Title: Ok, so what's next guys?
Post by: Wayne on May 25, 2009, 03:15:18 AM
Hi guys,

You have your new forums which -- thankfully -- you didn't send Guido to my house for retribution.  You have the gallery back, you have classifieds.  You have a public calendar, private albums (like your own flickr) and you have Social Groups (like SIGs).

On my plate, I have News, Links, and everything else in the to do (http://www.amiga.org/forums/project.php) list, but what else is there?  What else can I add to this site that you guys want that's not already on the to-do list?

Hell, for that matter, feel free to browse through vBulletin.org's MOD collection to see if there's anything you think is missing.  If you find something, please add it to the to do list (http://www.amiga.org/forums/project.php) as a feature request, include the URL to the page where you found it, and I'll see what I can do.

Off limits for the moment are improvements to the mobile page (unless you find a better theme) and changes to the core code, since they would trap us into where we couldn't upgrade any more.

Otherwise, let's have fun.

Wayne

Would be cool if we could all have our choice of @amiga.org email addresses, even if everything coming in were forwarded immediately to our own isp address.

Why don't you take a break and catch your breath while nobody's whinging? ;)

Once you've had a well earned rest, I wouldn't mind seeing the comics return :)

My suggestion would be just to move the log-in element on the start page from the middle to the sides, saving the visitors some scrolling to see all recent forum topics.

Here are a few Mods that look interesting:

Video-Directory Remixed (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=200819)

A place for users to catalogue their youtube video collections.

I can see at least one user (http://www.amiga.org/forums/showthread.php?t=41126) who would find it immensely useful to catalogue his games videos.

..........................

Article Forums (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=211638)

This could be a possible solution to creating an article section. Demo can be seen here  (http://www.bananalive.co.cc/articles.php)

......................

And finally, I hope we don't have to use this but if doomy or his ilk plagues the site again we may just have the perfect solution in this next mod:

Miserable Users (http://www.vbulletin.org/forum/showthread.php?t=197484)

.............................

I've submitted all three of them to the Project Manager for consideration.

If it weren't a violation of federal law now, I might consider it.  I work for "the man" now, and he likes to keep me down.  :afro:

For those of you whinging over the front page format, please note the "customize this page" link on the top right hand side and make it your own.

:)

Wayne, for God's sake, take a day off ;) In all seriousness, thanks for your ongoing hard work. It really is very much appreciated.

Is it possible to use the customise mode to remove elements from the page? I could only work out how to move them around.

Unfortunately the only option is to shrink them down.  Moving them around is one thing (a simple cookie to keep up with their movements).  Removing them is a whole different ball of wax.

No problem. I've moved the unwanted ones underneath the news items so they don't get in the way. Thanks again :)

Is it me or is there no RSS? I would like to add the News Forum to my phone so that I get notified on any new news items.

I'm not sure if it is a valid RSS feed but you can track the news here:

Actually you might want to submit a request in the project tracker/Bug reporter (http://www.amiga.org/forums/project.php?projectid=1) asking for RSS feeds to be enabled.
Title: Re: Ok, so what's next guys?
Post by: GadgetMaster on May 26, 2009, 11:44:33 AM
OK scratch that last request.

I've found the feeds :D

http://www.amiga.org/forums/external.php?type=rss For general feeds.

And

http://www.amiga.org/forums/external.php?f=2?type=rss  for the specific news forum.

Actually just insert any forum number after the F=  to get that forum's particular feed.

Maybe this info should be added to the FAQ (http://www.amiga.org/forums/faq.php?faq=vb3_board_usage#faq_vb3_rss_podcasting) if there isn't a simpler way of doing it.

Thanks, shrinking works. But did I get it right that also moving of elements is possible? If so, how? Dragging at least seems not to work here.

You need to put the page into a special editable mode first before dragging is possible.

Do this by clicking on the text on top right of the page that says "Customize this page (http://www.amiga.org/index.php?customizepage=1)."

Once you have fished click again on the text whiich will now say "Exit Customization Mode (http://www.amiga.org/forums/../index.php)"

Enjoy!

