Well obviously this is fantastic news. Unfortunatly, the world wont take notice untill the OS is ready for the hardware. Soon, very soon, it shall all come together. I hope we can manage to get back a few BeOS converts (those who used AmigaOS and converted to BeOS).
At least now, we shouldnt have as much if any shrinkage in the Amiga Community. This is a time to grow. We wont grow alot, but even a little bit would be good for everyone.

A1 G4 @ 800 MHz????? And what's that??? For Christmas 2002????? I think I'm going to faint. Quick, someone get me some smelling salts.
TRANSLATION: Me want!!!!! *salivate* *slobber* *drool* *faint* *thud* :-D

Me Want AmigaOne G4
Hurray!
As a side note, Boing!, my dog (see avatar) was so excited by the news that she threw up. Hmmm..

Rodney,
(those who used AmigaOS and converted to BeOS).
Isn't the BeOS closer to death than the AmigaOS? Sure, parts of it are now incorporated into the PalmOS, but at least we're getting new machines and a new OS. And soon a brand-spanking new A1 G4 @ 800 MHZ. Excuse me while I faint again. *thud* :-)

I had to check my calendar to make sure it wasn't April 1st :-D
No, seriously QUALITY news !!!

What's that old saying "From the smallest of acorns, mighty oak trees grow".
With all the B$ flying around recently, this could be the first of many upbeat announcements.
There's life in the old dog yet.

:-) :-) :pint: :pint: :-) :-)
Excellent news. Especially that the SE and XE models (G3 @ 600Mhz & G4 @ 800Mhz, respectively) will be available for simultaneous release.
OS4 for AmigaOne by early 2003, was about what I realistically expected, but I hope the Cyberstorm version will be ready sooner, so we can find out what its like.
-
@AmiNTT
As long as your dog doesn't throw up over your A1 when you get it ! :-P
-
AmiNTT,
As a side note, Boing!, my dog (see avatar) was so excited by the news that she threw up. Hmmm..
Are you sure it wasn't at Rodney's mention of BeOS? It does have a barfing sound to it. :-) Hoody-Hoo! A1 G4 @ 800MHz!!! I think I'm going to faint again. *thud*

Really is good news, what would make it just perfect is that OS4 was finished to..ah well
Good job Eyetech
I will get smashed tonight in celebration :pint: :pint: :pint:

With this system one can really start building future AmigaOS machine(via UAE on PPC Linux on the A1). And developing OS4 apps with the GCC crosscompiler for OS4...

I'm off to one of those dodgy hospitals to sell one of my kidneys.
I've already done that, to both my kidneys. I now use rubber tubing, a sainsbury's bag and a coffee filter instead.
Well done Eyetech/Hyperion/everybody, i believe some people may be eating their own words for lunch.
See you at WOASE!!
Graham C - V.Happy :-D :-D :-D :-D

Just Imagine this G4 800 badboy with a Radeon 9700 cranking out Quake II. This aint your father's Amiga:-D
Also as someone else mentioned, it would be nice for gfx packages like Imagine to get Altivec extensions!!
-
Good news. But i will wait until OS4 is ready. From the day that OS4 is ready, i'm off to buy the XE version.
Keeping fingers crossed...
-
Aaaaaaarrrghh! I was going to get a SharkPPC... but now i'm sooo tempted to get a personal loan and put together an AmigaONE system....
oooooh don't tempt me so! :-D
Either way, I think i'll wait until OS4 is actually available...

Well, thats my point. BeOS is dead, the platform is getting old (mind you, the OS is far more advanced than Amiga and still more advanced in certain areas compared to Windows and MacOSX[from what i've heard]). The system is very usable, but as time goes on, is unable to run on some hardware.
AmigaOS and A1 coudl mean a new platform for these people. However, OpenBeOS could also be the savour. But, i wonder if they'll manage to get the big corps to port their software? Open Source projects dont have a lot of luck with that. So a commercial alternative might be a good bet.
AmigaOS is in a good position to steal a few.
BeOS has been refered quite often as AmigaOS's brother/son/daughter - relation or something like that. So many people see a link, and may very well look at AmigaOS before anything else.

@Tickly:
Haarggh.
Is that a self portrait ?
PS: does anyone know whats in them thar bundles on the Eyetech site ?
I tried clicking the info icon, but they int done that bit yet !
PPS:
everyone (still) in my office looked at me funny
when I did exclaim 'shit'ot !' rather too loudly ! :-D

Is that a self portrait ?
Well, its a south park version of me that is accurate in that I have short hair, a goatee, and wear clothing that gives me away as a fan of "metal" :-)
Not too sure if the gormless expression is accurate, but then I can't see my face all the time :-D

This is great news. :-D

If I ever get my machine running. I am gonna set it next to my best friend's PeeCee and see which is powerful. :-D

Everyone here must try and get this submitted onto slashdot....if we get the linux PPC people to see there are "cheap" boards available it could push a good amount of orders eyetechs way..... give them as much monetary support as possible....the more orders they get the cheaper these boards will become!
I've submitted twice, one very amiga geared the other very linux geared..... the more they see coming in, the more likely it'll be posted.
Go and promote the amiga! :D
CnlPepper - Clinically insane since 1904....

