Title: Kickflash OS4 - Final product specifications
Post by: Kees on June 18, 2003, 10:03:24 AM
"Due to the high demand, Kickflash OS4, which has been announced on June 2nd, has been revised. The base version now has 1MB of flash memory, and can be expanded to 1GB on an expansion port. Transfer rates can be compared to normal harddrives, but the common access times of mechanical mass-storage media practically don't exist on flash memory: On random access, so-called solid-state memory is about tenthousand times faster than common harddrives."

Check it out here (http://ami.ga/news/news80_e.htm) ...

I noticed it said that transfer rates 'can be compared' to hard drives.

WOW, will someone do a comparison, since we have permission, and post just how much slower it is....so we can get an idea about the deceleration features of this product.

Just kidding, but c'mon...compared?  They don't know what the speed is??????? They made this product?

I'd think they'd be all over those specs....posting just how good it is....

sorry for being frustrated, but THIS is exactly the type of thing we run into all the time in this community....some spec's are in order.

Allright, you produce an intelligent press release in German (Jens's native language), we'll see how smart *you* sound.

Since this is basically a souped-up non-volatile RAM drive, the transfer speeds are going to depend a lot on the speed of the computer that it's plugged into.  I'd much rather see Jens concentrate on making cool hardware than on running benchmarks (which are generally taken to be meaningless unless done by an impartial 3rd party anyway).  If it bugs you so much, ask one of the Amiga online mags to run a review, they're always looking for good article ideas.

MarkTime:
For a start, it's a press release, it's SUPPOSED to hype the product.  That's what press releases are for.
Secondly, they never said they don't know how fast it is, and are perfectly accurate in stating "about tenthousand times faster" than a harddrive.. it's solid state memory... hence DAMN FAST.  Doing an actual comparison to find out that it's "9954.34 times faster on MY system" would be a little pointless wouldn't it?  Whats your problem?
