The Amiga.org staff are proud to release the interview we did with Oliver Hannaford-Day, about the Coldfire accelerator boards for the 'classic Amigas'.

when i saw the videos/pictures etc , i got abit..WOOOOT? when i saw u let the people fiddle with your card/project , didnt you get a tad "NONONONO dont do that!!!" feeling when you saw all them people putting their fingerprints and power :D onto it ? etc ?
anyway a big plus from me, holding it my hands makes it "beliveable" , but i once hold a shark in my hand (oooh..maybe thats why it doesnt work anymore?) but still it doesnt excists.. ;( )
anyway i will be one of the first to buy a coldfire card from you , i am just so.... curious about how it will perform.
thanx for nice interview but not many questions was asked/answered , like...
will the ide'controller be DMA ? , will it be pio4 classified ?
what memspeed do you expect from this card?
will there be any luxury status following with this card ? :D hehe

How fast is the top end Coldfire CPU's anyway? I've seen reference to around 200/400 mhz, is there faster ones and will they be usable on this project?
Also would heat them become a problem on non towered Amiga's with a much faster CPU if they exist.

Nope, you didnt see the funny bit, my stand got a bit quiet so I started spinning the card ( one corner of the card on the table, the other on the tip of my finger) and then there was this massive noise, I dropped the prototype, face down on to the table... hehe opps.
I actually wanted let people pick the card up and have a look, its nice to touch. ;-)

To be honest I havent done much on the IDE side of the design, so far I have just been reading all the docs I could find on the net however it will be as fast as it can be and have DMA (Which from what I have read shouldnt be much trouble)

I dont know, I will have a look, see what the Motorola board will do and get back to you.

hehe, who knows, I did think it would be fun to put the music bit out of a birthday card which would make a tahh dahh sound when you opened the box, just to make it a bit more classy, but then I figured that classy people could do the sound and a piece of paper with it on would be cheaper.

Unfortunatly Im not that up on muti processor boards but there are Coldfire boards around with two CPU's. (One using a V4)
Saying that I dont intend to try making such a card, sorry.

Hehe, thats about all that has changed, from red to blue, I intend to add more pages latter.

220Mhz V4, Its the fastest you can get at the moment but Motorola say products using the new V5 at 333Mhz will be available by the end of the year.. the big question is when will the chips be available to people like me. :-)

No, the Motorola Coldfire is designed to run very cool, without a heatsink or fan, heat will not be a problem at all.

Cool, are you paying? If so I will book the ferry right now.
It wasnt a bad pint though, you could never get drunk on it, thats good. (just think how many you would need, I mean that one guy got about 2/3rds troth on his.)
When you come to the UK I will have to buy you a yard of ale, then you will find out why we still use feet and yards. ;-)

Moto's press release on the V5 chip has some pretty interesting info:

a) Expect to see twice the performance of the V4
b) Has an optional FPU! :)
Does anyone know how compatible the V5 FPU is with the 680x0 FPUs?
Moto's release is dated October last year so they must be getting close to a real product by now......

Sorry for being so pathetic, still dreaming of an AGA update ;) No one asks you to attach BVision to Coldfusion, but could you integrate just basic 3D enhancements onto the accelerator itself? Check this (http://www.acceleon.com/html/products.html) out!

Sign me up for at least 1 A4000 board and if the feature list is as extensive as the article indicates, at least 3 A2000 boards. Now no more interviews or trips when there is work to be done!

This looks like an exciting project Oliver. Some good points raised above are the price and the fact that no heatsink or fan will be needed! I think il sign up for an A4000, an A2000 and an A1200 board please! :-D
