The first new screenshots of AmigaOS4 are available.
Check them out at the AmigaOS Website. (http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4GUIPre.php)
Amigaworld.net seems to have crashed due to all the traffic.
-
Lovely Jubberly !!
Quick news post NoMaaM.
:-D
-
Oh wow! That is gorgeous! IMHO, that is a fantastic look, and is WAY better than the default OS X or WinXP theme, IMHO!
(and no, thats not just butt-kissing, thats my genuine reaction.)
I'm so relieved that the default look is still very Amiga, yet.. just... NICE!
-
I like it :-) but I`d prefer the colours and buttons of this mock up (http://amiga.org/gallery/photos/68.jpg).
I`m glad that our gadgets close, resize and depth are still the Amiga style ;-) (I like how they look in the active win)
Is it possible that we will see rounded glowing windows (http://amiga.org/gallery/photos/68.jpg) someday on our beloved OS?
I can`t wait to see more pictures :-D More input please :P feed us!!
(doh there are more than one :P I didn`t notice it at once. The screen bar should be by def white, we know that it can change but white is more beautiful, and we shouldn`t have the same colour dominate everywhere, you should put and some light grey)
-
I have to admit it's better. It means a serious advancement to the original Amiga GUI system.
It's more modern than the original, yet it's still at a large distance from today. Feel free to disagree though.
There are parts that I love (buttons) but the overall impression is disturbing IMO. It still suggests me that there was no graphic artist present in the initial design phase, and that his hand now is tied...
Just an opinion though. In fact, if they can improve the GUI for 4.1 then it's fairly acceptable as a temporary one.
-
I like it
A bit gray, but ...
I like it :-)
-
I love it, pity it's a grey theme, but it's better than Windows blue or XP's silver :-D
-
Sure looks nice indeed ...
I wonder how long before they release it ...
-
t still suggests me that there was no graphic artist present in the initial design phase
Actually, there was.
It's rather obvious that some people will not like it. I'm afraid that GUI's is something that you can start a Jihad with. There are actually people that like MacOS' Aqua or XP's Luna...
-
What about blue gradient I looked at in Slovenia
this Saturday!
http://www.inet.hr/~dponos/camerapic/trip31.jpg
-
pity it's a grey theme,
As always, you can change the colors :-)
Actually, the gradient stuff is really flexible. While you can specify RGB values for start and end, you can also define Pen numbers, which means that if you e.g. change pen 3 (the light blue) to something else, the whole gradient will adjust. That makes it easier to change appearance quickly.
Also, what is not shown in the shots is that you can impose the gradients onto a texture, that is you could have a gradient covering the metal texture like the one in the background.
-
Should anyone be interested I also have them on my site (with permission!) in a slightly easier way to view
Website (http://onlyamiga.kicks-ass.net/xgi-bin/slideshow.xgi?dir=os4)
-
Glad they finally got rid of those horrible colour schemes and skins.
But sorry guys, I have to say this - the GUI layout still sucks, new skin or not.
-