Gee, dude. Don't take up a loan to buy a computer. Bad things happen that way. Much better to work the streets dressed in a nice leather outfit ;-)
-
Excuse me if I`am wrong. This mean that......
Sorry how long was I unconscious?
Anyway where was I? Oh yes. This is good news of the highest calibre. I NEED MONEY!! My
603e240+040/25 now looks silly and so does my BVision. Oh I can`t wait to get one of those!
PS WAHOO!!

Whoever posted this news would be correct if by "released" he meant "not released".
Please people, READ the press release instead of the misinformed clifnotes. There's nothing here to cheer for unless you love LinuxPPC.
They also make it sound like early adopters are getting a discount, but I see no evidence of this. Are thy saying the prices will be higher when AmigaOS4 is actually available and bundled? Well apparently not because I read the whole press release and it's not there. *sniff* *sniff* do you smell that?
-
@Nick:
Excuse me if I`am wrong. This mean that......
What it _means_, is that the "fabled" XE that wouldn't "be released this year" actually is shipping before christmas. Some people are bound to be eating a lot of rather large camels over that one. Of course, I _did_ tell you so. :-D
And to mr ignorant there (aka strobe):
"So, in return, we are offering all users who wish to take up this 'Earlybird' offer a free, registered, copy of OS4 for the AmigaOne as soon as it becomes available. The Earlybird 'free OS4' offer represents a saving of around 12% on an AmigaOneG3-SE mo otherboard"
So, does it say what you gain by buying immediately, or doesn't it? I would say it does. And yes, it does say when the stuff will be delivered, it says before christmas 2002. Learn to read, strobe. I think there's some rather good educational software for 5 year olds available for Mac.
-
Im going all the way- everything below my neck is now for sale or trade (amigaone XE of course). I will design an interface between my head and the computer.
gimme gimme gimme!
p.s.: Anyone want to sponsor me an XE board so I can write SCSI drivers for all adaptec PCI cards ?
I'm a developer with no machine!!!!!!
-
>What it _means_, is that the "fabled" XE that
>wouldn't "be released this year" actually is
>shipping before christmas
Sorry, please learn to read:
"A 700MHz G3 (750FX cpu) version of the AmigaOne-
XE will be made available - at reduced cost - early in
2003."
-
Again people, READ the press release!
It doesn't make any specific dates for release. The only mention of the "December" date only relates to the pre-order offer, not any "release" of actual hardware!
Good grief, any non-negative press release gets you people gushing with overexuberance. Maybe I should just copy the press release and paste it here!
-
@strobe
Perhaps you should take some of your own advice and READ the press release!
The upshot is that we are taking orders for both the 600MHz G3-based AmigaOneG3-SE, and the 800MHz G4-based AmigaOne-XE, starting at the WoA-SE show on 2nd November 2002 - for delivery before Christmas (and, yes, for the cynics out there, we really do mean Christmas 2002!)
Blitter

Sorry zackman, this is what it says in the release:
The upshot is that we are taking orders for both the 600MHz G3-based AmigaOneG3-SE, and the 800MHz G4-based AmigaOne-XE, starting at the WoA-SE show on 2nd November 2002 - for delivery before Christmas (and, yes, for the cynics out there, we really do mean Christmas 2002!). A 700MHz G3 (750FX cpu) version of the AmigaOne-XE will be made available - at reduced cost - early in 2003.
This means that the 600MHz G3 and the 800MHz G4 will be delivered before christmas, and the 700MHz G3 in early 2003. The G4 *is* the -XE version. If you're going to accuse someone of not being able to read, make sure you're not guilty of that too!
-
WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!
:-D
-
> Whoever posted this news would be correct if by "released" he meant "not released".
I can order it, and it will be delivered within a couple of months. That's "released", as far as I'm concerned.
> Please people, READ the press release instead of the misinformed clifnotes. There's nothing here to cheer for unless you love LinuxPPC.
Hmm...I'm assuming it's a lot like LinuxX86? Anyway, OS4 IS coming for this hardware, hopefully within a few months. No harm in getting the hardware in advance.
> They also make it sound like early adopters are getting a discount, but I see no evidence of this. Are thy saying the prices will
> be higher when AmigaOS4 is actually available and bundled? Well apparently not because I read the whole press release and it's not
> there. *sniff* *sniff* do you smell that?
The discount is that you get AOS4 for free. Later you will have to pay the price of AOS4 (or go without it).

Well I have OS4 already so I won't have to torture myself learning Linux - mind you I should really learn it so I can take advantage of the apparent ease of Linux to Amiga Porting (when compared with win32 to amiga porting).
I can afford the G3-SE model, but if someone sponsor me I could have G4 and therefore my software can have altivec extensions!
-
"The upshot is that we are taking orders ..[clip].. at the WoA-SE show on 2nd November 2002 - for delivery before Christmas (and, yes, for the cynics out there, we really do mean Christmas 2002!). "
Hmm as I read that I realized I've become a cynic
When did that happen :-?
Oh well I don't have that kind of money to burn anyways
-
It looks like I will be getting an AmigaOne XE with a 800 Mhz G4 CPU, together with the new Catweasel and maybe some additional software.
It looks like Santa has to be a little more generous than usual this year. :-D
