Reading & Bournemouth, UK 1st March 2002. A special release of the Application Development Kit (ADK) for Tao's intent(R) media platform is
being made available to the general public. Version 1.3.1 of Tao's intent(R) ADK is now available as an exclusive CD on the cover of
digital magazine, volume 1 issue 4, released today.
The ADK will help developers gain early access to the intent(R) platform prior to the release of Tao's full Software Development Kit (SDK) later
this year, and gives everyone - not just developers - a chance to experience the future of compelling multimedia content which will run on the intent platform.
intent(R) enables a new class of interactive content services across any number of devices from mobile phones to digital televisions. It is the supported software platform for the Open Contents Platform Association, a standards body with a membership of more than 60 companies including Hitachi, Sony, Kyocera, Intel, JVC, Fujitsu, Sharp, Epson, Pioneer,
Metrowerks, Sega, Bandai and Capcom.
The ADK released with digital magazine runs on Personal Computers supporting Windows and Linux (RedHat 7.2) and incorporates intent media libraries, C and C++ compilers, a PersonalJava(TM) engine and various tools.
Volume 1, issue 4 of digital goes on sale in newsagents throughout the UK today. The magazine can also be ordered direct from the publishers, Active Media Group, via the magazine's web site at
www.digitalmagazine.co.uk while stocks last.

Does this mean that AMIGA DE is finished?
Will AMIGA release DE free of charge?
-
Does this mean that AMIGA DE is finished?
Why on earth would it mean that? This is the Tao SDK, not the Amiga SDK.
-
This is very confusing. Are we to conclude that Tao's announcement basically says that they have lost faith in Amiga? From what I understand DE is intent with knobs on - and by releasing it under an Amiga name, they hoped to attract some of the best coders, and tenacious user base in the world, to the Intent platform. How many Amiga coders have adopted Intent? I hear that Amiga's SDK is incomplete - perhaps this is Tao trying to get themselves some users? I'm just a little confused as to the direction things are going, particularly in light of the recent cool announcements that Amiga have been sending out.
-
Is this the first step into TAO & AMIGA Inc destruction, similar to Star's and Be's decision to release free version of its main product?
(StarOffice & BeOS)
Even if the product is "time limited", it can be hacked into 100% free product.
-
Give it a rest will ya.
This is SDK probably 99.9% identical to the AmigaDE SDK. Those last 0.1% is the demos made by Amiga Inc. It's that simple. The only thing they release are the basic developer tools; compilers, debuggers, documentation, etc. and an enviroment to run the comiled stuff in. It's like having the classic without the WorkBench, and with an SDK. It's useless for the average joe, and can bring more apps to the platform.
Being a cynic, you'd say Tao is covering it's back. Good for them. Afterall, they sell a kernel to anyone prepared to pay for it. Anyone can put an OS ontop of it, including Amiga Inc. Tao's product is in the same gengre as Linux. Linux is also a kernel and a competitor, not an OS. All the three-letter-acronyms and weird names attached to Linux is the OS which is put ontop of Linux itself. KDE for Intent? Why not?
If Tao would go broke the next month Amiga could just use the Linux kernel while they create their own / find another similar sollution to hardware abstraction layers and JIT engine. It would take time and be troublesome, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Tao's bare existance doesn't decide Amiga Incs future.
-
I dont really see how this SDK can be hacked into a "100% free product" as its a really cut down version. Kinda like buying a scanner and receiving a "lite" version of photoshop with it - a taster more than anything.
My concern is this: Surely its Amiga inc. that should be sending out taster's. I know that DE is intended for interactivity - multimedia, PDA, set top box etc... and intent is for embedded stuff in your Car, Fridge, toaster etc... but Digital is a mag for the average joe. Why would he/she code for a fridge? If TAO stuck there SDK on a mag thats subscribed to by the embedded systems industry - that would be different, cos these guys would be coding for such devices.

