Title: AmiBench closes
Post by: System on February 06, 2003, 02:05:15 PM
In a bit of a shock, Mark Wilson has chosen to close AmiBench.com (http://www.amibench.com/).  AmiBench was a great place to buy and sell Amiga goods.  Apparently, even on his birthday, he was being continually harrassed by a few of the zealots of this community.

More here (http://www.amibench.com/)

*sigh*

Well, I wish Mark all the best for the future... its a real shame, I bought my A4000 and my Cyberstorm through Amibench. I hope the arseholes who sent stupid mails to Mark are happy with what they've "achieved"  :-(  :-x

SWAUG's response to Amibench closing:

Mark,
Thank you for the many years of service that you have given to the Community.  It is valued by the majority although we have seen an example of the subversive minority today.

There are very little services like AmiBench available for other computer platforms and your site encapsulates the true ethos of the Amiga.  I hope that you find time to reflect on this emotive decision and reinstate AmiBench for the community.

To try and deter abuse being posted in the future, perhaps you could store peoples IP addresses when they are posting and secondly have a user registration system similar to eBays where you are able to rate users on past experiences.

Anyway, you have the full support of SWAUG and if this is the end of Amibench, our thanks for the years of service to the Amiga.

Well, instead of closing, why dont he just pass it over to someone else?

Typical a few morons ruin a good site for everyone else

@MrZammler,

For much the same reason that I refuse to "give" Amiga.org to someone else when I get a bit depressed over the situation.  A lot of a person's soul and hard work go into building a site.  Each site has a "soul" of it's own and it would be incredibly hard to either walk away from it, or to hand it to someone that you did not trust 110%.

Well this is sad news indeed :-( Mark, thankyou for letting me use the service you have provided over the last few years and I am sorry you have chosen to close AmiBench. If I can help in any way I will, again I am sorry. I know we havent seen eye to eye on some things in the past but I respect you and I thankyou from the bottom of my heart. I hope you can enjoy whats left of your birthday, take a bit of a time out, think things over and perhaps you might decide to keep AmiBench running or pass it on to someone else. I myself would be happy to run the site, But I dont know a great deal about webmastering nor do I have anywhere I could host it myself :-( If you were here I would deffinatly take you to my local and buy you a pint or several.

Disgusting,

Why does people always attack Wilson?

He provides a buy/sell website and gets treated like crap,

Happy Birthday Mark and dont let these evil monsters get you down,

As for the "PiracyPolice" you piece of ####.

An end to another era, Amibench will be missed.

Good luck with the future Mark.

This is a sad day indeed. I haven't used amibench for a while but used to buy and sell there regularly.

Re. Piracy: The last time I did use amibench it was to swap my CD32 for a 10gig HD.
The other chap lived near Glasgow so I arranged to meet him in town. As he handed me the drive he told me that OS3.9 was installed on it and loads of games.  When I got into the drive I noticed that the games were cracked pirate versions. I formatted the whole thing anyway and I still use OS3.5. I felt a bit funny about having 'purchased' pirate software but wouldn't dream of trying to blame Tecno for 'allowing it to be sold'. That really is pathetic.

I hope he resurrects Amibench but can understand if he does not.

This also shows that Wayne is not alone in feeling exasperated with some of this 'community'.

Mark,

Many people will miss your excellent service.  I used Amibench to get many useful hardware bits for my system, without which I am sure it would have perished long ago.  A heartfelt "thanks" for all your support over the years.  Amibench wil be missed.

Another nail in the Amiga coffin.

Sorry to here this Techno and all the best for your future projects. Why is it the whole community suffers because of a few petty individuals?

Ok. To say I'm shocked is a bit of an understatement.

My email has being going crazy, and so have all the Amiga news sites from what I've seen and heard.

Its sobering to see so many people are upset about what I posted on AmiBench.

I think I'm going to have to re-consider what I said. For the next couple of days the site will remain closed. Maybe permently I'm not sure. I dont know what else I can say. I have no intention of 'handing' over the site to anyone else to run because then its just not the same.

I've had many offers of help and support and my email is going crazy.

I'm fed up with the Amiga 'Community'. Like Mark suggested, I think it's all dead like a dead snail. Let's face it, there's no community anymore, juts a bunch of arseholes who spoil the fun of dedicating one's last efforts to the Amiga.

