At the Nova Design booth at AmiWest this weekend Kermit Woodall will premiere his latest project:
The retrosystem Amiga 1000 Project!
In a nutshell this project marries a classic Amiga 1000 case with ultra-small x86 based hardware. The Amiga 1000 case was restored and highly specialized components were used to stuff a full x86 based system inside. A complete power supply, 30gb hard drive, cdrom, floppy drive, motherboard and more!
This system is Amithlon compatible, Windows compatible, QNX compatible and Linux compatible. It includes TV-out like the classic Amiga and also offers S-Video, Firewire/DV ports, and much more.
You can see this system at www.retrosystem.com as well as a preview of the other models that will be coming in a few weeks!

Hehe weird, this is the exact oposite of the project I've been meaning to do for years, an A1000 in a modern ATX tower with gfx card, sound card, 040(or 060) etc:-P
-
Neet, too bad the Original A1000 wasn't crammed in there too .. I thought it was for a bit.
Never the less desktops are cool .. they save so much space! (When you put your monitor on top)
/me still trying to cram PC + disks and printer on the same desk two amigas each with a monitor and all software used to fit
-
I would run Amithlon on it :-)
But neet...
A bit to expensive, but this gives me some ideas of what to do with my old A1000 :-)
-
This box must be noisy, need 2 fans?
the original 1000 had no fan,(I think) the good
quiet old days of the 80's. :-)
-
IIRC the A1000 had a fan in the powersupply..

Yes it does, but it's quiet.

Cool idea!
I wonder where the DVD drive goes on the systems. I would imagine that it goes under the cartridge flap on the NES, but on the Atari it must be a problem.

Bet they can't squeeze a full PC into a ZX-81 or an original spectrum! :-)

I think it took a few days to figure out that inserting
a floppy would shut up the drive :-D

What a waste of an a 1000 these machines are colectors items.these machines are expensive pc,s too .I would love an a1000 and a 3000/4000 tower the only machine which is colectable i own is my cdtv. :-? :-? :-? :-)
-
An Original A1000 would be of more worth..
Like filling a can of beer with lemonade :)
-
Those boards look almost small enough to fit in a 3.5 drive bay.
That would be some idea for an Amithlon kit that you could fit into
and network with your existing Classic system.
Might be a bit messy round the front though.
-
Think they could squeeze an A1 motherborad in to an Amiga 1000 case?
-
Hi
Perhaps they use Advantech Biscuit PC board or similar boards from other vendors:
Biscuit PCs (http://www.advantech.com.tw/products/product_list.asp?category_name=Biscuit%20SBCs)
Unfortunately Transmeta have "no competition" agreement with IBM, therefore they don't offer PowerPC code morphing. If they sell it perhaps it is possible to use Transmeta + Biscuit PC + A1000 for running Amiga OS 4!
-
That wasn't enough - we put a massive 20gb hard drive inside to store your software and an ultra-slim CD drive inside to load your programs or play your music! You'll also find this Amiga has built-in stereo sound output as well.
Man, to take apart an origional machine - why not make replica cases - and engineer the insides so thatyou can fit in a cheaper beefier machine? Still an A1 in a modrn interpretation of the A1000 case could be pretty cool :-)
-
Now that's an interesting concept.
-
what would have been better with the nes is to leave the rom connector in and attach a dumper to it for the emu + wire up its pad ports ..... I can remember a megadrive pc a bit like this , just not inside a megadrive case :)
-- WTF is stopping APUS booting :(((

Doesn't that just make it into a very expensive NES? :-P With less compatibility? :-P

WHAT? A standard x86 motherboard in an A1000 case? :-o THIS IS SACRELIGE! Jay Minor is spinning in his grave! :-x
Gaah! Its like pissing up the wall of a holy temple!
Know what I'd rather have? An A1000 in an A1000 case!
-

Oh lighten up! Very few people truly care about the A1000 anymore!(With the exception of me of course).
Know what I'd rather have? An A1000 in an A1000 case!
But let me guess, you don't own any A1000s right? The interest in A1000s is almost gone. Look on ebay, even crap Amigas like the A600 sell for more than an A1000. I even tried to give a few spare A1000s away for free once, I had no takers. I'd bet most A1000s are hitting the landfill these days :-x Me personally, I have 2 A1000s. If you really love the A1000, BUY ONE and preserve it. I'd bet they become pretty rare in 10 years time.
-
Oh lighten up!
No. Why should I?
But let me guess, you don't own any A1000s right?
Not at the moment, but i'm skint. I do own all this (http://www.old-computers.com/club/collectors/ordis.asp?c=232) though.
The interest in A1000s is almost gone.
So? The interest in many old machines is "almost gone" as you say, but I still think its an awful thing to do to an A1000. Would you think it right to take the Mona Lisa, and airbrush a more modern girl onto it? Would you take a classic car, like an original E type Jag, and rip out the interior to put in the seats and dashboard from ford escort?!
-
No. Why should I?
Because using the case for something productive is better than throwing it in the garbage.
but I still think its an awful thing to do to an A1000
How do you know the A1k was even still functional?
Would you think it right to take the Mona Lisa, and airbrush a more modern girl onto it?
That's a silly analogy, there is only 1 mona lisa and it is priceless. There are tens of thousands of A1000s out there, most of them quickly making their way to a landfill :-x
Would you take a classic car, like an original E type Jag, and rip out the interior to put in the seats and dashboard from ford escort?!
No, but I'd take a 67 VW Beetle, rip out the 1.3 liter engine and cram in a 911 6 cylinder turbo engine:-D
-
Yes well, I don't agree with you at all, so lets just leave it at that.

I too would rather see them use lookalike cases rather than seperate Amiga internals from their rightful shells. You have the case, so creation of a mold from it should make things a LOT cheaper.
I hope somebody is saving all these functional and non-functional A1000 boards. Someday there will be very few left. And that's a crime against history.
I for one would take an A1000 home anyday.
BTW I do wish the new "Amiga" moboards would fit into the A1000 case. Better still, the a600 or A1200.
