Title: Ben Herman's audio stream from Amiga Expo
Post by: SlimJim on March 30, 2002, 10:45:48 PM
Some interesting snippets of information could be made out on the rather poor audio stream:

- Screenshots of Amiga OS 4.0 will be published in the first part of April.

- Magic Menu and Birdie (among others) will be seamlessly integrated into the OS 4.0 interface.

- The new OS 4.0 GUI will look quite different (i.e it will not just look like a fast OS 3.9).

- Opus Magellan 2 has been licensed for OS 4.0 (details unknown).

- For the moment, the new printer system is not due to arrive until Boingbag/OS 4.1.

That is great news! Also because it has been said a lot it will be just OS3.9 but then PPC. But it will be not. :-)

The sooner we get to see those screen shots, the better. Now all bill needs to do is to demo AmigaOS 4.0 on techtv's the screen savers!

Yep he should show it on the screen savers. He did an excellent performance with AmigaAnywhere. Bill sounds a bit like John Goodman to me. Anyone thinks that too?

Some more stuff Ben said:

- The _latest_ MUI source code will be used
(there was a question about this)

- IBrowse2.3 will be quite some beast. It will be enhanced
for OS4.0. Not just some Aminet update. It will still miss
some features of Netscape/IE though. There is not time to
fix all to OS4.0. Flash is planned to be implemented. IB
will be _much_ more stable than it is now.

-The guy that did the Warp-datatypes seem to be doing the
new PPC-datatypes.

-The datatype system as a whole is to get a complete overhaul later.
There is not enough time to do that to initial release.

- An office suit (Open office if I remember correctly)
is being worked on. This is a 'high priority' for inclusion.
(although it was not clear to me if it would be shipped initially)

-The development of software -independent of company
size- is difficult to predict. But Mr.Hermans seems quite
confident of a end-user release in May.

I'll ponder some more to see if I can remember anything
else...;-)

Wow, this is great news to hear.  I sure hope so.  The
lasts I had heard was from Bill on TechTV, saying,
the release would be this coming Summer.

Man, this is sounding better all the time.  Too bad
about the printing not making it this time, but at
least they are saying a BB4.1 :-)

The guy at the show was probably going for a beer
after that interview - to celebrate it actiually
worked. He dialed up Mr. Hermans /James (in Europe) on his
celphone, linked it up to his system somehow and
both he, people at the show and ICQ:ers could ask
questions. The audio quality was quite bad, but
actually that phone line to Europe was easiest to
make out ;-) I hope they make a transcipt.It was a
fifty minutes phonecall...

Cool!

- Magic Menu and Birdie (among others) will be seamlessl integrated into the interface.

Ehm, maybe he means that they will include something LIKE birdie. Birdie is an ASM hack
for CGX SuperLayers.

- The new OS will look quite different (i.e it will not just look like a fast OS3.9)

Mmmm!

- Opus Magellan 2 has been licensed for OS4.0
(not certain about the details)

Cool but... I really HATE magellan... It's very powerful though.

I'm ALMOST certain he said they were working with
the respective authors to implement these -
specifically in 'non-hackish' way.

Nice to see screen shots will be avaliable round early aprile... Does this mean OS4betas will only be avlalibable in early april? - $#@!, it is april now :)... Ok :), ignore that!

Any information for an EX amigaian on what Magic Menu and Birdie are?

Just guessing, i guess Magic Menu is a package from MUI? And allows for a pretty menu on your desktop?

This is a preplacement for WorkBench isnt it? Or a file manager? Whats the deal.

For the moment, no new printer system, it will
arrive in Boingbag/OS4.1

This means updates will come as patches (i know what boing bag is, but) and by 4.2, 4.5,5.0 all updates will be totaly seemlesly integrated?

Birdie makes pretty borders to windows. Don't use it myself though (no gfx-card).
Magic Menu is - as you guessed - a menu enhancer with quite a lot of cool functions
(such as transparent menues etc).

> Nice to see screen shots will be avaliable round early aprile

I wrote first part of april, not early april. Actually Ben was quite
vague on this. Probably on should expect 10-15:th of april (barring usual delays).

Both.I couldn't live without it:)Makes complete sense to me as it makes Workbench
even more useable than it already is.After using it for about 1 week, you'll wonder
how you managed without it:)

Tricky to answer - strictly speaking it's a WB replacement, but works
more like an enhancement. I'm not going to waste loads of space
listing the features - there are loads, but here are a few things it
does:
-Allows you to add little toolbars with lots of file managing
functions to each drawer/volume window.
-Filetype manager - a bit like the "please select a viewer for this
type of file" thing in windows, but with an option for editing as well
(i think...)
-Customizable menus, window appearance etc.
-Proper dir lister option for windows (a bit like the View by name
option in WB done properly).
-Fully customizable toolbars/startbars etc.
-And allsorts of other stuff I'd know if I'd ever got round to buying
a copy. Everyone seems to love it. Used to get great reviews in the
amiga press (when there was one). The only criticism I ever heard was
that the default setup is crap (half the best features not activated
straight away etc) and it takes a while to get it working at its
best (but mabye that made it easier for beginners...)

Don't take any of this as gospel though.... As I say, I don't own a
copy.

Birdie is very easy to explain.  Imagine if you will that instead of picking your color for the window border you get to pick what the graphic will be.  I can't live without Birdie, VisualPrefs (a sort of gadget skinning program) and MagicMenu.  Have a look at my last screenshot I made for an example of Birdie combined with VisualPrefs (http://home.swbell.net/stronic/screengrab.jpg) (there are better examples though).  Massimo has done a great job of making VisualPrefs very stable, I just wish I didn't have to use a program like FullPalette to lock the workbench pens.  For a snap of MagicMenu, have a look at the examples on MagicMenu.de (http://www.magicmenu.de/preview.uk.html)

In a word, yes.  You could use Opus Magellan as a file manager or use it to replace the Workbench.  The idea is similar to ScalOS or p.OS where the underlying system remains completely intact with many enhancements added.  In OS3.1 you couldn't change your menus without the use of external menu enhancers, Dopus you could.  You can display a list of files in a lister like you would see in an ASL requestor.  Dopus is more than a workbench replacement or a file manager, it feals more like a complete OS with more features than the original OS.

Just the fact that DOpus was licensed makes me jump for joy... there are some features that were needed in the AmigaOS ages ago...

Thanx guys... So at the top of the AmigaOS screen, what you think it will say?

Opus, or workbench...

That is, will Opus be the default workbench, or willthe original workbench be avaliable also?

At the moment, AmigaOS is kinda sounding like a patched up quilt :}.. which depending on how its done, is good or bad. However, i beleive Hyperion will integrate these features so they are core parts of the OS.

But, maybe these features should be uninstallable if one wishes to... Confusing... :}

I just hope all this doesnt slow the system down.

And just a clairifcation, ummm, what was it... Birdie, is kinda like umm... sawfish except it only has to manage the style of the border... This includes the title as well? - Sounds good, hope its integrated well...

>That is, will Opus be the default workbench, or will the original workbench be avaliable also

Not sure.Guess we'll have to wait and see...

To be honest, you won't want to go back to the original Workbench once you've used the extra features
that Dopus allows. It has a lot of very nice additions, but you're not forced to use them all.And it's
highly configurable.

>I just hope all this doesnt slow the system down

No chance.OS3.9+Dopus+MUI+'a lot of 3rd party patches' is quick enought here(060@64mhz Voodoo3 3000)
It should be silky smooth and then some on a G3@600mhz

Birdie lets you change the colour of Workbench's window borders. You can use either images to do this or the
built-in definable gradients.Go here for an explanation :
