MorphZone Opens!
MorphZone (http://www.morphzone.org) is the new community portal for MorphOS users; including the MWD (Morph Web Directory), in-depth articles, forums, reviews, and more! MorphZone membership is free, as our services are geared to help cultivate the MorphOS community towards the future.
While many sections of MorphZone are currently under construction, the staff and moderaters have deemed that we can announce the opening of our forums. Beyond the expected forums, MorphZone's forums include several private forums, including forums for "the scene" and "Phoenix." There is also a special forum called "Generator," which will see special posts from people associated with Genesi to answer user's questions (these times will usually be announced a week or so in advance).
Soon, MorphZone will have an Ambient/Desktop contest, with the winners receiving a prize and their screen-grab will be published on several "partner" sites. Registered users can also adjust the look of MorphZone by selecting a different theme in their user-profile. These themes will allow MorphZone members to adjust the look and feel of MorphZone according to the browser that they are using at the time. MorphZone also maintains a news-feed from MorphOS-News.de to help keep pace with the world around us (thanks www.morphos-news.de). MorphZone.org promises to be a leap forward for the MorphOS community.
Finally, MorphZone wouldn't have been possible without the help of many friends, associates, and the community itself. The webmasters of MorphZone would like to thank the following people, institutions, and groups: Wayne Hunt (Amiga.org), Bill Buck, Raquel Velasco, MorphOS-News.de, VaporWare, #MorphOS on ARCNet, Jobbo, Phoenix, Hooligan, and many others.
Sincerely,
Targhan

Yes, cultivate the MorphOS community by gutting the Amiga community. :-D
-
The Amiga community has already been gutted by Windows, Mac and Linux markets, including UAE emulators running on those platforms..
-
@CyberViking2000
You confuse MorphOS with AmigaInc's AmigaDE, which contractually prevents those developers from working on AmigaOS stuff without express permission from Amiga Inc. (To the best of my knowledge that is).
-
now now people, lets not have another flame fest please. ;-)
-
Nicely said jumpship :-)
This site looks nice, but for all users of IE who go there, you don't see the links before you go over with your mouse. You can select another "theme" with wchich you select a different look of the site! :-D
(With Voyager or IBrowse you don't have this problem though :-D :-D)

Needs some work, like in the area with the black text on black or dark background.
-
including UAE emulators running on those platforms..
That statement doesn’t hold true for some of the cases. Note that the Amiga Forever package is a licensed product from Amiga Inc.
-
You confuse MorphOS with AmigaInc's AmigaDE, which contractually prevents those developers from working on AmigaOS stuff without express permission from Amiga Inc. (To the best of my knowledge that is).
Any proof of this?
-
It has to be said, those MorphOS butterflies are beautiful. We need something like this for the AmigaOS, an animal which represents the word Amiga..uhm..Yes, I've got it: a beaver! ;-) :-D
-
:-D

If anyone needed evidence to say Genesi wants to have their cake and eat it, this is it. Their userbase want the right to call themselves Amigans, and yet at the same time partition themselves away from the rest of the community.
Well, they can't. Pick one: become Yet Another Obscure OS With Virtually No Users (TM) or stay in the Amiga circles. It's their choice.
-
Hello KennyR,
I think you're in minority saying this.
The last few weeks (months??) I've read here more like:
Let them have their own site and discuss things and leave us alone.
(to simply say this. Oh, don't ask me for links, just check those heated topics about AOS4 vs MorphOS.
Ofcourse there were only a few people saying these kinds of stuff, but the majority didn't say anything)
For me personally: I like Amiga.Org and especially because there are so many people with different kinds of hardware visiting this site (even people who don't own Amiga's! :-D).
I took the step of just starting the thread of Pegasos, and look, it did it ok :-)
I would love to see this going on with OS4 and AROS and MophOS, etc, etc. on this site.
On the other hand it isn´t bad for a site where there is more specifically stuff for MorphOS about problems and solutions written by it's users.
I think when AOS4 will become available for everybody You'll see Amiga.Org more transformed to a faq for AOS4 problems.
I don't think this is bad either :-)

