Title: A500 memory expansions
Post by: Ada on October 05, 2003, 01:42:25 PM
Hi all! ;-)

I have two A500 memory expansion boards. I've seen that they have 8 sockets for memory chips but have only 4 chips installed. I wonder if I could extract those 4 chips from one of the boards and install them into the other one. Could I obtain more memory?

Just a thing I noticed reading this forum... maybe (surely, I think) the batteries are dead... if I remove them, I will loose the clock, but will the board still be working fine without it?  :-?

Thanks in advance.

Doubt if you can solder chips onto it, maybe worth a go but i wouldnt advise it. As for the battery? AFAIK it should work without it but you will loose RTC. Hope this helps! (Someone correct me if im wrong!)

I know i have a mem expansion of 4mb in the a500+ that dosent work in the a500. My old a500 only had 512k in the trapdoor.

Thanks for your answers! :-)

My computer is an A500. The chips aren't solded directly to the board, they are inserted into chip sockets, so I could easily extract/insert them. In fact, that's not the problem. The question is if the Amiga would recognize the extra modules as extra RAM :-) or just ignore them :-(

Sorry as this may be a silly question, but what's an A500+? You mean an A500 with the newer Agnus or something else?

Thanks again.

Stock A500+ has 1mb chip onboard where A500 has 512k. And yes, the memory will work without the battery.

Check that. Thats the "basic" Difference. I prefer the a500 tho, as most people do i think. Easy way to tell is the logo on the case. A500 has CBM chicken head logo, a500+ says , well Amiga 500+!

Sounds like you have got ye olde `ZIP CHIPS' these come in different values i.e 1mb or 250kb.
easy to work out what ones you have by dividing your total ram by one or other of the above values.
you could try putting them in the other board, but i doubt that it is auto-configuring,so have a look for some onboard jumpers.
