Title: Payback Price Reduction
Post by: System on October 24, 2002, 09:28:31 AM
Apex Designs have cut the price of the Amiga version of Payback to 24.95 GBP just in time for Christmas. The game can be bought from their on-line shop here (http://www.apex-designs.net/shop/). For those of you who have already bought the game, there are also a couple of new/updated maps available on their Extra Maps Page (http://www.apex-designs.net/payback_maps.html).

If you haven't bought this game yet, DO IT NOW! (and don't give me any of that "but i don't really play games..." rubbish, this is a must have  :-D )

Not if you find that sort of game boring. I gave up playing cops'n'robbers (RL 1st person shooters) by the time I was 8. Now, Civ II (Age of Empires is glitzy graphics trying to excuse horrendously limited content) or a Baldur's Gate type of adventure, those are what I'd call "must-haves"
 :-D

PS if you do like FPS games, this is, indeed, a must-have

Nahh.. I hate simulation games. If I want the grey matter exercised, I do programming.. much more interesting. I play games when I want to veg out  :-D

Idem. But apparently females prefer games where you create something, whereas males tend to prefer mayhem. Also, it would appear that we tend to multitask better, which is why we can remember so many things you've done wrong while simultaneously making the tea, keeping an eye on the kids and listening to the news on the radio  ;-) So strategy games are fine.

(Anyway, when I want mayhem there's always the dojo)

Civ2 is great, but compared to Alpha Centauri, it's very limited. You're right about AOE,
though. Never understood what the big deal was about that one. The game had absolutely NO
depth at all.

As for Payback, I was originally planning to wait until I got an Amiga capable of running
it in smoothly in 3d mode, but with this price cut, I think I might order it today instead.:-)

I love RPGs! The Balders Gate series, Icewind Dale series and Neverwinter Nights are just THE best games ever! (IMO of course ;-))

There are times when I just want to run arond and shoot things, ie Doom, Quake etc. But nothing keeps me comming back like BG, IWD and NWN. They have depth, great graphics, good story lines and some fantasy thrown in (oh and the occasional mindless violence) what more could you ask for?!

Not only that, but they look a damn sight nicer too. Yep, hooray for women  :-D

I would buy it. But unfortunately I don't have an Amiga to run it on at the moment.

But perhaps that isn't a good enough excuse either.  :-D

Are any of the other ports out yet?

I don't think my 266mhz PC could cope with it under UAE ;-)

Payback is not a FPS, not by a long shot.

One thing is certain:

I'm not playing with Rose any time :-)

I just ordered a copy of Payback. Satisfied? ;-)

Since I've just reactivated the A4k that sat here unused eversince
I bought it 3rd-hand this spring I might just try the demo and if
I like it.

But I'm more in a waiting mode for my copy of ToT which should be
here early next week. That sounds like a hell of a cool game.

Uhm, what does "bought it 3rd hand" mean. Second hand means indirectly, are you talking about something like adress register indirect with index register and displacement (http://www.osdata.com/topic/language/asm/address.htm#addressregisterindirectwithindexregisteranddisplacement) ?

WOW! Why don't you write down some top tips and upload to amiga.org! (Please!)

I'm off for a game of Civ1 on Amiga.

Then I'll buy Payback even though my A4k isn't up to running it. Will it run under WinUAE?

Hmm, I noticed someone from outside Norway has billed my card 18 UKP. Odd that. I have only ever used the card twice as a VISA. Once through Eyetech, where the card details was handled over  fax, and just now.  "Just now" of course refers to me buying Payback, but the price was 25UKP plus p&p, right? *ponder*

Edit:

_including_ p&p, silly me.

I believe so. WinUAE-JIT should be able to handle Payback with sound on a fairly new machine. But I'm not guaranteeing anything, since I don't use Windows ;-)

@olegil

Visa requires also some conformation by fax rigth? Like you had with Eyetech. Because of some recent fraud I believe.

Well, they require that the billing address and the shipping address are the same.

We're really talking small amounts here, compared to buying a complete motherboard from Eyetech ;-)

But I don't like that _part_ of what I expected has been charged to my account already...

@Red
And I thought I would have allready posted the specs (and price) of that
machine to an annoying level ....

Ok again:
A4K-D in RBM-tower with:
CS-MK-060 and 64mb
Prelude_Z2
Ariadne
MultiFaceCard_3 (not installed atm)
Cybervision_64
4GB SCSI
1xCD-R
2xCD-ROM (only 1 installed)
Plus from my old A2000:
Picasso_2, DeInterLace and an external ZIP

The package also include a huge amount of SW and the a NEC-3D (15-31khz)
plus the following parts allready sold:
ISDN-Master
VLAB_Y/C
2nd 4GB-SCSI
SCSI-scanner

@olegil
No it just means that the previous owner didn't have the orginal case
or CPU-board as he had also bought the machine 2nd-hand.

Back to topic:
Just tried the demo, and all I can say is that the controls are odd ??

And how am I supposed to use AHI ? (the Paula-sond is pretty
much defunc on this particular A4000).

Or is it a full-version-only feature ? But the controls are there  :-?

What are you controlling it with? I found it pretty straightforward with a CD32 pad. You can edit it in the full game anyway (can't remember if you can in the demo).

It doesn't have AHI support AFAIK, but you could try NullePuh(?) or PuhDeBehr(?) (why do those patches have such stupid names) they *might* work...

@Tickly

"Odd" refers to the gernal kind of control that make the guy run
down if you press "up" while he is facing downwards ...

BtW: Competition Pro Mini or DEATH !!! :-D

It has controls that let you choose the audio-device, but
putting "ahi.device" and "0" as unit only resulted in a
recoverable alert.

Relative controls are really the best way to go for any game which involves controlling vehicles. If you're not used to it, it might feel a little bit odd, but believe me, one does get used to it.

it *IS* a great game. it can be darned frustrating, espically in the early days when you dont have much to do except build your town up a bit (Research!!!) but once you get into the game you cant wait to get home to do a turn and are frustrated as hell if its not there for some reason!! ;)

For those of you who dont know TOT goto www.tamar.net . click the Snake in Tales to get to the section with downloadable demos on (or goto aminet).

And for those of you comming to WOASE next weekend come say hi to me on the Mediator stand and I'll give you a walk-through of TOT.

And for those of you subbed to Total Amiga my full review and hints is in there! (pick a copy up at the show also :-)

See you on the 2nd folks!!!!

I bought it last year right after release and was disappointed by the speed even with the latest update, the game is not smooth (and fast) in 640*480 on a BPPC240/060+BVPPC (remember quake clickboom version ?)

If you mean Payback, if you have a graphics card Payback is amazingly smooth and fast and beautiful using the freely available Warp3D and Warpup executables. In fact, the WarpUp one alone should get you great speed even on a very old graphics system like AGA.
