Title: CommodoreOne almost ready for mass-production!
Post by: redrumloa on January 18, 2003, 01:26:35 PM
First pictures of the CommodoreOne pre-production board are now  online (http://c64upgra.de/c-one/s_pictures.htm)

Source: ANN

The pictures section has been extended by 11 pictures of the pre-production board. Basic testing has already been done, all chips are responding positively to diagnostic access. A 100% test procedure will be developed this weekend.

I don't understand the point to this.  Don't people have better things to do then live in the past?!?

I'll only be impressed if someone ports Quake to it.

Hi,

A lot of people talk about this as if it is just a computer, wanted by some to play old c64 games, hence reactions like "living in the past and whats the point".
However, this is something more than "just another computer".
Let me explain:
First there is the fact that this machine is basically designed by one person. Being a student in ICT, I would LOVE to be able to do something like that.
Secondly, it is a system that comes fully documented. This means it will be something like the ideal system for hobbiests or indeed students to "play" with, in the meaning of: lets program a webserver on this thing, lets hook up some other microcontroller stuff, or whatever, just to learn and have fun in the mean time...
I for one cannot wait to try to port lwIP to this system, or make a uC/OS-II port.

For someone being interested in microcontrollers, electronics, ... this is a fantastic system. All the developmenttools are available, (c compiler is available for c64),... and not to forget, it has a "geek port" :-)

Look in the mirror! Do you know what website you are a member of? :-P

The C=one is just as meaningful as the A1 or Pegasos! 99.9% of the computing world will lump them all as useless.

Actually I'm starting to seriously wonder if the C=1 will sell better than the A1 or Pegger..

Well.... The C64 did outsell the 16bit Computers by far.... Many old timers will remember the fun they had wit good ol' Cee-sixty-four... Plenty of nostalgia sites as well...

Like me! Every once in a while I'll dig out the ol' SX64 and watch some of the demos I still have on floppy.

If I'm REALLY feeling nostalgic, I'll dig even deeper and watch some of the cheesy cracktros I made. Ah.. Nothing finer than remembering how much of a goober I used to be. :-P

I hate to say this, but in terms of hardware, this Commodore One is more of an Amiga than the schlepware that we're currently being offered.

For example, the Commodore One has REAL sprites.  These new "Amiga" compatible systems don't-- they use the same off the shelf generica (AGP cards) that Wintel clones and Macs do.  Same goes for color-bandwidth-saving modes (which is really ideal for video compression).  The Commodore One has something like HAM8 mode (24 bit modes are great, but there's a time and a place for everything;  the more video modes you have, the better). The new "Amiga" stuff lacks it.  Ask yourself, "What really makes Amiga One hardware any better than Mac hardware?"

Simply put, the new "Amiga" stuff is slapping together generic parts.  No innovation.   No additional hardware features to set it above the crowd.  At least the Commodore One has that.  If ONLY this C=1 woman and Mick Tinker had got together about 5 years ago.  Amiga Inc would be moot.