Fed up of dumbers, fed up of Amiga vs Genesi, fed up of all this mess... :pissed:

Mark,

If you decide to stay, is there anything we can do to help AmiBench?  Whatever you decide to do, we wish you the best of luck.

:-( bought my A3000 and some CD32 stuff from AmiBench adverts.  It was a wonderful alternative to the often ridiculous prices on eBay.

I have bought at least half of my amiga system through Amibench.

I'll be sad to see it go just bacause of a load of morons.

I'm sure many of the people on Aorg who spend a lot of time on the net, including myself would be pleased to lend a hand if it's needed (how do you stop a moron on such a site?).

Thanks to Mark for the years of excelent service anyhow.

I'm sad to see this happen.  :-(

Mark, thank you for your Amiga "commmunity" efforts and have a nice birthday regardless of such behaviours coming from a few childish individuals!  :-)

I have e-mailed Mark offering to take over his site.  As some may know I am already hosting the web chat for Amiga.org IRC...

If he does not accept the offer, I will start a new one.

Well, I must admit this suprised me at first, but after reading what Mark's had to put up with, I can't blame him. Honestly, i'm suprised *any* amiga webmasters carry on going with the current state of the 'community', but that is for another time and place.

I hope things go well for Mark, whatever his decision over the next few days is. If Amibench goes permanently, it'll be a sad loss. I am, really, a new amiga user, in that i'd never used an amiga till about 5 years ago. Thanks to amibench my 2nd hand bog standard A1200 is now boosted up to the point where I can play MP3's. I've bought a lot over Amibench, and even sold some bits. But I guess things change...
Anyway, good luck, and do what you think is best  :-)

To be honest I haven't got anything more to say. So many posters have already reflected what I wanted to say apart from who are these moron's that seem to try and divide the Amiga community? And why don't they go and play with their Micro$oft 'Doze machines and leave everyone in piece.

Thanks again and good luck for the future.

Why are people blaiming windows users?

Clearly someguy has got ripped off in to buying "PIRATE AMIGA SOFTWARE" so they have attacked the webmaster (Mark) instead of being a Adult and informing Mark and co properly,

I wonder if you people will one day understand that there is some bad people in the amiga community.

I disagree with the some of the sentiments here.

I will start with what I agree with..., the Amibench site was a public service site, and that is wonderful that Mark provided this service for a time.

But if he wishes to stop running this service that is also very fine.  I am not upset about it, nor am I particularly concerned that someone sent him 'a bad e-mail'

If you read the post that sent Mark over the top, it was a simple post asking him why he aids pirating on his site, it used some bad language.

Its similar to writing a landlord why he allows crack dealers to operate in one of his abandoned buildings.

It may not be  fair to blame Mark for the illegal activity his site enabled, but its also not entirely surprising that someone blamed him either.

I suggest that it is overly sensitive to react emotionally to an e-mail coming from a user who got robbed and is upset.  That person blew off some steam at the person they could contact.  I am sure the pirates are long gone, or just don't care.

I don't blame him one bit for quitting the site if he's tired of these things...he doesn't have to do it, and beside the services he provided are duplicated elsewhere... but on the other hand, I do not understand *at all* why anyone is acting like something unusual happened, or this is unique to the Amiga community, and such thinking.

The problem is not unique to this community...in fact it is much worse in many other communities.

Ok! ok! You can all stop sending me emails of support now!

I think that my email box may explodes under the extreme pressure!

I thought about what I'm going to do with AmiBench.

there is still some respect and milage in the Amiga Community I've thought that there's no better thing to do with the site other than to put it back 'Online'.

You only have yourselfs to thank seeing as you did such a splended thing in sending me so many (and I mean many messages of support.

Its an amazing feeling to see people come out and say things about AmiBench which made me realise that its still very well respected in Amiga circles even if I'm not!

I guess AmiBench is bigger than me. And who am I to turn it off?

Thanks everyone. You really have made my day!

 :-)

There are quite a few as$holes in the Amiga community if you ask me. Mark and Amibench are good for the Amiga, anyone who decides to disagree with that just wants to cause trouble imho.

Are you going to release that Gloom map editor on Aminet yet?
