Title: Sendo cancels Z100 smartphone.
Post by: samdu on November 08, 2002, 01:51:15 AM
Yet again, another Amiga partner has pulled a product on which the DE was supposed to ship. According to the notice (http://www.sendo.co.uk/) on their web site, due to the inability to get source code from Microsoft, they are officially cancelling the Z100 "SmartPhone." Instead, they will be partnering with Nokia (hello Amiga, Inc. - Nokia rules the cel phone market - they're a partner you can't afford not to have!). >sigh<

The only problem I see for Amiga here is that any products coming out of Sendo will be released later rather than sooner.  Other than that, where's the problem?  Sendo still knows abou t Amiga.  The AmigaDE is not dependent on Microsoft but can run on top of other OSs (including Symbian).  Sendo is still going to need content, and I don't see why they would be dumping Amiga in this regards.  They only dumped Microsoft, from what I can tell.

Yeah, they definately pulled away from MICROSOFT, and not Amiga Inc. Some companies are smart. ;-)

I didn't mean to imply that Sendo had dumped Amiga necessarily. But, since there's no DE for Nokia phones, the future of the partnership is in question. My suggestion was that Amiga port the DE to Nokia. Couldn't hurt.

Nothing to worry about. Actually I prefer this smartphone to run Symbian, it makes the phone more attractive for me. :-)

Too bad for the extra delay though.

Don't worry. It takes a couple of WEEKS to do a full port of DE and Sendo needs many more MONTHS to get the new phone out. Don't think for one minute Amiga isn't working on it.. or Tao for that matter.

I for one like Symbian a lot and am happy to be developing for DE. Just imagine if all us DE-developers would have targetted the M$-platform instead of AA. We would all have to rewrite our software for it to work on the new Sendo. Now we just need a new runtime/player and our content will  run on Symbian phones as well.

Regards,

Onno

I don't think this means the end of opportunity for Amiga to settle on cellphone market. It seems to be the best think it could happen since Sendo joins the Nokia's team (huge one against Microsoft 's one).

I just hope delays won't be too long

Please bear in mind that amiga and nokia have been bedpartners just recently. Although this in no way makes it certain that nokia will choose amiga to develop content, it means that nokia knows about amiga, and that they before has estimated that the AA was good enough for one of their products (the product got flunked but anyway)

"...the future of the partnership is in question."

The future hasn't happened yet!

"...that Amiga port the DE to Nokia."

This has already happened.
Nokia runs SymbianOS,yes?
Well Amiga (acording to Bill McEwen
at a show in May) were working on a Symbian build
of DE,then! So if not ready now,it must be soon.

Perhaps they havn't replied to Sendo's recent statement
because they are doing a Symbian-DE deal with Sendo/Nokia?
Who knows?

Theres probably a lot of work going on behind the scenes
that we don't know about.
Do Amiga need to tell us about them.No.
They have enough work on there hands without having
to play babysitter to the community every time something
'differant' happens.
Sorry.....I've had a stressful day. ;-)

There's more things to come over the next few weeks.Hopefully.
