In keeping with the tradition of free advertisements for Amiga tradeshows and events, the AmiWest 2003 banner is now in rotation.
AmiWest 2003 (http://sacc.org/amiwest), being the 26th and 27th of July in Sacramento California is shaping up to be one of the best west coast shows in memory with Amiga Inc's CEO, Genesi SARL, the Amiga.org crew, and many more in attendance.
We at Amiga.org will be working hand-in-hand with the AmiWest crew and members of SACC (the organizers) to push this show really hard and make it a success. We hope that you will all plan to attend. With two months to go, airfare is still cheap!
-
Are there any shows in the UK this year? It'd be great to see AmigaOne and Pegasos demonstrated.
-
I would love to go! :-)
But that would mean me missing out on my honeymoon!... And that isn't an option. :-D :-D
Maybe next year!
Will be looking out for all the news coverage here of course.
-
Priorities man, where are your priorities?
:-P
-
It would be Kewl to have a "Alternative Platforms" show here in the Midlands.
Easy to get to coz were in the middle. Somewhere like "The Fleet" in Peterborough..(We'd never fill the NEC) would be ideal.. Has a LARGE car park.. good bus/taxi links.. Excellent chippy & chinky over the road etc..
Link.. . The fleet (http://www.appeals-service.gov.uk/finding_us/venue_details.asp?ID=101)
Food for thought.... Perhaps something worth organising in the near future

@BBRV
How about a Pegasos related demo/show in the UK?
-
I will also be in attendance.
(At SidMan's honeymoon, of course....would love to go to AmiWest too...maybe someday)
-
@MarkTime
Sorry mate, only room for two and it's already booked up. :-)
(Thats the honeymoon of course, not AmiWest!)

Are there any shows in the UK this year?
Yes there will be one in Huddersfield when OS4 is out (not sure on dates or times but it was held back when no OS4 was released)
I will go to it and is not that far to drive to.
Oldham ---> M60 ---> M62 ---> Huddersfield (30 mins drive) :-)
-
Oldham ---> M60 ---> M62 ---> Huddersfield (30 mins drive)
Same route for me too, I just get on the M65 first.
-
I will drive down but ONLY if OS4 or PEG is shown there,
There is no f*cking way i am going to drive down again like last time to see a board running linux, waste of petrol.
-
@Paul
I can't speak for OS4, but Pegasos and MorphOS will be there. That much has been confirmed by BBRV and Targhan

Nice.... I know where I'll be going then.
-
@Wayne
Are you talking about Amiwest or Huddersfield ?
-
@Paul,
I'm talking about AmiWest (which was the topic). Hudderfield doesn't currently exist to the best of my knowledge.
-
@Wayne
Who's confirmed going?
-
@Wayne
Ok thanks, i will email the HAUG (Huddersfield Amiga Users Group) guys about Huddersfield.
@mdma
Nice.... I know where I'll be going then.
No point in banging the bishop just yet till the HAUG guys confirm stuff, so put it away for now :lol:
-
@red:
That's actually a question for the AmiWest crew. To the best of my knowledge so far;
Bill McEwen
Genesi SARL, including BBRV and others
Me, Targhan, and as many others as I can gather.
-
I'm talking about AmiWest
oh, bugger! :-(
-
@Wayne
Cool, I was wonder who from the A-Org crew. No garantees yet but it looks like I will definately be going myself:-)
-
Maybe one of these years I'll actually have funds to go to one of these shows.. If they're still having them by that time. :-)
-
I have never been to an Amiga show. Amiwest 2003 will be my first. Looking forward to seeing the people behind the avatars.
DoodooHead
-
@doodoohead
Lovely nick :-o This will be my first show also:-)
-
The shows are great, but don't forget to budget your funds for
spending cash. I'm not kidding, it's very easy to over-spend
at an Amiga show. Also make sure it's a realistic number, as if you
budget too small--you'll overdo it. If you over-budget, you'll learn
the joys of shipping from a hotel!
I'm not trying to tell you to be prepared to buy any given thing, but
rather to be prepared for what you buy! Last year, I found a sweet
deal on a virtual library of RKM's--you can imagine the pain that was!
Another piece of advice: Duffel bags. For those who are making this
their first show, make sure you pack some empty duffel bags into your
luggage. This makes it easier to bring things back with you. At a
PowerPicnic several years ago, someone scored an A4000 for next to
nothing. So, don't count out someone showing up at a show just to
offload their old Amiga to a good home.
-
@redrumloa
Lovely Nick
I was watching Nickelodeon (a Children's TV network) and reading Time magazine. The article I was reading in Time said, "Only Dorks and Doodooheads watch Nickelodeon". I had to choose.
I've been Doodoohead in Half-life, Unreal, Soldier of Forune 1&2, Tribes 1&2, Quake 3, and Battlefield 1942. The folks in those games call me "Doodoo" for short.
As for Amiwest, I am bringing my digital cameras to get some pictures of whatever goes on at these things.

