For those of you with short memories, Sharp was one of the most highly touted Amiga partners at one time. Now you can get the Sharp Zaurus SL-5500 PDA which can run AmigaDE for $169.00
Read more for details, and yes, you can still load AmigaDE on it, though it does violate the device's warranty.
From dealnews.com (http://dealnews.com) :
"The Sharp Zaurus SL-5500, a Linux-based handheld, costs $198.92 at HSN.com. If available to you, a 15% off coupon cuts the net price to $169.08, the best we've seen by $100. Add $8.95 for shipping. Features include 240x320 color TFT screen, 64MB RAM, pull-out QWERTY-style keyboard, 206MHz StrongARM processor, USB connectivity, and both CompactFlash and Secure Digital slots. Offer ends April 17, 2003. "

Seriously. There are those out there who still want the device and they still want to run Amiga DE on it. I know at least three people who've already bought them for exactly that purpose.
-
The hardware sounds nice but I wouldn't want to run Linux on it (or DE, before anyone says it). Or CE. *brrr*

So how _do_ one run AmigaDE on the SL550?
I have had one since summer, but I havent figured out yet where to get DE for it.
I am curios though, does it run onrop of linux? Does it run on all by itself, and if
so, how much of tha hardware is actually supported (CF, proprietary SD-slot
controller, sound etc)

You have to flash it with a new ROM, but I don't think you should bother. There's only an old version of DE available as far as I know. A lot has happened since version 1.0 and the applications that are currently written for Amiga-Anywhere won't een run on it unmodified anymore. Going to Tao's intent version 1.3 gave us a lot of improvements, but at the cost of backward compatibility. If you want to have a PDA with Amiga-Anywhere running on it, buy one of those thingies with a microsoft OS for now .... other platforms are in the works (I have a Compaq iPAQ myself, which works great).
The Zaurus is an excellent device (although on the previous devices the battery was drained pretty quickly), but if you want a PDA that can run Amiga-Anywhere right now you shouldn't spend your money on this device. Maybe later :)

would it not be possable to run the Linux client on the PDA? Or am I talking out of my a*se?!

Got bitten by the Amiga1 Coupon deal.

@Jurassic:
So have you tried to get your ca$h back? No? Then why keep moaning about it :-x .
Feel free to ignore me =).

LOL! Very nice toy :-)

It would be possible if we had a linux client for that processor. There is a runtime for Linux on X86, but the client needs to be compiled for the correct target processor to be able to run.
This is the case for WinCE as well, but more effort has gone into this, so most target processors are already supported here.

Very interesting that it runs Linux, but you need to run Windows on the PC you wanna sync it with. Yeah, that's sensible. I also make things with Linux on them, but I wouldn't want to tell the customer he can't use this or that operating system on his PC to use our product.

This machine has a high cool factor.
The things I want in a PDA, are a keyboard built-in, large screen, wireless, built in camera, high end processor, and low cost.
Yes, I want it all, but it needs to be a desktop replacement in a pinch, and I need to telnet into work, maybe citrix...from anywhere over a wireless connection.
I have been looking at the latest Palm clie, the 800 dollar model with the 2.1 megapixel camera (though I can find the 240k camera version for less than 300).
500 dollar premium is too much just to get a better camera, and yet I don't want it without the better camera.
OH yes, but the PDA in this article is ultra cool, and was one I seriously considered buying as well. I appreciate the update on the price....I'm going to hold out for a while longer though.
If I was really interested in AmigaDE, then this would be a natural buy. Since I couldn't care less about AmigaDE, I won't be jumping in at this price point.
Lest people think I never buy, I bought a US Robotics Palm Pilot Personal 512k model...years ago, and it was a great value. People thought I had brought a Nintendo to business meetings though....I was too cutting edge.....then later got a Palm III, and people just thought I was so behind the times, what with their Palm V's and Palm VII's....lol

what a *SWEET* new *AMIGA*!!! thats such a good *AMIGA* I might get one of those *AMIGAS*

What I'd really like is an upgrade to my Psion Revo that ran Linux, MorphOS, AmigaOS, etc, some of those. It could be just a little bit bigger and still fit in my pocket, but it should have long battery life, some sort of ethernet connectivity, able to use a gig+ Compact Flash card (work on the go!), etc. And be able to sync data to/from desktop software (I use KDE 3.1..). I'd be happy :)
-
That's not correct, you don't have to run Windows on the PC you want to sync with. You can use Qtopia desktop, download it from Trolltech's web site.

I have yet to see _any_ version of DE avaible _anywhere_ for the Z.
