The new Power Mac G5s, apart from shipping in an insanely great looking case, will have a motherboard featuring DDR 400 RAM, 8x AGP, FireWire 800 (FireWire 2), and USB 2.0. The G5 is Apple's marketing term for the IBM PPC970. And Hypertransport based too? The PowerMac G5 will be very expensive.
So how will systems such as Pegasos-II and AmigaOne compete?
-
Pictures man :-) !.
Seriously, I don think the Apple G5 is a threat considering the extremely high prices which Apple charge for their top of the line macs. ($4000 + here in Aus :-o )
Oh well, hopefully both the Amiga and Pegasos make the transition to the 64bit world sometime in late 2004 :-) .

@Argo
Thanks argo :-) . Not to sure if I like the G5 Sphere, it looks more at home on a dining room table.

that sphere looks so stupid I cant even laugh at it... I just feel sad for the mind that wants a computer shaped like a walnut sitting on what looks like a pot holder on their desk...

LOL - nice one - made me chuckle on a Sunday morning!
-
Considering its price, the G5 is a complete joke. It's certainly no threat for noone.
-
Apple have a history of inovation, admittedly the square case didn't work, but I hope this one does. If sales of the G5 don't take off there will be no chance of an Amiga based on the same processor.
Why would you question the state of some one's mind just because they like a round case? Now that is worrying. :-?

The G5 Sphere
Sphere, ha ha ha thats funny!
First the cube and now the sphere, Steve Jobs is borg!!!!
Restistance is futile you will be assimiliated, you will pay for overpriced computers in silly cases!
Watch out!!

Coffee table, Bodie, coffee table.
We had expensive books full of pretty pictures to show off by leaving them on the coffee table, now we've got computers that have the same function.
Well, at least it's a change from the PC boxes. I rather like it, despite the certainty of its limited expandability, but I don't need to see the price to know I can't afford it. :-(

WOW! Powerfull!

IBM PPC970 refered to as G5
I thought the PPC970 lowest speed was 1.8. I thought it went to 2.4!!!!

Apple now make footballs :-D :-D :-D
the the outside is now as crap as the insides. :-?

"insanely great"? How about "Greatly insane"! that thing looks so stupid its incredible! It looks like a space ship from Dr. Who!
-
Are you guys sure that the sphere is not some kind of spoof??
I noticed that the picture of the article was a link, so I thought I might get to read some more about it, the link was broken though, and I could see that the address it linked to, contained the word "spoof".
So, erhm... but if this is not a fake, I'm getting three, so I can practice my juggling skills. :-P

Erm, the sphere is a spoof. (and is clearly marked as one)
Spoofing Mac products is a popular thing in the Mac world.

@ Kronos
Is everything substandard to you? You don't ever seem pleased with anything...

Nope, the lowest announced speed was 1.2Ghz, actually. Of course at that speed it will beat a 1.4Ghz G4 handily, and equal up to 2+Ghz Pentium4/Athlons.

you all are knocking apple for a sphereical design that someone not associated with apple came up with for fun. and better yet, some japanese IBM-compatible company ACTULLY made a sphereical computuer. (lost link) and its bright GREEN!
-
c'mon...a rumour item from november 2001, about a product to be released by Motorola on December of 2001...
what does this have to do with reality again?
The G5's, if they are even called G5's, will be produced by IBM, not Motorola, and they will
not be released in 2001...good gaawwd

Come on people, Apple are not about to release a Sphere!!
Apart from the failure of the Cube and the obvious fakeness/spoofness of this picture (not to mention that fact it's been knocking around for years) - Apple hardware designs just don't get leaked. Screenshots sometimes do, and Apple makes them disappear very quickly.
The 970 is looking more and more likely as the next high-end Mac chip, though. I would be surprised to see a hardware announcement at this year's WWDC, however. As Jobs has said before, Apple have never launched hardware at WWDC...
It's difficult to see how they'd announce IBM 970 support without following it up with a hardware announcement pretty quickly, mind. Nobody would buy a PowerMac in the interim.
Personally, I'm not buying a new Mac until Motorola is out and a decent fast chip is in. They couldn't keep the 680x0 going, they couldn't keep the PowerPC competitive, they just about killed Psion, and owning one of their phones was a very nasty experience...

> So how will systems such as Pegasos-II and AmigaOne compete
Similar lessons as any Alpha vs X86 battle royal i.e. compete on price.
