Title: Microsoft stakes IP claims on OpenGL
Post by: GadgetMaster on July 11, 2002, 05:15:36 AM
Microsoft has staked an IP claim on portions of the OpenGL spec, and it's willing to license it's patents on RAND terms.

Is this the beginning of the end of the M$ empire?

I mean they must have peaked by now and every power comes to an inevitable decline.

Why do I say this? well they seem to be clutching at straws, spreading themselves too thin. trying to conquer too many different markets too fast, consoles phones, toys, peripherals, media etc. Also this latest attempt makes them look a bit desperate.

I know It may be a bit bit of a premature prediction but even if they are around in five years time, I bet they will be a different (read smaller) company.

When the time does eventually come I wonder who will fill the void. I just hope that it is a company with better business practices than M$.

And (just in case anyone is wondering) NO, I dont really see the Amiga platform, in any shape or form to be the successor. Prove me wrong though, and I would be pleasantly surprised.

One can only hope that Innovative technology in the hands of a competent and decent company wins in the end.

I ask for too much sometimes :-P

And the human genealogy is next..

M$ decline started when they got scared by Linux. The non-success of the X-Box just confirms it. Eventually stockholders will see a pattern they don't like, figures that won't match up and that will be the end of it.

The console market is where hordes of pirhanas lurk, M$ was a shark that took a wrong turn.

@createcoms: You have to accept things like that if you keep on promoting M$ by giving them money. You vote for this behavior by buying M$ products. There's really just one thing to blame here; consumers of M$ products.

Besides, keep spontaineus outbursts of rage for yourself (no offence). I know I posted something similar myself back in the stoneage (nuke Redmond), but I wouldn't do it again today. I really don't blame you. The point is that rage is a substitute for real arguments. Sit down, think and find the real arguments and people won't dismiss you as a raging nutcase. That the power of slow communication; you actually have the time to find the killer argument.

The giant crushed another hundred developers, and there were no goliath in sight.

Well, bearing in mind M$ have just had their fingers rapped in a nice sort of way by a spineless SEC for the misdemeanour of profit-smoothing (which is achieved by understating revenues in one period and carrying them over to another to hide poor performance), maybe people will start to have doubts. I do. What else have they done that they haven't admitted to?

After all, the only way to make money out of MS shares is by capital gain, since MS has never paid a dividend. Ever. And now the stockmarkets, and especially the NASDAQ, are currently wallowing in the mire...

I don't buy MS Products.  I am a Pure Amigan, owning only amiga systems.
I will NEVER buy MS products.

I fail to see another way to destroy microsoft apart from blowing them up...........

@createcoms: Ok. I'm not a 1oo% purist myself. I use my Amiga for everything except gaming (well, sometimes). Then it's either x86 or PS1 (soon PS2). I'm having serius thoughts about buying Amithlon; it's cheap and would keep me busy until the A1 arrives.

See the light and salvation:
C:SetPatch QUIET SKIPROMUPDATES=exec.library

An exec written in sluggish C? No way! Performance increase: about x4.

@teapot: A spineless SEC? SEC can't do anything but but talk. For real. They have no authority whatsovever. It's only an advisory. Harsh language is their only weapon. It seems like the only time they can (indirectly) fine a company is when they commit an outright fraud. Immoral and illegal conduct they can do little (if anything) about. Stuff like that is up to the (real) justice system. Whenever they discover something illegal they have to politely ask a judge to do something about it.

Removed incredible stupid comment. If you read it I appologise. Sorry. I'll blame it on the summer heat.

People,

Stop this Microsoft paranoia. Microsoft is just telling upfront that they think they have IP related to OpenGL. Now it is the task forces to see how this can be worked out. This is a normal procedure.
If microsoft would have played it dirty they would have kept silent and squashed afterwards everybody who was using their IP.

Fats.

PS: I also prefer other OSes to microsoft but this doesn't mean I need to be Microsoft paranoia.

It's definitely war, but then it's been war for roughly 10 years now.  I compare fighting Microsoft to the US government's policy toward communism during the Cold War...you can't necessarily beat the enemy, but you can do everything in your power to contain them and slowly choke them off.  Over the past 10 years Microsoft has made its bed, and now it's learning that its actions really do have consequences, and it must sleep in it.  Their past actions, coupled with their bewildering attempts to make their already bloated, terse, and Microsoft-centric (as opposed to consumer-centric) products even more so, will eventually unseat them.  Eventually.

And I would never call for Billy's death, either.  Most (all ?) countries have laws against murder, y'know?  I'd be satisfied that if at every public appearance he makes, from now until he retires, that he gets hit in the face with another cream pie! ;-)  Sweet, sweet justice.
