Post by: Kees on September 04, 2003, 11:48:05 AM
Merlancia Industries is taking advanced reservations for their new Amiga MCC 1000 or 1200 computers. There is no mention about payment in this press-release.

Read the press-release (http://www.merlancia.com/newsandpr/MIND04092003.html) ...

Your email must come from a legitimate ISP address, not from a "throwaway" address such as Hotmail.com or Yahoo.com.

What BS..

I know a lot of people who have those as a main address :roll:

Suggests to me it could be after September by the time they are released.

IMO I don't know why any Amigan would want one of these instead of a Peg or A1.  I can only think that they will sell them to people who don't mind paying extra for a nice case.

I woke up in the bizzaro world.

I guess it's wait and see since RC is being tight lipped abou the OS. I think it's pretty obvious it won't ship with AmigaOS or any of it's variants/clones though. I guess AI screwed the pooch when they licensed/sold the MMC. This will be labeled Amiga and probably run Windows and Linux. :lol:

-Edit-
RC: I got all the roms I need from another dealer. You snooze, you.....

I don“t see them implementing a native Amiga alike operating system on a pc alike system. The MCC1000 has a:

 "AMD Athlon XP Processor at 2Ghz or higher"

But further in their release they say:

"The MCC is ready to use right out of the box with a variety of specialized platforms available including a general use desktop, a multimedia/video composing station, and advanced servers"

So what does this mean?
Do they pre-install a few OS's for the users to play with, or they just install Win XP with UAE on it? :-D

I want a case like that :-) The interiors are still foggy, so I don't think I'd afford a cow for a pint of milk.

I think RC would be well advised to sell an empty standard ATX case version of the mmc. There may be a market for that, it is unique IMO.

I agree. I'd like one of them for my A1 or Pegasos.

Well, maybe this is the Pegasos II :) wich Genesi makes? :) So, maybe its MorphOS with these new Amigas. Other thing, is that RC told AmigaWorld that they itend to make "new" Amiga keyboards.

Well, hehe.. Maybe this will be Pegasos II with AmigaOS4 support? :)

We will see, hehe :)

@Wilse

I've said the same thing before.  RC should make the peggy/A1 dealers work for him, rather than compete against them.  Get the MCC popular, he makes money on their OPE.

That only would be true if those dealers would trust the good, ahh, Doctor and his mother.  Would you trust a "man" who is suing himself to get insurance money out of an insurance company? :roflmao:

What BS..

Not only is it not BS, it's a perfectly reasonable request.

Anyone can open dozens or hundreds of Hotmail and Yahoo addresses and then barrage an email address as per the Press Release with bogus requests from different names which can't be verified. Would you like to sit there sending out acknolwedgements to hundreds of phony requests from faked names coming from throwaway addresses?

I didn't think so..

Anyone who uses those throwaway addresses has a real ISP address they can use.

eBay has restrictions against registering using throwaway addresses..

From their help system::

Quote::

"If you register with an 'anonymous' email address, such as Yahoo or Hotmail, you'll need to place a valid credit card number on file to verify your identity. Your card will not be charged."

End of quote.

Go verify that quote yourself if you want to. Just punch "Hotmail" into eBay's help system.

Why do they do this? Do I even have to explain it to you? Probably. Because a seller can have a legitimate account, then shill his own auctions using a throwaway address or ten..

In  the Merlancia Press Release, you're not being asked for a credit card. You're not being asked for your street address, any money, deposit, down payment, or anything else. Just a real name, a real email address, and a location. That's it. That's why requests from throwaway email addresses won't be accepted or acknowledged.

Got it? All clear now?

Yep, even more BS..  At least Ebay gives you the option to use a Hotmail account, your "business" just say; go away, we don't like you... FYI many people use such accounts as their primary email account. But if you don't want them to buy anything from you..

And boy is it hard to make an autoresponder to mail all those accounts and request for a confirmation...

You got that ? All clear now for you ? Go patronize somebody else..

--edit--

Anyone who uses those throwaway addresses has a real ISP address they can use.