Would it be possible to add gallery items to the user statistics (along with the Posts, Projects, Blog, etc.)?  The gallery links back to the user profile but not the other way around.

LoRD?

Legend of the Red Dragon :)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Legend_of_the_Red_Dragon

Or its side port, LOGD (Legend of the Green Dragon) written in PHP/SQL.

Although its a good game, it is currently being milked for what its worth by Gameport, who are MILKING Majormud to death.

What Methuselas does not realize is that this forum/Website is not running a copy of Wildcat or other Door compatible BBS.

@GadgetMaster

That's exactly what I had done, but it doesn't work here (just shrinking does).

Tried with Firefox 2.0.0.20 on Windows ME as well as with Sputnik on MorphOS.

Therefore I thought some qualifier (like shift or ctrl kept pressed while moving) might be needed maybe, but that's obviously not the case either.

You are right you don't need any key combination pressed. Just clicking on the title bar of any block in when in 'edit mode' should allow you to drag it into a predefined area marked with dashed lines. (options available = left, right or centre)

AFAIK this type of layout interface uses DHTML. It may be an issue with your javascript settings on the firefox side at least.

(You use WinME :nervous:)

Try it on someone else's PC if possible.

The only idea I can come up with now is to install some add-on (if exists) that links any user to some Amiga product collection that he or she is owing.

Then the products' pages, brief description, picture, votes or comments possibly.

It took me a while to get through this all non-classic world.  Also, that's the proper place to place ads.

Okay, it's been a problem of the browser (Firefox 2). Tried version 3 on OpenSuSE on my Pegasos and there it worked. Thanks for your help.

I notice in the gallery that the CD32 no longer has it's own section.

Would it be possible to add CD32 to the Sub-Categories?

Great work on the new site.

@Wayne

A feature I'm missing from the old site would be to turn the text "Recent Threads" into a link which leads to a list with more than those ten most recent topics currently displayed on the home page.

Thus in case I'm not just overlooking a new feature again I'd be grateful if this could be implemented again. Thank you for all your efforts!

PS: Just noticed at the statistics module - Happy birthday, Wayne! :-)

Could we have the random photo page back on the fron screen ?

Thanks for all hard work

EDIT: DOhhhhhh hadnt looked at the front page today , looks like you have already done this.
Title: Re: Ok, so what's next guys?
Post by: Wayne on June 01, 2009, 01:25:43 PM
@senex,

"recent threads" is not alterable by length.  It's literally determined by the number of threads since your last login.

About the only other option will be "Todays posts" under Quick links.

... and thank you very much for the Happy Birthday.  Unfortunately I have to work today, otherwise I'd be out riding.

Well, the icons are nice, but were are the smilies (and other moving gadgets, like the banana) ? So you don't have to type them in, but simply click on them. And I also miss the colorgadget.

You need to activate the advanced editor in your options, under the control panel  :afro:

I don't show that CD32 was ever a category under the old system, but even if it were, it's been replaced by "Amiga Consoles and other" (such as CDTV, CD32, etc)

Yes, I know. Except the 'post icons', there aren't any smileys like these: http://www.mysmiley.net/free-war-smileys.php , http://www.mysmiley.net/free-fighting-smileys2.php or even http://www.mysmiley.net/free-fighting-smileys3.php

If you go into your User CP, then go to edit options, then scroll down to the bottom, you can select the "Enhanced Interface" for your editor, which gives a full box of smileys to the right of the text entry box.

Perhaps not in EVERY situation, but in most, it works just fine.

@Wayne

I think it would be so cool to have a dedicated sub-category for the CD32/CDTV stuff. :-)

I don't see the sense having these much loved Amiga's thrown along with accelerators, mice, floppy disks and literally the hundreds of other random stuff.

I've got a weird issue with dates before the "Today", "Yesterday" the system shows within threads.

In my settings, I have the date settings set for London, i.e., the date format used should be "dd/mm/yyyy" but it actually appears to be using some weird-ass "mm/dd/yyyy" setting!
