Title: Ok, now what?
Post by: System on January 02, 2002, 01:50:00 AM
I'll bet a lot of you are simply wondering what the heck is going on here.  First, I said I was bringing the site back, then you told me that I said I wasn't, now you're seeing this.  This is getting weird.

You're right.  I thought I would give this one, final try.  My objections and the last post was NOT that I was quitting altogether.  Simply that I no longer have the time available to dedicate to the site like I want to.

So be it.  Many of you wrote to tell me that you would be willing to help moderate the site.  Here's your chance to put up or shut up.

I'll finish putting this new package into the traditional Amiga.org look/feel (though probably without all the excessive graphics).  It's up to *YOU* to populate and help us get this site back to the way it was.

I will no longer be accused of favoritism towards Amiga DE or Amiga Inc because *I* will not be the people posting to this site, nor will I have the time I used to have to work with it, so STOP BLAMING ME for Amiga Inc's delays, and the MorphOS versus the World war.

I'm putting this site back up because you, the Amiga users, demanded it.  It's up to you where it goes and what is seen here.  If you want it to succeed, lend a hand.  If not, don't.  Couldn't be simpler...

I will however retain the right to slap you if you get out of hand, or to edit badly written posts, or to change my mind altogether at a drop of the hat.  I hope that won't be the case however.

Thoughts?

I know I have mentioned this before, but it does go with the 'put up or shut up' style. Let's have a competition to decide the look of this site. If it is sucessful maybe have a new one to celebrate each new Exec Update from Bill ; )

It's not that simple.  You're talking about the difference between writing a simple HTML page and writing code which has to be interwoven with PHP and Javascript.

If you want to put together a full-size screenshot, I'll take them all, let people vote on them, and let that determine what we shoot for but I can't guarantee that what works in an HTML editor will work in real-world.

Way to go, Wayne.  Great to see you haven't given up.  It seemed such a shame you were giving up as things really seem to be hotting up lately. Im sure a BIG announcement is just round T'Corner.

Btw
This package looks prettier than the last one  :-)

... Not crazy about the use of javascript. I like sites accessible, and do not find javascript sites accessable. Glad to see you back Wayne.   Take care - Charlene (vht-can)

Can't do anything about the Javascript except recommend the use of a real Web client.  Of course the Amiga doesn't have one, so I'm at a loss for what to do.

I wouldn't worry about the JavaScript "issue" as these days, it is mostly a non-issue.  IMO, if you can't be arsed to use a modern browser, you deserve to be limited.

There are too many new, good w3c standards for us to be stuck in the dark ages and JS is really coming into maturity, finally.  We need to LOOK good and FEEL good, not just BE good. ;)  JS gives us the ability to make a good layout look even better.

Anyways, as far as this package goes, I like it best of all those you've tried so far.

As I've offered before, Wayne, if you find a problem to cannot figure out or need a hand with problem code, just shout.

Wayne,

I'm glad you decided to give it another chance;-).
I remember you owe me some banner designs. At that time I was a bit busy with some other work and then saw Amiga.org getting hacked and shut down, which discouraged me.

I was waiting for the right time to offer help again :)

Regarding the graphics design, I still have all the previous elements (part of the previous design). See the link below:

Amiga.org New GUI (http://simoami.freeservers.com/newgui.html)

I can also make another design which fits better with the actual layout, if you want.

In addition to HTML, XML, XHTML, Cross-Browser DHTML (CSS, Javascript and DOM), I have good experience in PHP and can handle complex coding!

So if you consider, I'll be really happy to help. :-)

Current Amiga browsers handle javascript.  I'm using IBrowse with no major problems.

Glad to see you haven't thrown in the towel all together.  AO has always been my favorite Amiga site.  Thanks for all the hard work in the past.  Hopefully our community will be able to keep up with the quality we're used to from AO. :)

I registered. Just for you Wayne. For old times:)

I've been away from the Amiga for a long time. Who won that World War anyway?

This site looks something like PostNuke. I like it!

Wayne,

Glad to see you back up here. I've not had an easy time trying to
translate what I want to read at Amiga-news.de. I hope this one
withstands the hackers.

