Amiga has released new screenshots (http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4AmiDock.php) from AmigaDock for AmigaOS 4 (http://os.amiga.com/os4/).
AmiDock is a completely redesigned version of OS3.9's AmiDock, with lots of improvements in terms of usability, loading-speed and optical feedback.
Included here (http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4AmiDock.php) are a few screenshots to give us a general idea of what to be expected from AmiDock...
-
Thanks to the individual who created the cool new AmigaOS 4.0 design. I forgot your name, but you know who you are! :-D
-
When will they lose that hideous gray interface? Can't they change it at least for screenshots? I swear, if OS 4 looks like that, I'm gonna be pissed.
-
It`s a same that the first screenshots of AmigaOS 4.0 weren`t like that. We lost an opportunity to show the world that we still exist. (I mean that we lost, because it had many visitors then and those pictures were for laughing, especially for those that had no idea what AmgiaOS is)
I hope that AmigaOS 4 will be ready soon. :-)

@ Dagon
I agree.

Well, AmigaOS/Workbench has never been pretty right out of the box. Most of us have excused this either with the responsiveness of the OS, or the ability to apply custom hacks and patches. Unfortunately, the rest of the world doesn't think that way, so an ugly GUI turns 'other' potential users away.
Perhaps it might be a good idea to get Mason working on the GUI department for OS4. He is a great talent and could really make the GUI give a much needed boost.

I really like the look of the new dock, and I'm itching to play with it, but... "dockies"? I don't know about the rest of you, but that word just brings to mind small yellow feathery things waddling about going "quack!" ;-)
How about "subdocks", or "minidocks", or even "paradocks" :-o ?
-
I was noticing some of the software icons that were there. The pagestream dude was there, as well as some other know titles. Does that mean we will have this software available? Of course with petunia but I'm talking about then new 64bit stuff?
I really like the dock idea hope we can apply our own texture to the borders etc.

Dockers...hmm...
-
No, yer all wrong. "Dockies" are like groupies, but for longshoremen. :-)

The way I read it, "dockies" are much cooler than just
subdocks. "Dockies" are custom render hooks.
Hey, "Custom Render Hooks". That's catchy.
So for example you could have a dock item that is the
visualization window for your mp3 player, or have
a dock item that displays the contents of other virtual
screens, or shows you what is coming through your
TV card right now or ...
Anyway, that was my take on it. Check out the "lens"
item in the dock on the screenshots.
-
The Dock sounds great on an uncluttered screen but how does it behave when an app or two is open. I mean what navigation tools does it have?
Will it get in the way like Apples Dock or Windows Start bar?
A lot of these ideas seem to forget that people actually use computers to work on.

Well, it's not that - as I said, it all seems pretty cool (it seems to be the abstractions behind the Windows taskbar and active desktop rolled into a rather more elegant concept), it's the *name* that I have a problem with. OK, maybe "problem" is too harsh a word, but Dockies just sounds, well... harmless :-P

Eeeehh... 64bit? I think you're refering to AmigaOS5 which is *way* into the future. This is AmigaOS4 which is basicly AmigaOS3.9 on PPC with a few new features and improved functionality. All classic Amiga software will work as long as it is retargable meaning that it doesn't depend on the classic Amiga hardware chipset.

Yes, I must admit that the first screenshots weren't so impressive. But the next ones, especially this one - http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4GUIPre.php?d=Screen3_P2.png - isn't so bad at all! Thank heavens they finally understood to do something about the ugliness of Reaction! It's now starting to look quite ok! :-D The thing that bothers me the most in this screenshot (and in the others as well) is the window borders. Especially those close, size, minimize/maximize and scroll gadgets need a serious overhaul!

Your right there. People that do not know much about AmigaOS will regard those pictures (the first ones) as a good laugh. But also, these days people care more about a stable and good working OS then a OS that has a GUI that looks so nice but does run like crap.

 If you could open two of them, you would have a "pair o' docks"...
-
I think the latest ones show AmiDock running on a 3.9 machine... hence no pretty OS4.0 intuition.ibrary...
(edit: actually, forget that, I've just taken another look at the screenshots and that does in fact appear to be OS4 Intuition - just in a very plain configuration)

Thast was one thing that put me off the original concept of AmiDock... but check out the minimizer dockie (http://os.amiga.com/os4/OS4AmiDock.php?d=AmiDock3_sm.png)!

The new Amidock screenshots are also mentioned on the BeOS resource site Bebits (http://www.bebits.com/).

Where?

New Screenshots from AmigaOS 4 ... :-D
As long as the system is stable, I can tinker with preferences, colours, backgrounds, etc. to personalize the look of my Workbench.

Ive never noticed that AmigaOS's Icons had that shade (background colour) behind the titles. Is this a configuration option? I've always liked how it wasnt there, i hope the ability to have them not displayed is kept.
Nice shots, i didnt mind the colours that much. Remeber also, that OS4 wont look its prettiest till round 4.2 when skinning should be finished :).

(Bebits mention)
Hmmmm... well there was a link earlier under "Headlines". It's definitely not there now! It was only a link to the OSNews article, but I thought it was nice to see a mention. Obviously someone else thought otherwise...
-
ok :-)

Stefan Robl is an amazing programmer! Anyway, it sounds as if he's managing to incorporate some of the bells and whistles found in the Mac OS X Dock.

;-) AmigaOS has had the ability to show a background behind the icon text since version 2.0. You could select the color for it with the font preference tool....

"Paradocks" lol I like it!
MorphOS :-D
ps. if you have to use Windows XP and you like the MacOSX Dock, download stardock its great!