Hey, It could always be more about smartphones...
-
We need an East Coast show... or an Ottawa Show would be nice...
-
Hi!
We would do a Show in the UK -- no problem. If someone wants to get it organized we will fund it. Also, we are thinking about a Pegasos Show in Orlando in late September.
Sincerely,
R&B :-)
-
I for one cast a 'Yay' vote to the Orlando show in september... I'll definitly like to attend BBRV...
-
If your undecided I HIGHLY RECOMMENDED GOING! SACC puts on a FIRST RATE SHOW!!! This will be my third year in a row!
Even though it's small when compared to any 'normal' computer show it's GREAT to be in a room with more than ONE Amiga user.
I plan on taking lots of pictures, doing an interview or two for the website and hopefully buying a bunch of stuff!! I have my fingers crossed for an A1-XE with OS4. (ya right!) Come on guys!! Take my $$$$$

Thats a great offer but i doubt anyone in UK would do a show now untill OS4 comes out and i agree because there is nothing interesting in seeing Linux running on hardware.
-
Paul what about Pegasos/MorphOS people and those interested in them? surely they would attend.
-
what about Pegasos/MorphOS people and those interested in them? surely they would attend
Yes they would attend and i would aswell but the thing is most user groups over here will not do a show untill OS4 is released.
-
@Paul
It's a shame that they feel that they must tie a show into OS4. If it is financially difficult to have a full show without OS4, might I suggest a party or a picnic. Something that is regional, that could still bring several user groups together, and could possibly bring in a dealer? A full fledged show isn't necissary to have some fun with your Amiga-Friends. Even something as simple as an annual meeting of two or three user-groups can be a lot of fun.
You don't need a large venu and a huge overhead to have a really cool show. A little imagination can go a long way. I'm willing to bet that there's someone in your user's group that has access to some place that could host 30 to 100 people. :-D
Keyword == FUN!
-
@Paul_Gadd
Looking forward to bumping into you at a UK show :-)
Bring ur Mr Sheen

Incredibly Hot!

We thought you were from ALABAMA?...;-)
(...never hot there!) :-)
R&B
...and what about Paul?!
-
@bbrv & @Wayne
Yes, do it in September when it is incredibly hot, force everyone
indoors to watch the show and see the hoopla.
Also, incase any non-desired people show up, set them up outside. 8)
-
Thats a VERY generous offer BB.
C'mon Paul ...
I second you to do it !! (Holds hand up) :-D
-
@meerschaum
wholly cow, tacky green avatar alert!
now how will I quickly eyeball what messages I wrote.....
grrr btw, my avatar was sharply done before I had to reload it, and botched it the 2nd time....
not that I'm complaining mind you..... :-)
-
s'mone should pay me to do a show too, I'd call it the sMarkTime's wacky attacky tradeshow
that would be s.w.a.t. for short....and I bet you thought the s was a typo.

Ok got a decent idea. (UK users)
How about Bowlers at trafford? Bill pays for the area he will need and the place if massive, any thoughts on that?.
Bowlers Exhibition Centre, Trafford Park, Manchester.
(Just think well over 1000 people in that place every saturday).
-
Well, only if The Editor and his wife (and his kids!) agree to help. :-D
BTW, Takis is in Manchester! How come you never have met?! Plus, "Neko" would make a special appearence! :-o
Well...?
Sincerely,
R&B :-)

Orlando? I'm there! September/October would be a good time for a show in Orlando since the main flux of tourist are long gone. That means cheap hotel rooms and no crowds at the major attractions. Kissimmee for those who would be on a budget, has alot of hotel rooms that should have very reasonable rates for that time of year. Priceline.com should be considered once there are firm dates.

EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITY:
Genesi Sarl, a growing company in the alternative computer market is seeking to hire "dammy" (aka Randy Vice) to organize a Pegasos/MorphOS Show at a site and time of his choice in Orlando, Florida. All expenses will be borne by the undersigned. Emphasis must be given to the Pegasos and MorphOS, but all other interests are welcome, including the AROS, Teron/A1, AROS, OS4, AROS, Catweasel, AROS, LinuxPPC, AROS, BeOS, AROS, BSD, AROS, User Groups, etc., etc., etc. (and AROS!)