I've still got to get that Pay-Pal donation off to you. I hope others
will, too. I know you won't post about that, . .  hope you don't mind
that I've suggested it to others reading here.

Paul

Sounds fair enough.

Ok guys, it's time to make a difference.
...Guys?

offtopic:
Those avatars are really cool. Infact this whole package is really cool. Well, I just say that because I found that MegaMan avatar, but hey, I'm only human.

Yeah Wayne! Finally you got it! The actual design is cool! The performance of this system seems well to me!
I couldn't believe, you were leaving. For many months I didn't visit any other Amiga-news-site. I'm happy you decided to go on and not to close up.

That's the WAYNE we know!!!
You're great, man!

Why not use eZ publish? :(  :-?
Title: Re: Why not using EZpublish?
Post by: Chathurawind on February 14, 2002, 10:21:46 AM
According to Wayne the EZpackage was too big with too many things to configure. And the documentation wasn't great either.

This package on the other hand seems to need no configuration and is VERY intuitive. And, oh, the avatars rule big time!

For those looking for info on this CMS:
Xoops Official Website (http://xoops.sourceforge.net/modules/news/article.php?storyid=10)

I have to agree with the majority of the comments. I like this one the best. It seems very suitable, even in its default form. I really like the flexi2 theme, can't wait for the AO one.

Hi Wayne,

As first impressions go, this one's great! None of the excess clutter of the last one that screamed "Call before midnight tonight!" Maybe that could have been fixed, but I much prefer the simpler look and feel of this. If this package will honestly get the job done, stick with it.

Even in modified form, I want Amiga.org to succeed. I just hate it when terrorists, cyber or otherwise prevail.

           Best,

The style is great (great job Wayne!) - but isn't that almost irrelevant? The important part is that the site doesn't get taken down again.
Please define 'moderate' - if it means dealing with message content and administration like that, then I'm willing to help. If we're talking coding, then I'm afraid I can't help - I'm a hardware man myself. Give us a mail if you think I can help.
Regards, and HELLO!!!
Alphonsus.

I've got to admire your tenacity!  keep up the good work and I do hope you get help.  BTW the most help I can be is to NOT try to do anything..grin  I tend to screw up anything I do on the web...

One note though -- If this site did nothing but copy whats on the official site it would be great.  The Amiga .com loads so slow half the time I give up.  This site loads fast.  Everyone I know would come here to save time if nothing else...bigger grin.

Bear (I'll be back in another six months or when the next promise is made)

Great, but there seems to be something seriously wrong with the code though. I haven't yet tested it with any of the browsers on my Amiga, but with Mozilla and Galeon (and I suppose any other browser using the Gecko engine) I get white text on white/light-grey background.
This (http://medstud.gu.se/~mair/lager/aorg-galeon.png) is what this thread looks like in Galeon 1.0.2 (moz 0.9.7), and this (http://medstud.gu.se/~mair/lager/aorg-netscape.png) is Netscape 4.78.

Yeah, at least now when I'm on a fast machine with a fast connection. Also, I'd like to see more anti-democratic massmurdering para-military terrorists as avatars. Right now, there's only Ernesto "Che" Guevara.

Ah, much better now. Then it's just a problem for people who aren't logged in and those using the default theme...

I popped into the new site on the pc, read the cheif bottlewasher
post, and immediatly came in on Voyager.  Wayne, most of the functions
work with the most current versions of the Amiga Browsers.  (they
really aren't in the dark ages any more, even if they have some
problems).  Just keep in mind that Amigas don't have a JVM.

Skipping that, I think the site will be just fine when some amiga.org
graphics are introduced.  Otherwise, it works and looks good.  I.E.,
don't lose sight of the forest because of the trees.  Or was that, if
it ain't broke don't fix it?  Anyway, it looks good!

I tried it with the Voyager 3.3 beta, the current one, and things looked fine. Well, kinda. I didn't get any backgrounds. I found it only worked on gifs. eh, betas. Oh, and got two javascript errors, er, whatever they are calling javascript these days. I always felt Javascript was a rather miss leading name.
