Title: Need a bit of help on the 600
Post by: quarkx on May 29, 2009, 04:24:28 PM
Hi all, I got a A600 in this week and I put in the 340 meg drive that the owner sent me. I am trying to install the drive (under 2.1) but the drive is not recognized (of course). Is there any generic settings I can install this under?
The drive is a Mini Stor 340. as you can see by the picture, there are no "settings" or specs on the drive. I have hunted through Google, but there is nothing on it. Thanks.

What do you mean by not recognised? Using HDToolbox, make sure in tooltypes that the device=scsi.device. You should then be able to install and format her. *Should* being the operative word. I've got two HD's here that for whatever reasons are completely useless to an Amiga. I wonder if the HD you have has been changed/modified to the point the Amiga doesn't want to play with it.

Oh and HDtoolbox should be able to determine its proper size, assuming you can get it to cooperate. Just click the 'read drive config' gadget or whatever it is called.

Thanks, Save,
Will look into it, there was something listed under SCSI, but I switched it to AT (Assuming it would be because of IDE), will give that a go.

Yeah, this has come up lots. That was pretty creative of you, but the Amiga's IDE port still needs scsi.device pointed to it. Really, really strange - but true! Also, be careful when playing around with that tiny 2.5" HD cable. It's pretty easy to insert it the wrong way.

Which Kickstart version you have might be of relevance too...

I put kickstart 3.1 in yesterday, I am still debating what workbench to install.
@save, did what you said, it only shows the drive at 84 megs not 340! I guess I will live with that for now.

Also, another dumb question, but my workbench 3.1 disks (i have 3 factory copies and all 3) are toast (just the work bench disk). I have a coppie on .Iha file. what do I need to do to make a disk, just copy as is?
Convert it to .DMS or unpack it and copy the unpackaged version to disk?

If the .lha file is an archive of the entire original disk then I think you should be able to just extract it directly to a floppy, or you could extract it somewhere else and then copy the contents of that extracted directory. Converting it to a .dms file first is quite pointless, imo.

Since you've got a KS 3.1 ROM, may as well use WB 3.1 too. So HDToolBox, after doing a read from the drive only shows 84mb? That sucks. And you're positive you're looking at the total drive size, not just a partition? When you go to install that drive, now you can play with the head & cylinder settings to force HDToolBox to see it as a 340mb drive. Change the cylinders until the size is a few mb shy of 340. Save and reboot. You should then be able to make use of the entire capacity and partition away...

Sounds good, I was thinking 3.0 because this A600 has no ram expansion YET. but I will go 3.1
