Title: Saving old floppy games
Post by: spuds on September 30, 2003, 02:56:42 PM
Hello again;
I have a pile of oldgames and utilities on amiga floppys and would like to port them to cd-rom format so I can run them on my Amithlon machine.  Is there a program that can create this on a amiga 2000? ( I do have a a running 2000 and a cd-rom w/burning software) I'd just like to run these on a faster machine. By the way the Amithlon is VERY FAST.

Thanks in advance
Spuds

If you have OS2.0 or higher and a harddisk then you can use whdload and JST to put your games on HD and then burn it on CD.  pack your utilities disk with lha and burn these lha files to CD.

I don't know how amithlon works but i believe it can run .adf disk images.
You can download adf progs and MANY old amiga games for free at http://www.back2roots.org/

Hmm ... Amithlon is not very compatible with games. Maybe 99% of the games will fail. Everything that tries to access the video chipset directly (bypassing the OS) will surely fail.

Amithlon is best for OS friendly utilities.
Everything that runs on Workbench should run (almost) without problems on Amithlon.

For running games on .adf format, try a wacky thing :

run the AMIGA port of UAE on Amithlon 8)

I've seen it somewhere ... Don't remember its URL, sorry.

last i checked amithlon doesnt have an emu.

anyway www.whdload.de  is the place to go , if your games are orginals.

and btw the machines i have tested amithlon on , WAS SLOW and buggy atleast compared to a full blown amiga with all hacks possible :)

and heh pegasos is even a better choice.
cheers

And there's some Amiga programs to create a .adf from an Amiga floppy disk.

That way it's possible to put those floppy disks on CDROM, on .adf format.

Aside from wanting to play the games on Amithlon, UAE or whatever, there's also the issue of the degradation of the disks - another reason to archive your old software

Amithlon is not a system for games, except the last few OS-friendly ones that don't use AGA or bang the hardware. These games virtually all came on CD anyway, and many were PPC. Your floppy games will just not work.

There is a 68k version of UAE - maybe this will work and you can play your old games. Otherwise you'll have to install Windows and use UAE from there. Of course this means Amithlon can't run at the same time.
