Title: A4000 not booting!
Post by: Cranched on October 08, 2003, 04:12:02 PM
We have an A4000 with toaster and amilink that is not booting. It powers up, but disk light remains on constantly, with no video output. We've pulled plug and replaced, done the vulcan death grip reboot. Any suggestions on what to check first?

Disk light the floppy or HD light?

Had to replace the original IDE hard drive on an A4000 a couple of years ago with similar symptoms (HD light).  It would boot up only sometimes, then less often, finally never.  Now it's quite reliable.

Can you boot from a floppy (OS disk)?  Might use a cleaning disk on your floppy drive 1st if you haven't used it much..  Might even need to unplug the offending hard drive.

Boot from another drive in the early startup menu (hold both mouse buttons down)?

if that's not it, unplug all cards, try again..
hardware debug time.

If it`s the floppy light, check the cable.
I rebuilt my 4000 with the floppy cable plugged in the wrong way around and the light stayed on and stopped booting.

If it`s the HD light, unplug the HD and make sure the floppy drive is empty and boot up. If it gets to the "Insert Disk" screen, then then either the IDE cable is in wrong or loose, the HD could be toast, or the onboard IDE port is fried.

Sorry to be vague, both lights (green and yellow) are on continuously. I'll try booting from floppy tomorrow. Thanks for the help!