Now that sounds good.
-
Bastards! They killed KennyR :-D :-):-D
I worked on both A4000 with CSPPC and OS4,
and it looked good!
There are allways unsatisfied people, and that
is normal!
-
But sorry guys, I have to say this - the GUI layout still sucks, new skin or not.
Well... you're obviously in the minority. Most people seem to really like it, so I think it seems to have achieved its goal of "pleasing most of the people, most of the time" :-D
-
Hi Kenny,
It is always going to come down to personal opinion in the end.
I've got to say I like the new look, especially with the font Anti-Aliasing :-)
-
>Most people seem to really like it
I think the real world test will be in this thread (http://www.osnews.com/comment.php?news_id=3732). ;-)
-
Yeah, but OS4.0 isn't for the REAL world... that would be, what... 4.2, 5.0? ;-)
-
I am one of the few here who like the Windows 9x appearance then. :) Although AmigaOS is a far superior OS I find Workbench a bit cramped... this new design doesn't look any more spacious. Also very simple things in Windows, such as a grey border around title bars, makes a big difference in clarity...
-
To me Shot 4 (http://www.stormloader.com/amiga/osnews/amiga4.htm) looks the best imho.
Still 3.9 icons??? They're fine but...
I agree that the gadgets look good still being Amiga-ery.
Well done HP, I am far from disappointed.
-
Some screenshots with a much better image quality have been uploaded!
The new images have a 1024x786 resolution in PNG format.
Have fun. :-D
-
I would prefer the input boxes this way:
-
Also, what is not shown in the shots is that you can impose the gradients onto a texture, that is you could have a gradient covering the metal texture like the one in the background.
that sounds like what you can do in linux. very cool!
I love "Kickstart version 50.1"
-
;-) I like the anti-aliased fonts. I notice also that MUI has a setting for menus, now. The window gadgets are a little 2-D for my taste, but other than that, it looks a lot like my own highly customized Workbench® screen.
-
Can I be honest, speaking as a private skeptic?
I don't see anything here I did not see with OS 3.9.
But, honestly, I didn't expect to either.
Is this bad? Not at all.
It appears to be running, and that's a step in the right direction.
-
I'd love to see it, but it looks like AW is choking on a hairball. Can't find module errors on everything.
-
Man, I can't wait to get OS 4!!
:-)
-
Enough already with the brush metal look. I want pink marble dagnabit!! :-D
-
The text looks great but let down by the roughness of the gadgets and other GUI objects.
Even after a decade the grey still looks drab and the blue weak.
Hyperion know that 99.9% of all sales will come from the present Amiga community and try to reasure it. But they are reassuring by suggesting nothing has changed since OS3.9.
IMHO this should have been kept as a 'OS3.9 look' skin to be used for existing software.
To me and it seems others the true face of the Amiga is the boing ball and the colours of the original Amiga.
Above all I think the community needs to know that the Amiga OS is vibrant, exciting and colourful once more.

Like the W95 look? Man, that's crazy. I thought the Win3.1 look was better. The start menu is not very intuitive. It takes too many clicks to activate a program in the Windows start menu. I think the MacOS X version of the task bar is much better than Windows: it shows all the quick launchable apps and indicates which ones are currently opened. The only good thing about Win98/2K/XP is the quick launch part, but it's too limited. OS/2 Warp's launcher was better than Windows', too.
OS4 has A LOT more features than 3.9.
Looks really good to me. Slick and intuitive.
-
No, Dude....
Blue and Orange 1.3 Retro Theme
-
Just IMO, but too many people are frittering over the choice of colors and rounded-versus-square window borders and whatnot.
Get the damned OS up, running, and stable on the manyvaried PPC platforms first. Hell's Bells, if it looks like 1.3 but runs stably, then so be it.
Remember, it's about the applications.
-
It looks like the load has crashed the AmigaWorld.net database, but HMetal has mirrored them here (http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4GUIPre.php).
The screenshots are geat IMO - it still looks like an Amiga, but they've added all the nice features like gradients. Cannot wait to see more :-D
-
Difficult to judge because:
- not a lot of screens to judge on (where are menus,...)
- it is only 80% finished
- there are 4 screens and they are all different, so which is the one i will get when i install OS4?
Good things:
- the fonts
Negative points:
- still looks old and dated (looks like a 3.9)
- i don't see any work of a graphics artist here, none. The textured window border and the grey pattern look ugly (mysterious graphic artist: i hope you will not include this in the final look)
- it looks cluttered, depressive, dull
- the glowicons don't really cut it anymore (i had hoped that Mason would do some magic with icons somewhere in OS4)
For me, really dissapointing. I hope a lot changes in the last 20%. (btw see Simoami's stuff on what can be done to make a modern look)
-
Hi Hans-Joerg
Great work! what hardware were the screenshots running on? CSPPC?
It doesn't seem like anyone noticed (in the amiga2.htm screenshot) that the voodoo 1024x768x16 screenmode is draggable. Is that because voodoo hardware allows for draggable screens, or have you guys figured out how to do dragging on any gfx card?
-
Apart from the brushed steel used as window background (shamelessly riped from Aqua), it looks most definitely promising. At least it shows the improving potential of the GUI versatility. And those antialiased fonts are (at long last!) utterly gorgeous. Does that mean standard support for Freetype/Unicode? We can only hope so...
-
Amigaworld.net is now up again.
-
WOW! VERY COOOOOOOOL!
I like it very much!!!!
-
@z5
- the glowicons don't really cut it anymore (i had hoped that Mason would do some magic with icons somewhere in OS4)
As you stated: These are just 80%! ;-)
But please don't expect too much wizardry - the style in OS4 will still be "GlowIcons".
I can't see much of my work in the screenshot.
More to come :-D
In my Opinion it is essential to builed a cooperate design concept for the hole system first. Which will carefully be expanded...
But you also maybe know, that programers are a special species - you have to fight for every coloured pixel ;-)
Kind Regards,
Martin "Mason" Merz