The cover picture of the magazine is "too offensive" for several Moslem countries, therefore it will not be available in several countries. :(
It will be difficult to smuggle such magazine. In several countries, CD / VCD / DVD are censored by the government (Porn movies etc).
Perhaps in the future INTENT ADK can be bundled with CHIP magazine (German) and its worldwide translations:

It's a developer tool kit. It's for making programs. It ,in itself, is not an end user application, like BEOS and StarOffice.
Are there moderators yet?
I just hate the "the sky is falling" post that get posted when people panic beacuse they don't understand the full meaneing of something.
Try asking for information. Like, What is the TAO ASK? How can I get a copy of that magazine? Has anyone gotten a copy of the magazine? If so. and you has or have use the Amiga SDK, How similar are they?
-
I dont beleive the sky's falling in - I made a distinction between DE and regular intent in my last post.
I'm just wondering why Tao are doing what suposedly was Amiga's job? - especially when things finally seem to be happening, when everything seems rosy - and Amiga's going somewhere. If I say I'll do something, I consider that to be a promise, and will do my best to complete the task. I just wish to be clarified on the situation.
-
This will prolly mean the DE will get some type of upgrade.
Much like how all the linux distros get upgrades once a new kernel comes out.
Chances are the DE will be upgraded to the latest Elate and Intent libraries.
Who knows if AmigaDE and Elate code is compatible? Does Elate and Intent benifit from Amiga's contribution? Do they add Amiga stuff in there, like the DE port of Warp3D?
I suppose there would be some type of auditing before something like that is added to the Elate/intent package?
-
For god's sake READ the news before you write a doomsday comment!!!
After that READ my previus posting (and ignore the fact that I wrote SDK while meaning ADK).
Intent: Hardware abstraction layer. Meaning among other tings: write game, let others provide support for cool gfx boards.
Elate: Kernel, as in linux, is not the same as an OS. I appologise for mixing up Elate/Intent in past comments. The difference is that the OS is what the user is fiddling with, the Kernel is what the Apps are fiddling with.
SDK: Software Development Kit, allows you to write anything, even system stuff.
ADK Application Development Kit, ONLY allows you to write Apps. Probably apps meant to run using the AmigaDE player under different platforms.
AmigaDE is NOT unable to run on anything else than washingmachines and cellphones. Amiga Inc. often point out that it can ALSO run at such hardware, not only tower/desktop hw.
Besides, Amiga Inc should NOT spend their time adressing people that can't read, or can't remember what they've previusly read. So look for the answers yourselfes, don't sit on your asses complaining about not getting them. Surf to Tao's and Amiga Inc's sites and READ the information there, because it's ALL there. Are anyone of you people adults? Then start acting as such.
-
I read the answer's - I just didnt understand them. I was also a little confused about the difference between ADK and SDK.
I usually stay away from this kinda "what are amiga doing" pollitics - and I dont think Amiga have stuffed up - I just dont figure out how Tao and Amiga's relationship is working.
I know that AmigaDE is able to run on things other than cell phones. From what I have always understood (as I wrote in my post before) Intent is for the embedded stuff - running in the background (cell phone, washing machine etc) DE provides the snazzy features that will make it a worthwhile experience on the Desktop, PDA etc where you have some kinda user interactivity. So why give out there development kit on Digital - when the average joe wont be coding for a frdge?
-
Maybe I should use the FryGuy avatar instead...
After re-visiting the Tao site, I see the problem:
Technical section:
"intent® Media System"
"Elate® real-time networked embedded operating system"
Products section:
"intent®, JavaTM Technology Edition"
"intent®, Media Libraries"
"ElateRTM Deterministic Operating System"
sigh... It seems like I have to apologize for being an assh0le. Sorry.
Tao's information suck and is confusing at best. I recommend that you read the Products Section, and with some amount of fault-tolerance in mind. I think that we have to remember that Amiga Inc. probably picks and choose out the Tao portfolio and leave out what they plan to improve/add themselfes.
A common mistake when dealing with new tecnology is that people tend to classify it with existing terms. Like using the acronyme OS when talking about Linux. Today an OS is a puzzle consisting out of many pieces of modular features. Features that can be added, removed or replaced.
Tao is not going away overnight, nor is Amiga Inc. They made friends in the big buissness being members of the OCPA. Amiga Inc. f.ex. handles developer support for SHARP zaurus (status: unknown) and that means SHARP (and probably others) have an interest in Amiga Incs survival. Tao is probably even better off since they managed to convince several large handheld manufacturers (also members of the OCPA) to use Elate. It's better being small and a member of the club, than just small.

