Over on the AmigaOne mailing list comes news that the XE models are now shipping:
...we are currently (from Wednesday last) shipping the A1-XE in volume, first to the dealers, then to the developers who ordered the SE way back but decided to change to the XE ... We expect to get the backlog cleared by the end of the month...
See Yahoo list (http://groups.yahoo.com/group/amigaone/message/26303)
Alen also makes a good argument about using AmigaOnes in place of Intel/AMD-based servers.
-
YES!!!
Now all we need is AmigaOS4 ... hint hint hint (-> Hyperion) :-D

Yeeeeeey!
All we need is OS4, and I
also need money for A1XE :-D
OS4 save us from dark ages!!!
-
:-D
-
Pardon my drooling.
I can't wait to get OS on the go with this!
-
Cool! 8-) Who knows, mine might still arrive in time for my birthday.

the power argument is meaningless... 1 P4 at 3ghz can do the work of at least 4 G3's@600mhz... so one P4 would be more economical... and also cheaper by far...

"what else do you think I'm doing in the office this sunny bank holiday Friday!"
Acting professional and updating your website to let potential customers know what is going on? yeah sure if that is going to happen anytime soon.

ROTFL. The guy that's missed the point by several parsecs!
Firstly, the A1 is not being shipped with G3@600, but g3@800 and g4@800.
It is not true that 1*P4@3G = 4*G3@600. If your sole benchmark is MHz, then you know nothing about computers. This argument has been shot down so often here and elsewhere I'm not going to bother expanding.
It is rare that a server requires raw processing power. It is not used for the same things as a desktop computer, and certainly doesn't have the same number of concurrent users. 2 G3@600 are better than 1 P4@3000 when talking about servers: you're spreading the load. Of course, that's assuming you can get a P4 + cooling system into a 1U case.
A server farm (a small one would have "only" 600 mobos in racks) does not just require electricity to function, it also requires electricity for air-conditioning: you can cook an egg on a P4, whereas the G3/G4 runs much, much cooler.
Air conditioning eats up power (and the hotter the air, the more power required). It also circulates dust - which a Pentium, requiring more ventilation, also stirs up much more of - and this is not good for the humans (remember them?) who actually operate and maintain the servers.
Interestingly, on French radio this morning there was a discussion of how using more efficient electric appliances (they mentioned TVs and dishwashers) could save up to 30% of electricity consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emission by an impressive amount.
Lastly, the price difference between a x86 mobo and the XE would be recouped in direct electricity savings (the board alone) in about a year, if Alan's calculations are correct.

Acting Professional & looking Professional are too different things.
And having done business with eyetech in the past i say thay are Professional enough.
I think MicroSofts web site looks like a joke with its FisherPrice look. But you dont see me going on & on about it.
I see many amateur web sites that look much more Professional than alot of big corporate websites.
There are some very Professional small businesses that dont have a web site at all cos they dont feel the need for one.
I think most ppl would like to get thier hands on the hardware that they had ordered first & eyetech have enough on thier hands trying to for fill the back log than to worry about a web site.
So we have all the boards here but we are spending time to work on our web site so delivery will be delayed.
If they dont have time then they dont have time.
When some one comes up with a way to make time im sure the world will know about.

If AOS4 doesn't come fast, I'm gonna buy a C-One :-D

Yeah, my thoughts exactly, a C-One! (http://amiga.org/images/subject/icon14.gif) :-D

AOS4 will come on A1 as soon as it is considered to be
working flawlessly and probably not a moment sooner. The friedens
are perfectionists.

Finally we have the new hardware

@Alkemyst
This might be a first :-) but i agree with what your saying about websites but i still believe they should (aswell as other Amiga sites) update their websites.
Why? to let people who are coming back to the Amiga or new users know what is going on, they could even just post a url to the A1 mailing list or something.
Imagine if you knew nothing about the Amiga but you wanted a new Amiga you have heard of so you decide to browse the companies websites but the sites was badly out of date, would you think "I must read web forums and mailing lists"? nope.
-
I myself do think it would help the a1 if eyetech could update their site it would help me as well if you tell people there is a new amiga and where to go they all look at eyetechs site and say something like it has not been updated since november 2002 .although eyetech are very good when it comes to advice and amiga stuff ,i have had loads of stuff from them and they are very quick to send items and i have never had to complain to them unlike power computing who you wait twice as long for them to deliver and are not always perfect.not much longer and i might have my a1 ?. :-D

uhmm anarchic...can you say 'straw man argument'
compare this g3 board to a certain type of p4 and it could come up the winner under specific scenarios...but compare it to other intel or even other competing g3/g4 motherboards which were designed to be servers....at that point its got a hard row to hoe....and even apple is competing in this space now.
Still, I wish them luck, if they could be a success with ancient sdram memory, when other servers have DDR memory, and with 100mbit, when others have gigabit ethernet...with the lower clocked bus, the lower clocked processors, and being sold at a higher price point.....if they can do all that, then maybe they can get some volume and it will bring down the price of the consumer boards...but then if they get volume with all that, why bother lowering the price....since the world is upside down and pigs are flying, why not just rake in the cash.

