There is an interesting post on Moobunny by Bill Buck about the MAI situation.
"The three day trip became a ten day trip. Day 3 Mai finally admits there are problems ...
We helped Mai and Mai turned around and stabed us in the back. TerraSoft too. Hence, the April announcement. We produce 200 April1 Pegasos boards."
Read it all at Moobunny (http://www.flyingmice.com/cgi-bin/squidcgi/mbmessage.pl/amiga/85760.shtml) ...

Although it's no doubt written in Genesi's favour, it's still nice to see a company actually go into detail about its dealings. If only Eyetech, Elbox, and especially AInc would do this we would be in a better state than we are now.
-
Very interesting. I agree with Kenny, up to a point.
Having said that, if every company concerned made *all* their business dealings so transparent, it might do more harm than good
-
With all the trouble, I'm wandering why Genesi didn't design their own chip, maybe modify an IBM one, and then get some cheap Chinese Fab to make them.
I'm wondering if it might not have been easier/ cheaper to use an exisiting X86 chipset and then use some glue logic to tie the PPC to it :-D
-
Transparent isn't quite the same as public. Transparency would probably harm business, but making dealings public doesn't mean full disclosure - but it doesn't mean lying in our faces either.
I think this simple narrative has made Genesi more credible in my eyes. What do other ppl think? (Apart from the fanatics that is, those can just shut the hell up).
-
This puts alot of pieces together in my head. Including what I read on the private A1 list when I used to be on it, and it used to be NDA. No I will not say what that is, I will respect the NDA. Nothing earth shattering, just lends credibility to Bill Buck.
-
@redrumloa
What?
At least post the subject header of the mail in question so that people who are on the list can look it up.
-
just lends credibility to Bill Buck.
Now ... that really makes me curious !! hehe :-)
-
Just for your information...
The pictures in this news item (http://www.morphos-news.de/index.php?lg=en&nid=137&si=1)
(the shaking hands) was actually meant for the
Genesi-MAI announcement...
-
What do other ppl think?
well, I think its clear that....
(Apart from the fanatics that is, those can just shut the hell up).
oops, nevermind. :-o

I'm don't think I even have those emails archived anymore, just look at the timeframes and check the archives if you want to do research and you have access. I'm not saying anymore on the subject:-)

@bloodline: It took Mai years to design the Articia S.
Other x86 chip manufacturers have been working since the early 90's on current northbridge solutions.
As you know it'd only take 20 minutes to find a place who'd sell you a chip, and cheaper to just buy that, than delay for 2 years on a custom controller and then have to throw it out at a hugely exploded price.
As for gluing x86 chips to a PPC: very funny, but please don't start people off thinking you were serious.. :)
As it happens the sole reason why the Pegasos is stuck with the Via 8231 for southbridge support is that all of the newer chipsets from Via and other manufacturers use HyperTransport or NetBurst to communicate with the processor/northbridge. These are very x86-biased protocols.

Sorry, I realise now that some people might have taken me seriously!!! I was trying to show how rediculess the situation wa with a bit of irony.

Ok, I'll take this as a flame against Eyetech then. As I am unable to match anything against the two timelines.

You are either not on the private NDA list, or it has been removed from the archive. I don't know or care, I am not part of it anymore. I know what I read.
BTW 1 + 1 does not equal 3. Don't imagine flames where there aren't any.

@Neko:
That avatar sure does stick out! What a Bright GREEN! I think it adds effect to the kitten jumping out.
@everyone else:
I kind of like the stories coming out from the top. They are very interesting, and when they come out they usually mean that a given business relationship is just plain over. Whatever will be, will be--I guess.
-
Same thread moved over to ANN too...
Heard it all up to the January entries from Gerald Carda at CES. Saw the Mai suits there at CES, as well. When posted on this subject around that time the replies were not always polite. But I've got patience ; }
Some of you who got boards through Phoenix on the first run had to do some waiting. Mai was the reason for that. They had the money for some time but their delivery dates were not met.
When the very tough decision was made to forgo shipping product for a number of months and to instead go with Marvell and design PegII, I sympathized. Though I understood the financial situation that entailed I could not help but feel relief that I would no longer have to hear about Mai's slipping dates, their lackluster in-house "beta testing", and the underlying accountability issues they were loath to address.
Sure, inhouse design was probably considered. But as Neko says, that does not come without penalties.
-
@redrumlo
I only said this because I could see no point to your post if you were not going to give any details.

The problem is, to Joe User like myself, that Mr. Buck's previous conduct in this and other matters remove credibilty for his statements.
Also for the cynical it can be seen as another publicity stunt by Genesi. Controversy seems to be a popular PR tool for Genesi, and this is no different. It's a shame really, as thier strongest weapon is the product itself.

