are now "CPU-challenged
monitors" and "Unix" will be referred to as "sexually dysfunctional
operating system."  Obviously, "fingering" is now banned entirely.

"For example, we've read of the 1999 incident in which a mayoral aide (temporarily) lost his job for using the word 'niggardly' in a staff meeting, even though the word's origins have nothing to do with race, and even though the aide used the word correctly (to mean 'miserly' or 'stingy')"

Thanks America, you gave us good things like the Hotdog and Elvis, but with your sue everyone mentality you spawned the political correctness madness that is killing us all.

Im off to kill babies

My mum got really annoyed at my dad once, when he referred to connectors as male or female :-)

One funny thing about that article is that someone obviously considers that "primary" and "secondary" don't have the same implication as "master" and "slave", if you look at it from the same blinkered perspective.  One implies it is more important than the other.

"First" and "second" also do as well.  Damn, no competitions anymore!

In May 2003, a black employee of the county's Probation Department filed a discrimination complaint with the Office of Affirmative Action Compliance after spotting "master" and "slave" labels on a videotape machine, whereupon the Internal Services Department was obligated to issue notification requesting that vendors refrain from using the master/slave terminology.

gee, it must have been a BLACK VCR. This isn't about being politically correct. It's about being ignorant. That has got to be the most stupid thing I ever heard.

Man, I'm beginning to think a majority of our population is inbred...oh wait, would that be 'interfamily-sexually concieved -people' to be PC??

What a joke.

Shall we ban that un-PC term 'Amiga' too, while we're at it? Very sexist title, I've always thought... ;-)

The term "PC" should be banned too, as PCs aren't very politically correct... it's not like Microsoft tolerates competition... :-)

That's why when I say I'm talking about the President I use his full name ("I hate George Bush!"), while referring to the other meaning I usually add helpful words like "I love a hairy bush!").  :-D

While I worked for EDS, our CEO at the time would always sign his corporate emails as "Brown, Dick". Not sure he took his job all that seriously considering the stock went from $73 down to $13 (at which point he got the big boot).

I guess that they will also have to take away the word "server"..   What kind of person would want their computers to "serve" anyone....?

If our country is the only one with PC, (political correctness, of which I think is a crock of @$#@$#) , then good for all of the other countries...

This PC is getting way way out of hand....

I will stick with Master and Slave....

My only question though is.... what about SCSI III ... there is not Master and No Slave....  What do you call the different units (besides their ID #)...  all slaves...  Hal...

LOL looks like PC has a virus called "stupidity" but the problem is that "individuals are smart but people are flighty dumb animals"  (as in sheep :-P )

I remember when I saw a PC version of Cinderella with the "two not socially sterotypical ideal sisters" :-D  or the Bible that said "God (he/she)" <----dont start!!

this is all sheer lunacy :-x  will we have to call gender-benders "sexyually open minded adaptors" :-?  ;-)

Political Correctness trully is incorrect.

I actually saw a comic strip in a local paper. It was SWAMP. There is a duck and he says "Quack" then the nitpicker bird says to him "You can't use that word again, it's politically incorrect". Made me laugh, because thats how all this political crapness is getting in the real world. What ever happened to "sticks and stones will break my bones, but names will never hurt me"..

The person offended by the labelling in question is certainly mentally challenged and due to cognitive restraints would be in the rather unusual position of.... no no... this guy is just dumb.

DUMB!  How can a living organism conceive of such stupidity?!

One of the best examples of ignorant, offended, cerebrally-challenged persons, was related by a Maths Major when this story broke on /.

It seems that a group was exiting from a Maths exam into the passageway.   The story-relator turned, and said to his companions- "H##, I hate intergrating!"

A strident female blocked the group in the passage and pointed her finger at the speaker.  She publicly (and loudly) condemmed him for what she perceived as an unwillingness to refrain from racial-discrimination!

Since most in that passageway were in mathematics, she received laughter from ALL sides.
(Intergrating is a mathematical operation)
