Title: Dell unhooks Windows from desktops
Post by: CyberViking2000 on August 21, 2002, 01:49:10 AM
Next month, Dell Computers will make Windows optional for some of its business desktops by introducing the n-Series corporate desktops and workstations that ship without Microsoft's Windows, or any other operating system pre-installed.

Read more about it here. (http://techupdate.zdnet.com/techupdate/stories/main/0,14179,2877309,00.html)

While this development has some significance, it should not be blown out of proportion. In very many cases, corporations would re-image the machines delivered by Dell anyway, so that they all contain software specific to that corporation or even department.

In those cases, the effect will be on licensing rather than on which operating system eventually ends up on the PCs.

It reminds me of the early days of the computer industry when you bought the computer and the OS seperate so you could have what you wanted.  Anyone else remember the days when you could order your PC with DOS, Windows, or OS/2 as your OS?