erm i have had mine for a week now....told u guys it back then...
and i live in norway.
i dont consider it as news anynore lol....its 1 week since i got it...5 days since i put it in a tower and 4 days since i powered it ON ...now it will just sit there in the corner and wait for os4...
why? ...linux aint something i would wanna use unless i had to...and atm i dont :)

Hmmm.... when I get mine( and I hope very soon) I will probably install Linux on it just to put the machine through it's paces and to compare x86 versus PowerPC.
Maybe I will even leave it on it for a while because I have 33 GB of HD space and when OS 4 arrives there will be no way near that many stuff to put on it.

ROTFL. The guy that's missed the point by several parsecs!
Yer true. Mhz doesn't mean crap (as seen on many a post on Amiga.org). Even the x86 world has drastic differences now. AMD Athlon XP 3000+ with the barton core running at 2166Mhz (or thereabout) compares very well against a P4 3.06Ghz in benchmarks and real world tests... Enough said.
The power efficiency of CPU's do add up in the long term. In the laptop world Apple's use of powerPC's was always the more efficient in terms of power usage, which makes them more trully portable than the x86 bunch. Although an x86 laptop in the winter would be a great source of heat.
Anyways I am seriously itching for a new Amiga :) As soon as I see that AmigaOS 4.0 is shipping I will be buying an AmigaOne for sure;)

Did Alan forget relatively cooler and IPC bias "Pentium M"?
-
Yer true. Mhz doesn't mean crap (as seen on many a post on Amiga.org). .
One can't rely on just IPC i.e. as AMD has stated "Instructions per cycle"(IPC) x "clock speed".
Note that Intel plans to increase thier own IPC increases via Prescott and Pentium M cores.
Even the x86 world has drastic differences now. AMD Athlon XP 3000+ with the barton core running at 2166Mhz (or thereabout) compares very well against a P4 3.06Ghz in benchmarks and real world tests...
Dependent on the applications being run. Relying on IPC alone has limits.
Note that AMD Athlon64/Opteron 12(integer)/17(floating point) stage pipelines for clockspeed increases. AMD did recognized that they need clock speed increases in the near future.
Athlon XP only has 10(integer)/17(floating point) stage pipelines. The current AThlon XP 2800/3000+ could be overclocked @ ~2.4Ghz without going to liquid cooling (i.e. head room reserve for future and last K7 Athlon XP 3200+).

2 G3@600 are better than 1 P4@3000 when talking about servers: you're spreading the load. Of course,
Are you claiming that Dual G3@600 beats 1 P4@3000 (in trems of processing power)?
Note that Pentium 4@3.0Ghz's FSB bandwidth kills the current G3's FSB bandwidth. Should one dig up the old dual G3 PowerMac benchmarks?
that's assuming you can get a P4 + cooling system into a 1U case.
Did you forget "Pentium 4" Xeon 1U systems? (Same market segment for 1U AMD Opterons).
-
It is rare that a server requires raw processing power. Of course, that's assuming you can get a P4 + cooling system into a 1U case.
IF "raw processing power" is not the focus, the products that would be in this segment would be X86 chips based on Transmeta (both 128bit and 256bit CPU lines) CPU and VIA's C3.
Note that Intel's cool running "Pentium M" would fit in this segment.
Reference for Transmeta 1U systems
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=Transmeta+1U+systems&meta=
Reference for VIA C3 1U systems

Reference for Intel "Pentium M" 1U systems
http://www.google.com.au/search?hl=en&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&q=%22Pentium+M%22+1U+systems&meta=
There are at least 4 main X86 CPU vendors not just two. Note that "Pentium M" is different from "Pentium 4" based cores.
Better SWOT analysis would be factoring other X86 based solution outside "Athlon/Opteron" and "Pentium 4" based solutions.

@mips_proc,
If you're using it as a web or mail server, that P4 is going to be on as much as the G3/G4 system, so the performance increase is not that critical. Granted, if you're running a rendering farm, the extra performance of a 3Ghz P4 over a 700Mhz G4 is going to favor the P4, but I'd suggest that both render farms will still be running 24-hours a day.
The second argument is that, because of the lower power consumption, there's also less heat generated, meaning you can pack more of these into the same space without having a melt-down. If you've got limited space, this might be of interest. The over-all speed is only one factor in the argument.

This is just brililant news! I can expect my A1G4XE-board by the end of the month! Great stuff, Eyetech!
By focusing primarly at the server market to expand the volume of AmigaOne sales, are really a great step and a perfect one! Finally the 8 years of darkness are now HISTORY! Now the LIGHT has come to stay! Maybe GOD has got an AmigaOne, too? :-) :-) :-) :-D :-D :-D :-D :-) :-) :-) :-)
"Hi, Baby! Check out my new sunglasses!" :-) :-D 8-)
