Title: Microsoft Buys VirtualPC.
Post by: asian1 on March 03, 2003, 05:18:44 PM
Microsoft had bought Connectix Virtual PC software (X86 PC Emulator for PowerPC).

Perhaps in the future they will create VPC for Linux PowerPC on Articia based motherboards.

By what I read in the article, it looks like M$ is more interested in being able to run Linux on XP servers as an application. then pushing more into PPCland.

Simple, they see it as a threat. Development will halt till the company ceases to exist. Typical Macroshaft.

"In a statement, Apple praised Microsoft's move.

"Adding Virtual PC to its product portfolio is yet another example of Microsoft's continued commitment to the Mac platform," said Ron Okamoto, Apple's vice president of Worldwide Developer Relations. "Virtual PC has helped people who want to own a Mac but need to run legacy PC applications. We're glad to see Virtual PC go into such good hands." "

LOL!!

I hope someone makes a good emulator like that for AmigaOS, so that in the future, in  the times when PPC goes ahead in the race, people really take notice of it. There's no way that one is gonna be a good product now  :-x

It's worth pointing out that VirtualPC is not a PPC only application, and should therefore not be seen in that light alone.

Do Microsoft see it as a threat? Why would they do that, when more copies of VirtualPC in use most likely lead to more copies of Windows operating systems in use, each one needing its own license?

As to Microsoft's reason for this purchase, only time will tell. They might want to limit it to running Microsoft operating systems only, or they might want to be able to run Linux on XP servers (though I'm not sure why they would want to encourage that).

Is this a move against the PPC or Apple? I doubt that very much, though I expect to see development of the PPC version take a back seat in the future.

They know very well that people who buy they're crap OS are the ones that get it originaly with the computer, in 9x% cases.

I think if  MS uses VPC and doesn't let it die, they will use the technology to make a "port" of Office for Mac or Linux.  All they will have to do is write for Windows, then wrap the VPC around their software and sell it a Mac or Linux version.

Microsoft may have bought VirtualPC so that they could limit it to
Apple hardware.

Microsoft has money invested in Apple.  One more reason to buy a
Mac over other alternative systems is good news for both companies.

Now it will be even harder to get VirtualPC for Amiga...  :-(

M$ motivation:
A) Kill x86 emulators
B) Run 32 bit apps on 64 bit CPUs
C) Stop maintaining PPC versions of their Office apps (mac users would need to be happy with the VirtualPC & x86 versions of Office apps)
D) They just want to cause harm to the rest of the world.

Now, we won't be able to buy a licence to port VirtualPC on our Amiga new system (OS4 or MOS).
I'm sure they will sink the company in a few months time...

Sorry, M$ has no money invested in any Apple thing, no more.
Their shares has been sold. Apple is even "free" from Explorer and Office (since the 5-years agreement with M$ has expired), in fact they developed Safari and support Open Office (and custom apps such as Keynote)

Yeah, I think they were more interested in the underlying server technology (IIRC) - ie the way VPC works, than they were in the application itself.

Or something :-)

Well, I tend to believe one of the people who works at Connectix:

I won't say anything more about the deal for the moment, except this: turn your paranoia meter down a few hundred notches, all of you. Nobody's going to "kill" any of the Virtual PC products. Most of the engineers who worked on the products over the past few years will continue to do so. And with the greater resources available to us, we will be able to expand the teams and make the products even better and more solid. Personally, I'm really excited about the whole thing!

Frankly, I think it's about damn time we had good x86 emulation in Windows, to help run older software.  It would have been nice if Microsoft had included proper x86 and PC BIOS emulation [better than they did], so DOS apps would run under Win32.

As for having Virtual PC on other platforms, only time will tell.  I doubt they will raze Virtual PC altogether.

Also note that Virtual PC has already been a Microsoft partner in the past.  It is available with a fully licensed copy of Windows bundled with the emulator.  Good point, B. Hoggitt.
