Ok, thanks for all your help so far, my friends pC and amiga are networked, and I'm able to share files (one way at least, I have to register miamiDX). I have given up on the existing NTL line and modem and ordered a new package, which is getting installed on wednesday. The two computers are connected via a hub, but someone told me that a router is necessary to connect both computers (or iven more in the future) to the internet. Is this right? I'd rather not shell out more money if I don't have to. I'm sure I read in the tutorial htmls I got from mediator site that I can configure my amiga to act as a gateway and have all the other computers connect to that. possible? Pros/cons?
PS this has to be the most amout of "get my amiga online" type messages I've ever seen on a.org! :-o

It you are going via a phone line Broad band, then the Binatone ADSL2000 router modem is what you need.
The router modem plugs into the phone line and into your network hub. It will DHCP all the network settings for you and you get ADSL Broadband conection which will be shared aross the whole network.
You can pick one of these puppies up for around £50.

A "router" of some sort is necessary, but this does not have to be a dedicated hardware router. Both your Amiga and your PC can be set up to share your internet connection, and you only need to point the second system to the one doing the sharing as a "gateway".
Precisely how you do this depends on which machine is directly connected to the Internet, and what OS you are running on that machine.

Having bought a D-link DI-604 router the other day, I must
say it's something to recommend. It's configurable through
a normal web-browser, so you need no drivers or anything
(always a problem when Amiga is concerned). The only
thing is that it might require a more modern browser to
setup - so configure using your PC. It sits
between the internet and up to four of your computers
(each must have an ethernet card). Took me some five
minutes to setup, and now my Amiga4000, the
Linux/Windows box, and the AmigaOne-XEG4 all link up
without any big problems (ironically, Windows is the only
one having problems to connect at this point, despite Linux
on another partition works flawlessly).

I'm running os3.9 on my amiga, friends PC is running 98. WHich would be better to directly connect to the net? (i would prefer my amiga to act as gateway) Anyone done this using either genesis (Iwould prefer to use this if possible, as I don't want to register MiamiDX when I have the full genesis thnat came with os3.9) or Miami?

Check out Amiga-News.de or Altavista...
I found somthing here http://www.stud.fh-hannover.de/~eckardt/genesiseng.htm

By the way.. It has been impossible to register MiamiDX for quite some time now. I tried repeatedly to register a couple of years ago and eventually gave up.