Genesi :-)

Go for it Dammy!! I'd go for an Orlando show without question! :-o
-
Takis is in Manchester
Who is Takis?
-
Bowlers is a great place for cheap hardware. If there is an Amiga show there I will go.
-
@quiesce
Imagine MorphOS and Pegasos on a big stall in Bowlers (at the computer fair not on their own) and then look at the average number of people what go there,
Genesis and their baby would be openly shown to hundreds (i would estimate 1000+) people who go there, if that aint exposure then nothing is :-P
I go there most Saturdays and it is jam packed with people, Eyetech, Hyperion should go aswell if they want a army of people looking at their products.
Getting people to look at the products is a good start, even if those people have no interest in the Amiga or Pegasos, it will turn heads and get new people to the platform instead of messing about with single sided shows just for a minority of people.
Me: Hi Joe Average want to come to an Amiga show?
Joe: You taking the piss? those machines are antiques
Me: How about we go to Bowlers and see this new Pegasos machine which is the latest hot new hardware
Joe: Sounds interesting lets drive down.
Me: Yep, i wonder what it does?
Joe: I have no idea but lets have a look
Genesis stand 10 mins later
Joe: WOW that is one wicked machine i will buy one
Me: I told you this is the best place to come
Joe: Yeah and you wanted me to first go to an Amiga show
Me: Enjoy your product.
Joe: Will do
The End
-
MarkTime:
Just what is your avatar? Looks like a bear tossing something to a child.
-
MarkTime:
Just what is your avatar? Looks like a bear tossing something to a child.
Wrong: It's a child throwing a very tasty afternoon snack to a bear.
-
Thus spake Wayne:

Bill McEwen
Genesi SARL, including BBRV and others
Me, Targhan, and as many others as I can gather.
Actually, the official Amiga Inc. press release said:
"Bill McEwen, president and CEO of Amiga Inc.," so maybe they'll both show up!
:-P
-
@Paul_Gadd: You're too optimistic. ;-)
-
Come on Randy! Do it! Damien and I can give ya a hand.
Hey guys, idea for the AmiWest show, let's give a real-life Roast of
some Amiga celebrity. Any volunteers?
-
That would be a large undertaking to do a show, depending on it's size. Tell you what, give me an email and let me know what your looking for and then I'll do some sniffy around to find out what is available during whatever frame of time you want and what general location your looking for.
BTW, is Kruse still in the ORL area?
Dammy
-
You're too optimistic
Yeah but i can see how Amiga shows are failures and will continue to be failures when they are only aimed at certain people (the 1990s have long gone).
Those guys should stop messing about and get their Amiga and Pegasos hardware in places where average Joe goes to,
How many normal everyday people do you know what would go to an Amiga show? not many (maybe even none) but if however the hardware comes to them it may make them take a look and even buy the hardware.
Bringing hardware to the normal people is the way to go.
-
I think Paul has a very valid point there - Joe Public wouldn`t dream of attending an Amiga-only show - they would have no need.
By attending a multi-format show, (remember Amiga at the FES shows?) your putting your products "in-the-mix," not necessarily head to head, but as an alternate product offering showing visitors and users that there ARE alternatives - remember, most computer users these days probably think the only type of alternative "computer" out there is a Mac - alright, they can run linux but they can do that on their existing hardware!
Bring the product to them, not them to the product.
@BBRV
the cost implications for this are less for you too, since you need only put up a stand rather than hire an entire venue!
Its worth considering as an overall marketing strategy, maybe in combination with Amiga/Pegasos specific shows.
My personal inclination is that for the aformentioned shows, Amiga Inc and Genesi should find some of common ground and pool resources together for Amiga/Pegasos specific shows where users of both systems can share ideas, constructive debate etc etc
Hang on a minute, I must`ve lost the plot :-)
Ignore the last bit, I`d like that to happen but I don`t think its going to - heres to optimism!
-
@Rudei
Exactly,
While i have nothing against Amiga shows (been to loads in the past) i think they should ditch the minority approach and spread their wings.
Amiga / Pegasos needs to be exposed to crowds what have no interest or do not even know they exist.
"So the world may know" know what? (exactly).
-
Then you cannot do that at a show organised specifically for the purpose of showing off Pegasos kit or Amiga kit. This would have to happen at a more unversal appeal event.
Publicity cannot be beaten on one drum, if the products aren't there to sell in the volumes required and the reviews aren't out there and are positive enough to justify it you might as well stay under the radar and get people in on word of mouth else you will fall on your arse.
Where did YOU first hear about a new computer? At a trade show? At a show organised for that computer? As a feature in a magazine? On TV? On "Digitiser"? Word of mouth?
Be realistic. The only people attending will be a self selecting group of people - those that are interested in the product in the first place.
Not saying don't do it, just be realistic with your expectations.
