Aha! They missed one: the game they showed in alpha in France last month. Of course, if we'd been allowed to give out its name it might have been more helpful.

In my opinion, that lineup sucks.

Why? Because it is headed for the same thing that caused Linux to fail as an mainstream OS/gaming platform... the game sare "old" and outdated.

They need to port some newer titles, such as UT 2003, SOF2, GTA3, ect. If they want it to survive at all.

I wouldn't say the lineup sucks, some cool stuff in it! More titles than alot of other markets. As a matter of fact we will likely see more titles on the Amiga than Linux will have.

Plus hopefully we'll also get some new titles that aren't available on any other platforms.

Original titles are what would matter to catch new users.
They forgot ProstationAudio, or it's not gonna get ported anymore? That's seems to be a great app.
Also, It's a real shame that some very good titles like Wordworth don't get developed further, give their status. I remember on Ann that there was something in the sleeve in terms of office applications, and that it wasn't OpenOfice, or am I wrong?

As a (previous) owner of Amiga 1000 I'm looking at the development of Amiga OS 4 and Amiga one and I don't see some stuff which IMHO is really important - not being ported to AOS 4.

A good example is: XFree 4.x

If XFree will be ported, then you'll have TONS of software instantly running on Amiga! Start from QT and KDE apps, GTK and GNOME stuff, Open Office (just recompile!), Multimedia players (Xine is a good example).

I know that a rootless X will not look like an Amiga OS 4 GUI, so what? you'll have the application running, and then it can be ported to fully Amiga GUI, but until then - I can start do some stuff. I'm pretty sure that other ISV will port other apps if they'll see that there's XFree..

As for 3D games - I've seen that 4front will make the Radeon 2D support, but what about 3D? you really don't want to run a 3D game in a software rendering mode - trust me on this one. Been there, done that..

Comments?

Thanks,

Err, what happened to the OTHER news item that was posted here not too long ago. It only showed one title, but it looked interesting.

Edit: Nevermind.. The link is still available.

Someone from slashdot - not flaming :-)

I like the idea of opening the floodgates to all that software.

For me the dilema is this:

I dont give a stuff about games. I want productivity tools. Killer apps. But Games are the showcase - but then people who are really into Games tend to buy consoles or ridiculously souped up PC's.... The software has to have a market - and I'm begining to wonder where it is, when there is all this confusion over hardware - pegasos, Amiga 1 etc....

Personally I dont care what the hardware is, as long as I can run OS4.

What makes you think Linux won't run on the AmigaOne?

It does. :-D

Which flavour would you like?
(of course, porting XFree wouldn't be a bad idea, but not a priority for AOS4.0)

The licences for newer titles cost a fortune.  What matters is that they port titles which are quality titles.  In my opinion Hyperion and other companies have done just that.

I agree that they have done some good titles, though some are really aging now.  And while I would love to see UT 2003, if they could at least get Unreal Tournament (this game has had amazing staying power)  I still love to play it.  Also a couple of titles like Croteams Serious Sam (1 & 2) could probably be ported more easily (cheaper) as they are not as well known, but the games are really fun.

Same here, I'd really like to see Prostation Audio ported to PPC.  It, along with ImageFX and Photogenics, certainly make a great showcase for 'home grown' Amiga apps that can hold their own against comparable Windows/Mac apps.

I know very well that the A1 board runs Linux, thats not my point..

The point is to run XFree based application ON the Amiga OS 4 - by not rebooting the machine.

xfree isn't the problem we already have xservers.

we need gtk and gtk needs posix features ....