From the bottom news item over there, "Keep up the great work targhan!" I guess this means you do the work over there as well... Explains the layout being for the most part *very* similar (disregarding the skins) Being a webmaster there and here might raise a few eyebrows. I say this as the sites would normally be seen as competing for the same community members.
Teotwin raises an eyebrow...
-
Good Job! Great site! Thank you!
Why not two sites, two user groups, etc.
Pick BOTH!
More is better in this case.
:-D
R&B :-)
-
@bbrv
Why not two sites, two user groups, etc.
I guess you mean AmigaOS and MorphOS, so are you implying that there is a one site for each user group? therefore saying that the morphos users are going to use your site and leave amiga.org? or would you rather m-os users stay here as well and will you allow AmigaOS supporters to post AmigaOS articles at your site? Im sure you can see what im getting at...
If you read thru my recent posts you will find one that refers to the user groups separating (http://amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1310), so i think that opening this site is a fantastic idea, assuming that it will be "the place to be" for m-os users, and amiga.org will be "the place to be" for ao-s users. What do you think bbrv? seems fair enought to me!
-
hehe teotwin, I like your argument :-)
-
That is very wonderful news.
Now maybe I can get some freakin' peace.
Sure gonna hate to see all of you go.
-
@teotwin
Teotwin raises an eyebrow...
Am I not allowed to work on multiple sites now? I guess my in progress REBOL site must go away, huh? Should I scrap my plans for a LinuxPPC site that would help all of our A1 friends out? Oh no, heaven forbid someone speak of the evil penguin on *this* site!
Oh yeah, I run Amithlon, and have an Elbox Mediator in my A1200. I guess that isn't good enough to be an Amigan anymore? How about my $50 donation to the "missing t-shirt club" fund, was that enough?
I occationally write for Bill Griffon's "The New Amigans," does that make me the enemy? I'm not the greatest programmer that ever lived, but I think I've written some helpful little ARexx programs and installer scripts. Does this fact make me an enemy of the Boing-Ball-State? When I tried to "publish" the UGN-Times newsletter (with very little help on the authorship side), was I already selling out?
Am I really the enemy, or is it just your point of view?
-
Both means both...:-D
Check MorphZone for info later today...;-)
R&B :-)
-
Oh you want to twist it that way do you, fine, how about this...
Now, i can pussy foot around the issue if you like, or i can say straight out "amiga OS and morph OS are competing *commercial* products", and i see you are involved in promoting morph os news on amiga.org & the morph site, Im damn sure that ill see very limited AmigaOS news to appear on the morph site ...unless its a convenient (knee-jerk)response to this message bbrv... and i doubt that it will be a common occurance in the long term either.
Its got nothing to do with the number of sites you work on, its the fact that they are COMPETING COMMERCIAL PRODUCTS. And if i was concerned enought and thought it was a conflict of interest and that you have covert intentions I WOULD HAVE SAID IT, but as i dont, i simply raised an eyebrow.
You can work on all the sites you want, did i say you couldnt, i didnt think so. in regards to the sites looking similar, did you hear me say that was a bad thing, did i phase it as an insult, did i say you shouldnt do it? i didnt think so, all i said is that its because you are responsible for a.org as well which explains the similar look, and if you want to be a tosser and bring the "amigan" word into it then so be it. But answer me this, in which sentance of my last post did i mention you ware not an amigan? or even imply it? Sounds like someone put up the defensive walls a little too early to me...
