Title: Going to have some fun building an A4000 Tower
Post by: doctorq on October 03, 2003, 11:02:56 PM
Hi,

in a couple of weeks I'm having a full week off, and can't think of any better way of spending my time than to do something with my Amigas.

I got an Amiga 4000 which is placed in a Micronik 4000 ISA tower (the first version), but I also recently bought a Mirage Power Tower for A4000 with Mediator and everything.

Personally I'm not keen on the Mirage tower, all to unstable in my opinion, and not enough room. That's why I'm going to install the Mediator board, in the Micronik tower, which I find quite better than the Mirage. Anyone done the same as I'm planning? I could use some advice :-)

The Mediator board uses a P9 connecter, and the PSU in the Micronik doesn't have one of those. But I have an PSU I don't use anymore, which has this connecter, so can I cut off this connecter and attach it to the Micronik PSU in any way?

I'm going to use a CyberStormPPC 060/233, but I have heard something about cooling the board to the max, or else I will break it. Which chips should I take extra care off? And by the way, would it be best to only install fastram on the cyberstorm, or also on the motherboard? Anyone tried installing more than 128 MB on a CyberStormPPC card? Is it possible?

I'm going to install a fan on the backplate of the tower, but what's best? Blowing air into the tower, or reverse the fan so heat comes out? I would like to make the computer as silent as possible, so could anyone recommend some lownoise fans?

Thank you for your time, and for your advice ;-)

Quiet_PC (http://www.quietpc.com/uk/) Has quiet components (ball-bearing fans for instance)

I've read where computer fans work much better blowing out.

Hi,

The reason for fans working better "Sucking" rather than "Blowing" is mainly due to presure differential & stagnant airflow. High pressure heats air and also introduces heat from the fan, low pressure cools it. Also "Sucking" creates better airflow due to less dead spots.
However a combination of fans could improve efficiancy by blowing directly on hot spots as long as cfm "cubic feet per minuet" blowing is less than cfm sucking.

@doctorq

The "stste of the art" in coolings, is the new Mac G5 tower.(9 fans)

It uses some fans that "blows in" air inside the case (with its relative filters) and other that blows out (IIRC for thermal convention pourpose).

You should use 1 fan that blows in, in the front of the tower (remember the filter) and another one that blows out at the rear of the case.

Ciao

Have fun! I had a blad putting y A3000 in a Elbox tower! Its a great system. I agree the A4000 version is a bit small. It came out first is all I can think of for the reason. As long as the Mikronic one will accept the boards and line up it should be a simple process. Just do as the others have said for cooling. Have a good fan taking air into the tower at the front bottom of the case. Then put at least one more at the back top of the case.

I would rather that I didn't have to put a fan in the front of the kabinet... Couldn't I just make a hole for a fan in the top of the back, and install a fan that blows air into the tower, and install a fan in the middle sucking air out? Mayby create a diversion to the middle fan to suck from the bottom?
