Title: Cross Dos
Post by: Ellis on September 25, 2003, 02:37:15 AM
I have a problem with cross dos and I can't figure out why? I recently loss my boot partition off my 4000 running 3.9 os. and I finally fixed that and installed 3.1 os.  So , I need cross dos to work;so I  move the drivers(PC0) from storage to devs dos drrivers drawer. Well, it does not work and I don't know why? It has to be something simple that I'm forgetting. Please help me with this silly problem.

Thanks      :-D

You DID REBOOT after moving these files?

To mount them without reboot you should doubleclick them, or enter in shell: 'mount /PCx'

If you'd like to see long Win95 names, archive the CrossDos somewhere and instal fat95.lha from /disk/misc from Aminet.

If you're tired of separate logical drives for different file systems install mfs21.lha from /disk/misc from Aminet.

Small, stable and effective.

Good luck

Yes, I did reboot and still does not work. What are you saying I can't read fat 95(fat 32) ? Which means anything new off the pc because of the file system I can't read it? Unless i have another program fat95? I use windows XP.

Windows XP SUCKS !!!!  I personally use Windows 98 Second Edition on my Pentium 4 PC.  It is the best Windows for home use.  Windows 2000 and NT are the best for business.  Many people, including myself, have had nothing but problems with Windows XP.     :roll:

Windows

Relevance? Could we keep this out of here.

Windows version has nothing do with the fact that CrossDOS is not working.

You can read the files, but the names will be shortened and it can be quite annoying. For example like this:

examplefile.library -> EXAMPL~1.LIB

@the topic

First, check "L:" making sure that CrossDossFileSystem (is that the correct name?) is there.  Anyway, you should see something related to "CrossDOS" in the L: assign. Next, the icon for crossdos has been known to flake out.  Try opening a shell (have a 720k pc floppy in the drive, of coarse) and typing "dir PC0:"  and see if you can't access the disk that way.

@Piru
I would like to make a motion that Piru hereby become Amiga.org's official "DoomMaster Watch"!! :lol:  Go get 'em Piru!  :roflmao::flame:

@fragment, @Ellis

Hello!!!!
I'm over here!!!!!
Does anybody read me? ;-)

You CANNOT read long names with CrossDOS, but if you go to this place on the Aminet/disk/misc/ (http://www.aminet.net/disk/misc/index.html) for example,  download and install fat95.lha archive, you would have all this annoyingness over once and forever.

If you have any problem with installation of CrossDOS, reading installation readme from it could help you to understand how does it work under Amiga.

The guy did marvelous job with this charm, and the latest upload is from: 14-09-2003. It will also install its own fat95 file system in L:, wich can be even localized to your preffered language (warning messages) during instalation process, if you want.
And will use of course mfm.device.

Despite this I really encourage you to get also mfs21.lha from the same directory, and play a little bit with it to work with fat95, in place of CrossDOS (main change is that in place of CrossDOS PCx: names fat95 author chosed MSx:. You can change it either in mfs21.lha to use MSx: instead of PCx: or modify fat95 DosDrivers names from MSx: to PCx:).

I use both for several months and I couldn't live without it any more.

Again,
Good luck

-->edit<--

Well, I really was too loud. Sorry to shout on you, Ellis  :-) It's friday and I'm overworked this week...
You CAN read DATA, but the filenames will be shortened under CrossDOS, like fragment described.

Anyay - still both archives are worth to install..  :-D

I have all these files in the correct drawers. The cross dos files is named" CrossDOSFileSystem" in L dir. I also tried to load from the shell no good.

What did you do exactly?

From shell, you should do:
mount PC0:

Also, does your Amiga have high density floppy drive? If not, you need to format the PC floppies to 720K size. Remember to tape out the 2nd hole in the HD disk before format.

Incorrect.  While it is true that the CrossDOS that comes with WB 2.1 and later does not handle LFNs, CrossDOS 7.0+ supports Windows 95 LFNs.

But, I do agree with the fat95 suggestion.  Nice piece of work.
