Registered users for Quake 2 for AmigaOS can download an Update for Quake 2 at our Webpage.
Both a PPC and a 68k Update are provided. The Update fixes a bug in the GL Renderer from the first Update, a minor bug in the GUI, provides some more optimizations to the GL Renderer and changes the Output format for Screenshots to JPG.

It's nice to see updates to a product like this. It's professional
of you guys to keep supporting your product even after
commercial release despite the mudslinging that has been
going on. Most of the community really appreciate it, I
hope you know.
Keep up the good work!

Hi,
Both a PPC and a 68k Update are provided.
LOL, Quake 2 on the 68060, Cool
I like Hyperon as they continue to make 68K versions even for games like this.
Is anyone running the 68K version?
I bet it has to be 3D rendered

Let's hope it works with coldfire accelerators ;-)

Hi,
Just wanted to let people know that Hyperion's port of Quake 2 is awesome. In my opinion, easily the best, most impressive game to make it to the Amiga.
If you haven't tried it out, I highly recommend it. And, although I haven't had a chance to try out this new update yet, I tried out the one released just before Christmas, and it gave a noticable speed improvement.
I haven't tried the 68k version yet (just the PPC), but I'll give it a whirl tonight and let people know how it performs (i'm guessing it must be okay, or else Hyperion wouldn't have released it).

No way, 060 is too slow. I have the feeling the 68k version was provided for emulator users.

Sorrry but your totally wrong.
Hyperion do not officially support amiga emulators.
Q2 IS QUITE playable on 060 with voodoo3.
I was a beta tester.

Don't be so skeptical. I highly doubt Hyperion would go to the effort of a 68K version for emulator users given that they can already play Q2 on their PC.
I didn't get a chance to try the 68k version yet, but I'm sure it must perform ok for Hyperion to have released it.
There are a lot of people out there playing Quake1 on an 060, and in my opinion, Q2 plays as well or better than Q1 on my system, and there's a lot more going on in Q2.

Actually, the 68060 is capable of playing Quake 2. You need to use the provided tweaked config file which disables some of the effects, but then you *can* play on a 68060, even on the 50 Mhz variant.

Officially, they don't. But for them to waste potentially hundreds if not thousands of sales from the emulator people would be just stupid marketing.

The original Quake wasn't really playable on 060. (I suddenly hear thousands of squawks of indignation). I mean, you could maybe play it with a half-sized screen if you hacked the pak to disable lots of features...but then at certain points the game slows down to a slideshow, and internet play was very difficult.
Quake2 is without a doubt more CPU intensive. I expect the 060 will really struggle. I suppose 5-10fps is playable for some, but not for me. It just gives me serious migraines.
-
fyi... prior to getting my PPC, I had a 66mhz 060 which I played quake1 on. I used a few of the speedup patches available on aminet, and I got about 17fps (not stellar, but definitely quite playable). If I recall correctlt, that was at an 80% screensize.
You have to keep in mind that the Q2 engine is much better written and optimized than the one used for Q1. Also, Q2 makes use of 3D hardware (which does a good chunk of the work) whereas the original Q1 ports did not.

Well, if it works for you and you like it, then that's all that's necessary.
Sorry to sound a bit like a troll, but I'm just trying to say that crippling games just to get them to work or putting up with very slow frame rates isn't really worth it in my opinion. I just wouldn't like to see 68k people as disappointed with Quake2 as many were with Quake.
But as you say, if 060 is fast enough, there's no problem. I just haven't tried it. ;-)
-
Actually 90% of current Sales were *before* the 68k version was released. And I suspect even from those remaining 10% some are actually PPC sales...
so I do not see those hundreds or thousands of buyers... but well, maybe they will still come ? :)
Okay, one big problem with the 68k version was
that many people just did not believe it would
run fast enough on a 060... the earlier comment
in this thread shows this well enough...

That must be the biggest joke I have heard since a long time.
"Thousands" of sales from the emulator people ...
Wake up call! Amiga titles sell a few hundred at best.
I think you grossly overestimate the number of emulator users and their willingness to invest in Amiga software which is available for Windows.
We failed to see any noticeable increase in sales of Freespace (68K) despite the fact that it did work on emulators.
The reason why Quake 2 is playable on a 68060 with 3D accelerator is obviously because it is highly optimised and because it makes use of the 3D hardware acceleration.
