If anyone is still reading this thread, I sent the inoperative quaddoubler back to sonnet. I got it back last week, put it in, and lo and behold: 68040/55! Quite fast. Very nice!

Wow! Nice :-o
Check out the Sonnet Cresendo, which is a PPC on a PCI card. I'm under the impression that it and the SharkPPC might be the same thing!

i have no idea what you mean, but you forgot to include a title for thread.
there should be something in the software to prevent a thread being uploaded without a title.
you should get a message reminding the writer to put in the title, or something.
:-o

What did you put it in? Always had wanted one for the 3000's.

Just a reminder. When you start a topic, please name your post otherwise the topic will have no name making it hard to get to.
This public service announcement brought to you by the letter 'A' and the number '1'.

That's a common misconception of the Sonnet Cresendo. The PCI label only means it works in the original PCI based Macs. It uses the Processor slot, which is not PCI. It's a dedicated slot similiar to the way that A3/4k's have processor slots. But it is a nice card. I've got the NewerTech G3 version in my Mac 8500.

Cool! I've been contemplating one of these for a while. Couple of questions for you.
Which model QuadDoubler did you get?
Which accellerator do you have it on?
How did you end up with 55MHz?

The Crescendo/7200 G3 plugs into a PCI slot.

Can we see some benchmarks from SysInfo or
SysSpeed pleeeease? :)
-
So is it an 55MHz 040 overclocked from 40, 33, or 25 MHz?
-
Hello all.
I unsoldered the '040 on my BlizzardPPC, soldered in a socket, and put in a QuadDoubler. It's the 'B' version. According to Sysinfo, it's running at 57.10 MHZ.
Benchmarks -
Sysinfo:
Dhrystones - 36154
Mips - 37.73
MFlops - 9.58
SysSpeed:
Mips - 36.15
MFlops - 13.72
It's about twice as fast as an '040 4000. Fusion 3.2 is almost usable with it.
Just for fun, here are the numbers from SysSpeed for my 240MHZ 603e:
Mips - 295.14
MFlops - 182.77
-
I'm guessing that the card was a 28Mhz 040 one then?
Sounds nice, I wouldn't mind one for my Quadra but they cost a bit.
-
sweet , anyone tried this with 060's ?
please report! and whats the price?
-
The '040 I replaced was a 25mhz version. I don't really know why it's running at 57mhz. They cost about 99USD, 59.33GBP, or 84.73 euros.
I have one on a 3640 in my 3000 also. It works well.
-
Uhm...pardon my ignorance....but WTF is it? A super OC'd 040 board?
-

You're thinking about placing a 060 on the sonnet card? I haven't heard of a 100MHz 060. Also the voltage is wrong.
Or are you suggesting you'd take out the faster 060 and replace it with this slow 040 card? (voltage would be wrong in this case, too)

@odin
Google is your friend (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/quaddoubler.html)
-
here's the link (http://www.sonnettech.com/product/quaddoubler.html)
edit: ahh, beat me to it!
but what I want to know is, what's the point if it costs 100USD? cos you could get a secondhand 060 card, or indeed an 040 for not much more!
-
@piru/cyberus:
Google is my friend but I'm lazy ;P.
Ta for the links :-).
Hm 50MHz eh, are they overclocked 040's?
-
@Cyberus
Well, in my case, the point is that I already had the BPPC and the 060 mod is a lot more than I wanted to try with a rare board. This was reasonably safe and gave me 2X the speed.
@odin
They probably are overclocked, the highest clock speed I can find on the Motorola site for an 040 is 40mhz.
-
@ Xand
Oh I see! Yeah, I don't blame you for not wanting to destroy the card!
Am I right in thinking that there are less compatibility issues with an 040 as well?
-
@Xand
Thanks for the benchmarks, indeed a nice upgrade.
-
@Cyberus
I haven't had any compatibility problems yet.
@-D-
No problem.
-
I put a Quaddoubler 50/100 B into a 3640/68040/25 board in my A3000 motherboard which is in a Mirage/Mediator tower. I don't know which chip they used because I can't see it. It is covered by a nice little blower/cooler. Sysinfo rates it at 55MHz. I believe that it would have to be overclocked because the fastest 68040 is 40MHz.
If you can get one from Sonnet, I think that you'll be pleased with the results.

does the quaddoubler go in place of the processor on the board?

Yes... Just unseat the CPU, plug in the QD and go!