What is it that scares you so much when people mention that the two groups (a-os/m-os) should seperate? I still maintain it would be the best move for both parties... Im not here nor there on m-os, i dont support or deter it becuase it has nothing to do with me and i know nothing about it, but if the flame wars that continuously spring up over trivial details dont indicate to you that theres something wrong with the mixing of the fanatics then you need to open your eyes a little more...
-
AmigaInc's AmigaDE, which contractually prevents those developers from working on AmigaOS stuff without express permission from Amiga Inc. (To the best of my knowledge that is).
Well, unless they changed the SDA contract since I signed it, your knowledge is wrong. There is nothing in the SDA which stops me from developing for *any* other platform, including AmigaOS. Amiga can't stop me - if there *had* been such a condition in the SDA, I wouldn't have signed it. The SDA I signed (and it's standard afaik) only covers work I do for the AmigaDE, and that's it.
-
Sound like someone put up the defensive walls a little too early to me.
Yeah, I guess I did. Was arguing with someone else, so I suppose it carried over. I apologize.
About Amiga/MOS being seperate, some of it should be--and some of it not. I suppose it really boils down to the topic at hand. There are some MorphOS news item that would just bore an anti-MOS person to tears, and vice versa. Yet, there are enough family ties that complete seperation probably isn't possible.
-
Yeah Spidey, it seems there are some (if not many) who want the two factions to become completely estranged and just ignore and hate each other from a comfortable distance.
I'm still not sure why anyone would want this, except maybe through jealously or hate (no offence to teotwin, but I don't understand his motivation - I politely invite him to explain it to me if he likes). I mean, the Amiga userbase is in the low thousands at an optimistic guess, and many of those probably use emulators anyway and are not interested in OS4 or MOS.
MorphOS will have an absolute maximum of 700 users until September at least, OS4 has zero users right now and probably can't expect much more than MOS when it eventually does get any. Neither side can survive on their own, despite what their companies may say. There's no chance of it. I believe the number of sales of MOS Knights and Merchants or OS4 Sin will quickly teach us all this.
I just think having exclusive websites for either AmigaOS or MorphOS is just exclusionist and elitist and will result in the slow strangling of both sides, not to mention even more prejudice and ignorance in the future. Maybe later, if the factions grow into decent numbers would a split be justified; but I think thats a long way off right now.
A religious person might be able to tell you about the parable of Solomon and the baby...
-
Just for your information guys, I'll bust chops on the Pegasos suppliers as quickly as I would AmigaOS suppliers.. Mai's Big-Deal (http://www.morphzone.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=10) Hrm.. doesn't Mai do the northbridge for the Teron too? Maybe I should post another copy here...?
@earlier-stuff
Hrm.. I may have been mistaken about the DE license. (It's not as if even the license coming with Borland isn't scary to look at either... What's with companies and these over-legalized nightmares to read?) :-?
-
Nice website :-)
-
Hello KennyR,
Thank you for explaining :-)
I agree with trying tot split while the userbase isn't big, isn't a good thing.
Personaly I don´t think that the purpose of this new site is to divide right now, but to give extra information to the MorphOS users. But again, that's what I'm thinking of this. :-)