Jetracer - dont worry. It was all about confusion :-).
Sorry for posting anonymously - I was in kind of a rush - as my dam machine kept crashing. After reinstalling Windows, I eventually narrowed the problem down to some faulty Ram - I'm a stinking 128mb down now...... I used to have 512 - till a stick went faulty. Now I'm down to a lousy 256.......... :-?
-
Not only are you a complete moron who thinks he knows something about programming an OS, but you are just plain 'ignant' with respect to what exactly it entails in building an OS.
If Tao were to go under, Amiga would in fact be dead in the water. Unlike your silly ass mumbling here:
>>>
If Tao would go broke the next month Amiga could just use the Linux kernel while they create their own / find another similar sollution to hardware abstraction layers and JIT engine. It would take time and be troublesome, but it wouldn't be the end of the world. Tao's bare existance doesn't decide Amiga Incs future.

Let me guess, you're parents are actually brother and sister too.

Oh well Digital is f**ked as a decent read - well actually last issue was turgid anyway - its resorted to using bimbos on the front cover. Using sex to sell something is a sign of commercial desperation.
I was thinking about cancelling my sub to Digital after its editorial deteriorated from the technically interesting ( but directionless ) to the pure waffle.
You might as well subscribe to FHM and read the gadgets section.

Its nice to flame Jetracer eh? Well next time rethink.
If an API is recompile compatible then you effectively have platform independence ( maybe not total architectural independence ). Binary independence is an overblown concept - which is why you can create "native" tools for optimal performance.
Linux + SDL anyone?
If Amiga was to get rid of the middleman layer between it and the host operating system ( in this case Taos excellent Intent/Elate portfolio ) it would require some rework but very little - indeed less than writing their work from scratch.
Also, I recall that there are a number of now quite mature projects on Linux for autocompile from source or from opcode with a revision control strategy built on dep.
I dont think that Intent/Elate is as pivotal in the work that Amiga is doing as others seem to.
Emulation and JIT technologies will always play second fiddle to autorecompile strategies.
So, Jetracer is right - not least because he/she phrased everything in relative terms ;-)

Then move to a fascist country where people are not allowed to speak their mind. There are no comment moderators on purpose. Comments are also anonymous on purpose (because you silly bastards are too lazy to log in and there's a bug in the cookie routine). If it gets out of hand, both go away.
Like you, it bothers me to see people posting comments out of blatant stupidity and fear. IF you've noticed though, that stupidity and fear is driven by a lack of information and direction to the community from Amiga Inc than anything else. That being said, just understand that everyone has an opinion and it might not match yours. That's what comments and forums ARE FOR.
We are starting to get some volunteers for the forums which are much more level-headed. We need more though.

> If Tao were to go under, Amiga would in fact be dead in the water.
And why is that? Amiga Inc could even resort to .net if things got real bad and they desperately needed a substitute. The point is that the hardware abstraction layer of modern OS'es (that excludes Win) is so powerfull that you could potentially switch kernel with a relatively small effort. Not entirely unlike making a Linux distribution for a previsuly unsupported platform. I think you're stuck in the "good-old-days". Wake up, it's not 1985 anymore. OS'es doesn't work like classic AOS or Win anymore.
And look everybody: some of us can take critisism. Go hack a PHP-nuke driven newsite instead of blaming me for the OS'es evolution.
Thanks for the support from varius people (allthough I was kinda rude). And I agree with Wayne, he shouldn't act as AO's friendly naybourhood Gestapo representative. Alltough that would have eliminated comment like the one I responded to, but I think everybody is entitled to an opinion, even if that opinion is that I shouldn't be allowed to have one (hmm..?). Anyway, again, my appologies if I offended any of the AO regulars. I wish I had access to free fiber 24h a day so I would watch AO formus like a hawk, unfortunately I don't (fortunate for others).

Anonymous: he/she youself! ;-)
Hehehe!

I wish I better understood the differences between intent and DE. So DE is just intent with a bit more added to it, something like a version of a car with or without a turbo. DE is with intent with an options package? Why have two types? Doesn't that open up competition between DE and intent? With the list of companies supporting intent, is it Amiga's plan to pull them away from intent by offering them a better version with more versatility but primarily the same thing at the core? I am trying to keep up but with so much fighting about this CPU or that hardware, as well as a lack of definitive information from the REAL guys/gals behind it, it is difficult.
-
Imagine year 86 Amiga1000 with just PC XT features. That's intent. AmigaDE is the A1000 with all too fancy features enabled, someday.
Industry/serious companies choose PC XT and intent, only freaks like Amigans choose all the bells and whistles (like 4096 colors and 4 channel stereo voice or AmigaDE's special APIs, etc.).
It is interesting to see huge amount of companies taking intent on board. It will be a minor step to push AmigaDE on top of that.
