Title: Gallery back online
Post by: Wayne on May 23, 2009, 02:57:31 AM
Thanks to Karlos, the image gallery (http://www.amiga.org/gallery) is now back online with all the data and images from the old site.

Caveats:

Old Amiga Events images
Because the image gallery represents so much hard drive space (over 1/2 our allotted space on the server), I (Wayne) made the conscious choice not to import the images from the old Amiga events at this time.   They are still backed up and can be restored later, but right now we thought it best to concentrate on the other images.

Orphaned images were not imported.
These include images where the user account no longer exists under vBulletin, or where the image was never attributed to a user.

For some reason we can not yet understand, There are absolutely no user comments on photos anywhere in the database since 2004.
The database has NOT been changed, or altered in any way since the transition to vBulletin.  There was just something that happened 5 years ago (maybe an upgrade) which changed where myalbum (the module) stored said comments and neither Karlos nor I have been able to find them as of yet.  When / if we do, we'll upload them later.

--------
Everyone.  Take a moment to thank Karlos for the incredible work he's done for the site.  I know I can't possibly thank him enough, so I need your help.

Thankyou Karlos, Wayne, and anybody else who had a hand in this. In less than a week after transition to an alien format. God damn, that's some good work.

Cue twilight zone soundtrack :)

To add to the caveat list, image ranking statistics couldn't readily be imported. If, after everything else, we figure out where the missing comments went, then I'll see what can be done about that.

Is that when the toes stick together? I've heard a clean sock can get "dirty" in a minute and thirty seconds.

I hope they're not Kees' Amiga socks!

Thanks Wayne and Karlos, although it's sad to see those pics of Dave in his Hawaiian shirts gone.

Wow, amazing job guys. Can we have the feature that the users can also delete their own pictures if needed?

No tips required. I would have missed the gallery as much as the next guy.

-edit-

Actually, if anybody does want to give a tip, then perhaps a donation to OCA (see sig) or feed the amiga.org kitty

-/edit-

Just a note to make. It seems the new gallery allows you to edit your old content, which is a pretty nice feature.

However, I would ask that people don't until we've had a chance to track down the missing comments. The reason is that the only connection between the old gallery and the new is in the physical name of the image file. If that changes, we won't be able to match up any of the missing comments.

I'd like this feature too. (If not, I suppose we could just overwrite images with new ones using "edit" - but "delete" would be better.)

Might it be possible to add a link for "Find all pictures of user XY" in the user profile? And maybe also a link like "see all my pictures" when I enter the gallery?

That already works. If you look at any image in the gallery, in the details you can see who uploaded it. If you click on their name, you can view all the images associated with them.

-edit-

Oh wait, you mean in the view of the user's profile... Never mind, my bad.

Let's be very clear here.

There are actually two "albums" if you will.

1) The public /gallery page that was just reinstated.  Think of this like the old album in that everything is public.

2) The "album" inside your own account, which is more like what I'd equate to Flickr.  It's intended to let you upload personal pictures and to upload images for things like forum posts and news items.

So, though it may be confusing, I'll need you to clarify exactly what you're asking for.

Fixed

It seems that a site update was responsible. The update unified the comment system for all modules, such that one table held everything. My import was using the original tables that were in use before the site update.

I've just updated the gallery with the missing 5 years worth of comments. The caveats about excluded images and orphaned posts highlighted by Wayne above still apply.

That said, almost 12000 comments were translated .

Unfortunately, the rating systems were a bit too disparate still, so the images are all unrated again. Time to vote your favourites.

I still need to address the problem of posts that refer to the old gallery. This shouldn't be too dissimilar to the reference to old xoops thread issue, which has been fixed already.

Seems to work here. A search for "summer" brought up my old "summer in manchester" image.

However, you need to use a wildcard character if the word you are looking for isn't at the start.

For example, "ASCI" didn't find anything but "*ASCI*" found the ascii joke images...

well, I have the titles of the pics I want to find (from the Notification page of Olde Amiga org). So there's no need to 'guess'.

It ain't over yet...

At some point I'll need to do a link fix for the gallery. This basically involves updating all references to the old xoops myalbum module in people's posts to point to their equivalent image in photoplog. We did this for the forum section already, updating references to xoop's old newbb threads.

PS - Great work guys. The site is fantastic, i've started to forget what the old one looked like. The mobile version works well on my HTC Magic (Google Android OS).