Hi, again great job Targhan. We will work on the G4 Announcement Part II as soon as we get this posted. It will appear on the MorphZone later today. :-D
@teotwin -- Please come see us in Sydney when we are there for CeBIT in May. We will buy you a Fosters and we can discuss anything you want. Fortunately, we will have the time between now and then (and the things that have or not happened) to consider. How about we call it a truce until then? ;-)
@KennyR -- We appreciate your post and Biblical reference -- good story, great message (anyone interested that would be 1 Kings 3). :-)
@Mountain_Myst -- You would have more peace if you just thought about what you had to say before you posted. :-o
Have a great day!
R&B :-)

Not a bad site but nothing fantastic. :-D

Do you have planned any more shows in the region there? Singapore maybe?

The site looks nice, Targhan.
Although, whether intentionally or not :-D , the site is unreadable in IE5 (blue text on blue background), looks fine in Opera 7, though.
-
Hi!
Just posted this:
www.morphzone.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=11
@Coder -- we are planning on visiting VIP in Melbourne after CeBIT Australia. We are also headed to New Zealand and Japan on that trip. No plans for Singapore yet! You are in Denmark -- are you going to start a User Group there? :-)
R&B :-D
P.S. Hi Blomberg! Thanks for the positive comment!

P.S. Hi Blomberg! Thanks for the positive comment!
It wasn't directed at you.
People, who direct comments at you are attacked and called names.
-
@Blomberg
The default theme is patched by Targhan to be displayed coorectly with
Amiga-browsers; so anyone who visits the Morphzone with an alien
browser like IE5 should choose a different theme in his profile.

Ah I see, that makes sense :-)

What is it that scares you so much when people mention that the two groups (a-os/m-os) should seperate?
Why does it scare you that there are no two groups at all, just one group that has an election coming up?
By that logic, "Why vote? Just split the country up based on political party."
-
Bah, Blomberg!
This only happens when people are rude first...;-)

Well, apparently it also happens when someone makes a comment, which the recipient doesn't have a proper reply to ... ;-) ;-)

@bbrv
You are in Denmark -- are you going to start a User Group there?
Frederik is in Denmark, I am in Holland. Well, just till April. Then I move to Thailand were I will work on some projects of my own and my study there.
Once we got the site up and running there will be a MOS section too. Because our plans or to do MOS games/programs too.

BULL!
The Amiga community was gutted by 10+ years of no
Amiga Company developing new hardware. :-x
The Amiga community was gutted by 10+ years of broken promises! :-x
Windows, Mac, Linux & UAE little to do with it.
Loki :-D
-
Loki, true: emulators didn't cause any of the problems we have now. But they also don't fix any.
-
@bbrb
"More is better in this case"
You mean like being able to run either MOS or the AmigaOS on a Pegagos?
Interesting how there's always an ulterior motive for making the association with the Amiga and its community. It's all take.
-
Hey,Ne_One!!!
Nice work with our photos!!
Can U send me a bigger one?
:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D:-D
-
Amiga companies are to blame not emulators.
Emulators filled the gap where people like myself needed the speed when promises of new hardware was just bullshit for years and years but hey lets not blame good old wonderful Amiga companies lets blame emulators and their users.
Uae developers and Bernie Meyer filled the gap very nicely with excellent products but get treated like dirt because some members of the Amiga community would rather people stick with old hardware than let people move on and use AmigaOS on the hardware they choose.
-
@Mountain_Myst -- You would have more peace if you just thought about what you had to say before you posted
On the contrary...
While I cannot say that I don't like you as a person, because I don't know you, I can say that I don't like you as a buisnessman.
I thought completely about what I wrote and don't feel bad about doing so.
In my mind, I am very glad that you have your own sites.
I hope that all Morph users will go there and leave amiga alone.
Just like I wished that you would leave Amiga Inc. alone.
Seperation of the two sides is the only way.
The only reason that you say you don't believe in that is because you want to destroy your competition before you leave.
I do not like your tactics.
I've seen them before in Bill Gates, and other people like him.
So yes, I do wish that you would leave the Amiga community alone, and go build your own platform without trying to destroy the Amiga spirit.
-
Most of the people who are developing for, using or interested in MorphOS come Amiga backgrounds (some of us go waaay back), enjoy using Amiga programs and APIs, buy (or have bought tons of Amiga software).
So where's the line to be drawn for the big divisio - supporting competing companies? As if that weren't always the case anyway. I bought one browser and destop publishing package, set of anim and paint tools, video tools, etc, and someone else chose differently. I bought certain expansion hardware and peripherals, someone else bought something else instead -
Does that mean we should all GO AWAY (and form little factions of a few people each? I think not. That satisfies a few people who are not capable of dealing with diversity or the idea of that there could be competition to that which they may have made holy. But it certainly isn't realistic. And just to placate a few "threatened" or antagonistic types is no reason to turn tail.
There is still a lot of crossover here, a lot of common commerce, and a hella lot of history. I might add that a lot of multi-platform use that has been discussed and compared, with no lasting harm to any animals or humans ; }
...Ease up, relax, vote with your wallets and not with guns. No reason to always be rude or crude either. Things aren't so bad, not to the extent that some would portray. Are they?
Good work Targhan! - peace out!