Neko:
I know your avatar. It's one of a serie of phonecards,
printed by NTT, the japanese telephone company,
with cute photos of cats. I have that one. Really cute.
Neko? Hmmm.. wasn't Neko the cat-shopkeeper in that
Snes game called Secret of Mana? If so, I guess
you like both cats and Japan :)

Varthall, now going to start copying MPW from my PC
to my Mac using ~15 floppies.

of course most companies will slant things to thier view it is called spin.
HMM I wonder why Mr Buck didn't lay the truth out earlier.
like before he sold all those "buggy boards".
I say Mr Bill Buck got a sweet heart deal from marvel. So he drops Mai and immeadiatly starts bad mouthing Mai. It's his style and history bares me out on this.
So the next thing all those MorphOS guy's will be claiming the MArvell chips are faster than Nforce II chipset. More spin and the Moo bunny interview was made for a purpose to syphion off sales of a SHIPPING PRODUCT!!! namely the AONE G4.
Listen guy's if Bill Buck and team could produce a motherboard in 4 month's from scratch I will be most impressed. I also will buy one just because it would be a massive accomplishment.
Truth be told if they start shipping before December that still would be most impressive.
most MorphOS guy's will most likely receive thier Peg II boards this time next year.
Kurt
Ohh and fellas you guy's waiting for the G4 upgrades for your PEGASOS boards
I really don't think thats gonna happen.
-
@Kurt
Alright, I'll be more than happy to process your order personally in
September.
(even if that's not my job anymore, I'll still do it just for you)
-
HMM I wonder why Mr Buck didn't lay the truth out earlier.
They have (if you payed attention during the last months), but in many *separate* posts/announcements. This is a résumé.
-
Remember this is only one side of the story. Seriously, sound like a kid who is pissed about a friend who got some new firends :) not that im saying that Bbrv's comments arnt real, just that, this is business. What happens in business isnt always nice, and can sometimes seem downright bitchy.
If only we could get MAI's possition on this, then we could make a more accurate judgment on the events explained by bbrv.
I have my doubts that this is the real way it happened, because it always seems bbrv has something to say, and more often then not, its about someone who has upset him/them in the past.
Having said that, its also kinda good that he's open about what happens, but it cuts both ways. (btw - just my opinions and im aloud to have them)
-
Well...it looks to me like they persevered
through a real nightmare. The fact that
they went through so much effort to deliver a
solid product says quite a lot.

Redrumloa:
Now you're just looking childish. No emails have been deleted from the archives, and I certainly don't think this whole tirade gives any credibility to Bill Buck. Please help me find the emails you're talking about.
It's been known for ages that the AmigaOne G3-SE has a DMA bug which has been fixed in the AmigaOne XE using newer Artitica chips, and this isn't the topic of discussion. AFAIK you haven't been on the list since November, which is incidentally about the time the chip was fixed. How would you know what has been going on with the AmigaOne XE?
I admit that it's entirely possible the person who actually found the cause of the DMA bug in the ArticiaS is Gerald Carda, but I am not gonna go around whine about that. If I find a bug in a chip, I would be an idiot for thinking the competition wouldn't hear about it if I told the supplier. Gee, come on. That's business for you. Eyetech had a closer relationship with MAI than bPlan had, so there ;-) (ok, now I'm being childish :-) )
What I will not sit here and listen to people take as fact is that the AmigaOne XE must be deadly flawed because Genesi doesn't get the Pegasos to work like it should. I've got hundreds of XE owners saying it's working like a charm, who are YOU to say that they are wrong? I mean, if it's a serious bug that makes the Pegasos unsellable you would think a user would at least notice it now and then on an AmigaOne, right? I mean, one user is complaining that Mozilla tends to crash too often. Oh my god, this HAS to be a bug in the ArticiaS!!!!!!!! Of course, it crashes on my non-ppc machines as well, but that's just a coincidence. And Opera being unstable? Wow, just unstable? Heh, some days it's downright unuseable on my office computer. (I can say that, I'm no longer working for Opera ;-) ). Right now, a couple of people are coming across as really naive when it comes to business and Bill Bucks wild accusations. I mean, a guy who slings mud against end users on public boards is to be trusted at all times, no? Same goes for Ben Hermans, btw. If you can't be more polite, shut the heck up. (I can say that as well, because I'm not working for either Genesis or Hyperion. I think both of those guys could learn a lot about public relations from Alan Redhouse, who really acts like a professional in this matter).

Want to take part in the Cerberus testing of A1 vs Peg1 then?

ROTFL.

Varthall vollunteered, OT:
Neko? Hmmm.. wasn't Neko the cat-shopkeeper in that Snes game called Secret of Mana?
;-) If you didn't know, "neko" is Japanese for "cat."
-
I don't get it, what's so funny about this :-?
/me is one of them...
Ciao, Alfred
-
If you didn't know, "neko" is Japanese for "cat."
Aha, this explains everything :-)
(also the lack of inventive of Secret of Mana's coders)