Have to agree with Martin, and I think his icons are great anyway - the GlowIcons look on AmigaOS is definately nicer than the average Windows look - why change the look? :-D
-
Looks really nice - especially the anti-aliasing :-D
-
I like 8-) Very nice. There are a few things I will be changing on my config (the window gadgets need to be 3D look, and the screen titlebar needs to be a different colour - I liked the wood effect on some of the older screenshots), but for the default it's fine. I rather like GlowIcons as well, so am quite happy these haven't been changed much.
A couple of points:
1. Where are the menus? I guess to keep fairly consistent with OS3.9 they are pull-down from the titlebar as default, but colours etc - it would be nice to see a screenshot of these.
2. Why do we still not have a scroll bar in the Shell?

You might not have noticed it, but it's running on PPC. Look at the version info visible in some of the shots. Exec version 50.1... That's the PPC native exec.

...running on one PPC card type in a couple of carefully selected machines.
So I repeat:
Get it up and working on the manyvaried PPC platforms. I.e., all of those super-expensive A1 boards, bVision cards, etc. etc.

Given the fact how many "experts" bitched about the impossibility of us doing this at all, I am quite content with it. The other things come next.
And please, no "it will not work, you will not make it".
We will :-)
-
This looks GOOD. If it's only a bit more stable and fast as OS3.x on my 060 then I'd really consider an A1 G3....
-
For people that are always complaining about
AOS4.0 look:
OS4.0 it's not for you! It's for us!
I saw it live and it was good, not perfect, because there are not perfect things made by
humans!
Kickstart your engines, and let's get it on!
-
yeah, i don't understand negativity either.
isn't the whole point of AMIGA the fact that you can make it look and DO whatever you WANT????
you don't expect them to read everyone's mind and make a screenshot that looks EXACTLY like YOU would make it?
get the damn thing - when it's available - and make it look like what you want.
that's what i'm going to do. :-D

How about this as a tag line for Hyperion Entertainment,
" Miracle's we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer" :-D

" Miracle's we do at once, the impossible takes a little longer"
LOL :-D
I like that, in fact I'm going to stick it in my profile as a tagline :-)

Nice, very nice, now all i need is a bit o money to buy the thing and ill be happy again....
-
now THAT looks a LOT better :-o
-
I think that is it!!!
It looks great!!!
Now all we need is something like Window Blinds so we can skin it to death...
-
As soon as OS4 is available for the A1 I'll be buying.
But it seems I'll be trading one grey looking OS for another.
With all the great new features why does OS4 still look old and drab?
I want to buy a new Amiga and have the sensation I had when I bought my first one, before Commodore finished hacking it.
I just hope there's already a WB1.3 theme or I'll just spend some time to do it myself. Then I can finally feel yes, here is my Amiga.
-
I stopped posting here months ago and changed
to an iMac , but this is worth coming back for. :-)
This is exactly the GUI I was expecting.
Clean , simple , modern , familiar.
viva la Amiga
-
If mac users like the look, then it definitely cannot be too bad :-D
-
looks like its coming together great! I want to see some 3rd party application screenshots :)
-
Sweet!!
I like very much.
Nice one Hyperion!
Keep up the good work.
Cheers and indeed many beers, :pint:

i want more than screen shots
im not buying an OS just for the bloody GUI
-
... in that case you'll love linux. No gui to get in your face, just lots of luvverly virtual terminals in 80x25 text mode. It runs fast and it's very stable too!
-
I think it looks great! :-D
It looks like an Amiga OS and that's what I want it to look like. :-)
-
Nice work guys, very nice :-)
-
/me dreglar
:-D
-
Hi, Martin. I think you and all the graph team are making a great work.
Can I ask you (or someone other that can answer :-)) if the final icons will be antialiased ?
Thanks for your work on my favourite OS... :-D
Alessandro

@Rogue
I like the screenshots very much! :-D
Great work, guys.