I don't have a problem with competition.
I think that competition is great for the community.
I don't have a problem with Genesi or MorphOS in general. (except I don't think that cloning api's is appropiate)
I do have a problem with the Morph Side trying to destroy Amiga Inc.
I do have a problem with Morph users coming in here and saying terrible things about Amiga Inc. and Hyperion.
It used to not be like that here, but now with all the Morph users here, mixed with OS4 people, it's causing much division.
If you can compete and be fair about it....
Then I say great.
But that is not the way it is happening.
Instead, you see the Morph side trying to destroy Amiga Inc. and OS4 before they even get out of the gate.
That is not competing.
That is what I call a sucker punch.
And people that pull sucker punches are not the kind of people that I can agree with.
Mr. Buck...
You want my respect?
Start doing buisness the way it should be done.
If Hyperion and Amiga Inc. don't want to run thier OS on you machine, then leave them alone.
It's not up to you how they do thier buisness.
Quit trying to destroy Amiga Inc. for whatever reason and let both sides grow and thrive on the competition.
Of course, you probably don't care about respect, do you.
It seems that you just care about making your money no matter what it takes to make it.

I would be curious to see how MorphOS runs.

Yes, i heard thru the local grape vine that the peg would be there, and i fully intend on checking it out. In all honesty, i would far prefer the peg to a-one, based on the size of the board alone (i dont get stuck up on claimed features and pci slots etc) as im considering custom building a case but i want it to be small. Then all i would need is a-os running on it. Im not saying m-os is bad, its just not *my* target.
ps, fosters is the beer we export 'cause its not good enough for us ;-)
-
@kennyr, in reference to the communites splitting
I'm still not sure why anyone would want this, except maybe through jealously or hate (no offence to teotwin, but I don't understand his motivation - I politely invite him to explain it to me if he likes).
Sorry. i passed over your comment before. Indeed the explaination is rather simple, two words in fact "bitch fighting" thats all.
Indeed i believe that the members of each community should be closer in a perfect world, which would help both of them progress faster thru sharing of ideas, and learning from the advantages one may have over the other etc etc.
But instead when they come together they choose to sling mud and illogically slander the merits of the other??? You mentioned hate a few times in your message, but its the ridiculous baseless debates that go on that are responsible for the hatred of the other side. Personally i have no hate or jealously toward m-os, i say with with 100% condfidence, infact m-os doesnt even rate on my care meter. So its not due to hatred or jealousy that i want them to split, its to create peace, dignity and respect for our entire community. If someone suggests a way to keep the groups together but put a complete and utter end to the bickering, then im all for it.
-
Paul_Gadd:
Emulators filled the gap where people like myself needed the speed when promises of new hardware was just bullshit for years and years but hey lets not blame good old wonderful Amiga companies lets blame emulators and their users.
Or in my case, emulators filled the gap when my Amiga died, and it just wasnt practical to spend a large sum of money buying a replacement A1200, tower, accelerator and all the other hacks that held the old system together, when an off the shelf PC was cheaper and faster and did the job just as well - and in some cases better - eg: UAE's P96 driver.
These new G4 Amigas are looking very attractive indeed though, and I could do with a new computer fairly soon. That said, I'm not sure I can bring myself to abandon applications like Photoshop, TopStyle, Dreamweaver and so on.
This brings us back to the big porting debate - bringing gtk+ and the like to the Amiga could bring GIMP and a variety of other applications across with it. Pity i'm no programmer ;-)
-
Thanks for explaining, teotwin. And I'm glad, too, that there's others out there who put the community first before personal ambition, prejudice, greed, or selfishness. You're one of those people.
-
I am not really bothered by M-OS it self the thing i am bothered about is the slander which M-OS opreate, They think that the'll win by destroying our faith in the amiga. This hasn't haapened to me and never will as i will be supporting the amiga till the day i die.
I have a problem with the M-OS user which are Single minded and think that M-OS is the only OS in the world which needs upkeeping. I just wish thbey could learn to not badger amiga inc constantly.
P.S. I am sorry if this provokes some flames to erupt, but this is what i am thinking and feeling.
-
Amiga Inc deserves it and gets it.
They are the only people I whine about.
I never whined about OS4 or Hyperion.