BS again, I know at least 3 persons who don't have a "real" ISP address. But I guess the term "Internet cafe" or  "shared internet" access are unkown to you ?
Title: Re: Merlancia Now Accepting Reservation Requests for the Ami
Post by: DethKnight on September 04, 2003, 10:05:22 PM
I am one of those ppl who refuses to use and have never logged into my *own* ISP-provided e-mail account.
Their terms and limits for it are/were far far too restrictive for what I considered my "normal use"

As a result, I only use Hotmail,Netscape and Linuxmail
So, I guess I'll continue waiting things out.

damn Virginia Tech anyway, now I have to burn another month considering the 2xG5 or the Peg2.

@Seer

Ya know, I don't see the issue here.  Frankly, it would be easy for anyone to make spam accounts, to drive them nuts later on or to get their jollys.  Maybe Merlancia's turned itself around, maybe not.  We'll see what happens in the next few weeks.  If machines start shipping, or even better, they put the cases up for sale, then we all will have some crow to eat.

@Downix:

That's true - no need to break out the torches and pitchforks just yet people.  I must admit that I've never been burned by Merlancia, so I'm more willing to give them a chance, but I say we just wait a couple months.  If it's the usual BS, then nothing lost.  On the other hand, it's possible there's a new Amiga reseller (with something better than a bare motherboard or a generic PC case), that would be a good thing.  Mind you, if they're just selling Amiga-branded Windows boxes I will be the first in line to storm the castle...

I'm really surprised at you all.  You won't have any 'crow' to eat if they simply ship a case.

Anyone can sell an Athlon XP system, heck I can offer one....

as a matter of fact, anyone want to spend 999 dollars on a 2ghz+ Athlon system, e-mail me.
I'll sell you one.

I'm serious, they cost about $499 at wal-mart, I'll take your money.

This is not proof of anything, RC is perfectly capable of selling a case, but running an honest business is another thing, and no one will have crow to eat!

Fry's Electroics (outpost.com) has a 2 gig athlon MB for around $69 or is it $99?

As far as Merlacia goes here are a few links to check their financial status -

http://www.superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/docket/civil/caseSearchResults.asp?lastName=czerwinski&FirstName=&bName=&x=49&y=9

Christina (Ryan's mommy) has approx $55K in judgements on credit cards.

Since Ryan has used these credit cards in the course of his fantasies as a "businessman" he is jointly liable for the charges on the cards.

They include -

Amex Blue Card - Approx 18K

Discover Platinum Card - approx 22K

Capital One Card  - approx $6,900 on one

and approx $1200 on another.

If you are blowing off your personal credit you will have no problems blowig off customers (as has been the standard for MANY years).

It should also be noted that

http://www.superiorcourt.maricopa.gov/docket/civil/caseInfo.asp?caseNumber=CV2003-07483

that Ryan is suing himself and that his attorney is one of the premier bankruptcy attornies (and has in fact served on State Bankruptcy boards and is highly regarded as a BK specialist.)

Of course any one with a ounce of sense should know when a company takes your money then goes bankrupt you have lost your money with almost no chance of recovering it.

So believe the Merlancia hype send em your money and wait for your Merlancia MCC series of computers.

God - I can't believe people are so stupid to still give cred to this 20 year old con artist and his mommy.

Ya know, I don't see the issue here. Frankly, it would be easy for anyone to make spam accounts, to drive them nuts later on or to get their jollys.

Well, I can make several sub accounts with relative easy with my current ISP to do that to... The issue is not the "stuff they used to do or didn't do" but we want a "real" email account so we won't get spammed or bogus orders... Sorry, but it's so easy to set up an auto responder to deal with spam/bogus mail... (Send a auto reply to all received messages with a different "reply to" so you don't even have to look at the "order" email account..)

Besides, how is this "don't use a hotmail account" gonna help them against spam ? Most spam mail I get don't come from hotmail accounts anyway, and if they filter out hotmail accounts, then they went to almost as much trouble as setting up the repsonder.. (A simple "rule" in outlook is enough, I believe YAM is just as good at that)

And if Mr Laser didn't end with "got that? All clear now" I probably wouldn't have responded to his reply this way anyway.. (Seems Rich isn't so off as I thought)
