LAS VEGAS (Jan. 09, 2003) -- Sony Electronics has introduced the next generation of its Dual RW drives, the first combination drives for the PC to support the DVD+RW, DVD+R, DVD-RW and DVD-R formats.
The internal DRU-500AX and the external DRX-500ULX drives are capable of recording to both 4X compatible DVD+R and DVD-R discs at up to 4X speeds, offer enhanced software for mastering and drag-and-drop file management, and play back DVD-recordable media faster than before.

yes, these combo drives area really nice one's but... does makecd/burnit/masteriso/whatever work with them ?
-
Once you support DVD-R there's no point to supporting DVD+R
-
But didn't Sony "invent" DVD+R?
If so, they should at least support it!?

Nice products but Sony no doubt will be the first to whine when people use their new hardware to pirate ps2 games.

Have you tried to get one of these drives in england no one seems to be able to get hold of the dam things my sisters boyfriend has been trying to get one for over 2 months .Its not that special now though lg electronics are making an all format dvd writer and unlike the sony ive seen one in pc world so i know they can be bought easily, if sony dont stop messing us about we will all buy the lg drive wich is proberly more reliable than the sony anyway. :-? :-? :-? :-)
-
I hope they make them more reliable that current dual drives - those things often don't last for more than 8 months. Maybe it's because they use all the cheapest components to make the drive affordable.
-
@Strobe
The DVD+R & DVD+RW formats are supposed to be more reliable.
Anyways, I read this news in January.. I've just been waiting for the price to come down.
DVD+RW is the format to replace VHS :-D
-
Pth..
Optical has and still sucks for backup. They're SLOW, unreliable, and have a low shelf life compared to hard drives. Total pain in the ass. The only reason to use DVD is to make DVD movies and only DVD-R is compatible, DVD+R is not.
As for replacing VHS I would bet my money on DVRs, not crummy optical media. A DVD only holds 90 mins unless you pay through the balls for a DVD-9 burner! What's the point of that?
The only point to DVD+R was the DVD+R *only* burners were cheaper due to licensing. Having a burner which supports both the useful and useless format and costs more money is less than pointless.

From thisDVD+RW Alliance (http://www.dvdrw.com/customerbenefits.html) site...
Points on DVD+RW format:
1.. Quick Formatting
Blank DVD+RW/+R disks can be formatted within seconds for immediate use.
2.. Edit Directly On the DVD disc
Lossless-linking technology enables you to perform basic editing tasks right on the disc. No need to reload all your DVD contents back to your PC to make minor changesNo need to re-burn an entire DVD after making small edits
3.. DVDs created using the DVD+RW rewritable and DVD+R write-once disks can be viewed on nearly all* DVD players and DVD-ROM drives - the most compatible format on the market.
4.. Huge Storage Capacity. The DVD+RW/+R format stores up to 4.7 GB on a single disc - allowing you to record up to 3 hours of video, store thousands of photos and save hundreds of mp3 music files or other data.
5.. Variable bit-rate technology means you no longer need to sacrifice quality for quantity, or vice-versa. DVD+RW/+R ensures quality playback while maximizing storage capacity.
6.. Speed. DVD+RW/+R format writes 2.4 times faster than competing DVD rewritable formats - giving you the power to burn an hour's worth of video in less than 25 minutes!
-
4.7Gig is not a "Huge Storage Capacity". That's the same capacity as a single-layer DVD-R. 3 hours of video my ass, maybe 3 hours of crappy grainy video.
The ability to edit on disk is really stupid. I don't care if DVD+RW is 20 times faster than DVD-RW, NOBODY in their right mind would edit video on an optical drive!
DVD is like print media, it's only useful as an end product. As such only DVD-R is useful since that is the only format that works on DVD players. If I wanted to edit my video for my own use I wouldn't use optical in the first place!
BTW #3 is an outright LIE. The only reason they can get away with saying that without being hauled into prison is the asterisk. Allow me to show you what that asterisk means:
* NOT!
