Title: Amiga Inc. rep answers questions at Amiwest
Post by: JamesR on July 28, 2003, 06:31:20 PM
Here (http://polarboing.com/sections.php?op=viewarticle&artid=24) are some answers to questions that were supposed to be answered by Amiga Inc. CEO Bill McEwen, who was unable to attend (http://www.amiga.com/corporate/071903-mcewen.shtml) the show. No new information is given.

No new information is given.

How to post a news item, part #1:

If there's no "new information" contained, don't post it.

If you post it, let the reader decide for himself if it's newsworthy/interesting.

There might be no new information contained in the interview that this news story points to, but the fact that the interview exists is new information - news about news (metanews?).  I'm just confusing myself now :-D

How to be sarcastic lesson #1:

The fact that Amiga's representatives are wallowing in spouting the same non-information constantly IS news. The fact that after all the hype of Amiwest absolutely NOTHING useful came out of it is, in fact, news.

That's your personal opinion. Your personal opinion does not belong into a news item (unless it's clearly marked as a rant).

Your job as a news moderator is to deliver facts, not opinion made up as facts.

I think: cgutjahr is right and educated adult people don't need to discuss this. Even not if they are frustrated.

ciao...

And in other news, some guy from that company that used to be Thendic-France and B-plan also talked about some stuff at Amiwest.  There is an mp3 transcript online.   Also, he was seen with some chick in red.

A professional newscaster does not show strong emotions when reporting on something even if the topic angers him personally. We would not expect it either.

Whilst this no where near that scenario , you should understand that it is a little annoying when a "news" item comes packaged with a personal opinion or a rant.

What would be more acceptable would be to publish the news item in a neutral manner and the vent off any personal peeves under the comments section.

Wayne was very diplomatic about these things. Can you believe it? We are missing him already.

Hi everyone!

I couldn't attend Amiwest, sorry I missed it.
As far as Amiga Inc. goes. Whatever.
After listening to Alan Redhouse, and
Ben Hermans (Hope I got that right!),
I was actually excited about our
future.  I think these gentleman are
going to deliver and take us to the
next step in our evolution, not
Amiga International.

there seems to be one direct question thats always being left out....   ....WHAT COMPANIES ARE DEVELOPING PRODUCTIVITY SOFTWARE FOR THIS DAMNED THING?!?!?!

sorry, but I stand firm on the notion that in order to get people to buy this god forsaken basterd of a machine with no OS YET!, you have to have somthing to make people want to buy it, and they are not going to do that just for a pretty OS and a few bull crap games, hell, they can get that from any system with out having to put up Amiga Inc.'s problems and hyperion delays.

Does someone want to tell me WHERE I was "ranting" in the post? It was actually quite matter-of-fact. I didn't say "Predictably, no new information was given" nor did I say "Typically, no new ... " or whatever, I stated a fact. The Q & A did not in fact give any new news whatsoever.

That's not a fact, that's your personal opinion. Note that I don't neccessarily disagree with your point of view regarding his matter, but here are some things that might be considered "news" by some of you readers:

AmigaOS4.1 will feature a state of the art set of support services for third parties to use when developing their browser clients. A default browser will ship and, whilst it will make full use of these services, the client function set will be basic. We have no intention of pushing our browser companies out of business.

I realise that my original comment was way to aggressive/arrogant, and I'm sorry about that. But my point still stands.

cgutjahr,

It sure does, that last bit was news to me. I know Fleecy mentioned a bit about the browser in one question (you know, the bi-weekly QA on amigaworld that's not considered news either by one ex-moderator), but this services stuff is definately news. In fact, it's more useful than just a browser would be.

Lets just say, if this was about BB or Gensi they where talking about, he wouldn't have dared to put "No new information is given.", though in fact, except for lots of name-dropping on BB's part, it was probably true.  :)
