Title: Copies of Amiga games/apps sold as original!
Post by: krize on May 22, 2009, 03:23:18 PM
I have seen more and more games/apps for sale on ebay from a guy selling "new Amiga games" in sealed DVD cases ?

Check this auction out: Its for Scala MM400, never made into any DVD case:

http://cgi.ebay.com/SCALA-MM400-AMIGA-CD-ROM-Bargain_W0QQitemZ280341207348QQihZ018QQcategoryZ98929QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

Hardly a bargain for a simple copy.

I have reported this user, please also report him and advise people to not buy from this guy. He operates on alot of different usernames...

Really annoyin guy !! I see he have ripped off alot of user:

"Received pirated goods rather than the pictured product. Auction is misleading." A guy who bought Black Viper from him...

As you see I´ve had a run in with them myself.

I think there was a CD version of Scala. The local tv station where I lived used amiga, and they had it I think.

My story ended happily as the seller shipped me an original in the end.

"You will receive an AMIGA CD-R ROM in a generic casing similar to that shown."

In small text at the bottom of the description, but at least he admits its a pirated copy.

Does Scala MM400 need the dongle to run?  If so, how is the pirate on ebay able to sell copies and get them to run without the dongle?

This ebay listing is from one of many drop-ship sellers being supplied by a huge counterfeit ring running out of Swindon by former Amiga shop owners. They counterfeit everything from videos to Amiga to consoles and PC.

I reported these guys several times to their ISP, the local police and trading standards. There is lots of information about these people, they have not tried to hide their identities. They make hundreds of thousands of pounds every year through counterfeits.

Someone needs to bring them down. Watchdog or someone.

I contacted Scala (counterfeit Scala MM400) and Nintendo (Super Mario XP).

But why amigakit doesn't report this illegal business ?
It's a loss for them too...

Because once you've done it once, and they effectively say "Software counterfeiting? No-longer on sale? So what? We do not care!" you become disillusioned. Even Codemasters were not interested.

What it needs is an en-mass report to the TV show watchdog, or the OFT.

Preferably with the backing of a copyright owner.

good because there are still a few games and apps I would like to have.
The original owners don't care so why should I care?

Why you should care ? Why pay to someone who got no rights to sell these products ?? Then to just to download is much better..

Hell who want a fake copy when buying a "new" game? They make a lot of money on this, hope someone gets them out of business!

I prefere the Elvis 501 jeans over the Levis 501 :-P

Blah, seriously. It´s not if the lisence holders care. But if you´re destroying someones business. Like AmigaKit in this case who is selling Scala MM400.

There is still NOS out there of many titles, and people have invested in buying that NOS and selling it to us as a service, rather than seeing stockists just dump it in s skip which has happened in many cases. These people who is selling the NOS have storage costs and all other kind of normal costs in relations to running a business. These are the ones you are hurting.

Like the reprod run of CompPro joystick, and many other products out of Jens´shop are funded by these businesses. If they have no insentive for providing NOS of old products, we´ll see a much poorer amiga market than it is.

Now, I´m no angel. And I get my amiga software from "other sources". But only after having made sure that the software I´m after isn´t available at an amiga dealer or ebay (legal). And once in a while I do make an effort to see if they have gotten it in.

Thats why the people who sell pirated copies on ebay are the lowest scum in the amiga community. And we have to draw a line at least there.

"Why you should care ? Why pay to someone who got no rights to sell these products ?? Then to just to download is much better.."

if it is no longer available anywhere else what is the problem? I have thousands of dollars of registered software that no longer is supported, hell my 3 web browsers refuse to work and I paid the full price for all 3 (A web, Voyager and I browse) I tried to upgrade Voyager but I didn't like that they could access my computer when running it.
Aweb has a serious Font problem now and I browse just doesn't work, been a couple of years since I gave up on them.

I have to use my PC to get files then send through email because Clanoto's and Larson's networking packages are a joke. (and a 50 dollar upgrad got you a CD of the same package I already owned) I also have a delfina sound card that is crap, 149 bucks and all it does is play the music on CD's, they told me my 040 was not fast enough, so I bought an 060, then they admitted that version 1.1 is junk, sorry, you will have to buy the new version.
And just try to remove that stupid sound file they somehow installed on boot up. I'm not a programmer but that was when my web browsers all quit working properly.

Imagine 2.0, a broken program from day 1, couldn't even render the cow following the instructions. But, if you send us 50 bucks every year we will send you more broken programs, opps we went PC.

Every word processing or desk top program for the Amiga prints like crap, so I bought a 100 dollar Pro Print program that will make the printer work properly, and guess what, it didn't. They should have claimed it was just a dithering program, I can use TV Paint for that, I have pagestream 3.0 but it is overkill to just type a letter and adjust every rn that is in the document. Can't anyone kern? My commodore 64 prints better then the Amiga.

How about Amiga OS 3.5, after you buy it they tell you it doesn't work with a Warp 040 card, very nice of them, then when you go public they accuse you of having a pirated version, well I bought the CD from Compuquik. Randy is a great person, they didn't even bother to tell him it had problems with a Warp 0404 board.
I had one heck of a time restoring my system to get it to work again and I use my Amiga for a business.

"Hell who want a fake copy when buying a "new" game? They make a lot of money on this, hope someone gets them out of business!"

The only "game" I desire is Lemmings and the only reason is for the grankids.
If I want to play a game I'll use my playstation.

the only software I see myself buying new is the ImageFX the guys sell on Ebay and I'm hoping it will work on my 3000T 060 PicassoII card, I know they were big CybergaphX fans which is why I am taking my time on deciding if I want to try an upgrade.

How about RTG, what a hype, I buy Imagemaster RTG only to find out that I still have to use ECS screens, it will not promote to my PicassoII card, RTG, they left out an O & A
ROTGA  Rip Off The Guy Again What good is a 24 bit program if it only works in 32 colors?
Fantastic program I still use it but it sucks to have to save a file and view it with V Tek to see if it turned out the way you wanted.

I have learned that upgrades are not always better. (Pagestream 2.2 is better for me then 4.0 and TV Paint 2.0 is better then 3.?) The other software I want to buy is Calagri's rendering program, I haven't seen that in decades for the Amiga.

That is just off the top of my head, I won't turn around and start listing programs still sitting on my shelf that don't work as advertised.

If it is abandon ware then it is abandoned.

BEST WAY TO SHUT HIM DOWN?  We all buy and pay with PayPal.  We receive the bootleg product and immediately file a PayPal dispute for a refund, claiming product is a fake (and it is).  eBay/PayPal will not want to deal with many such claims and will likely take the problem seriously and shut him down.  Thoughts?

It's not "epic marketing" is it, as I recall they had a few other renamed ventures later on? I remember buying some software from them, must have been 10 years ago back in the day of AmigaFormat and they shipped me a counterfeit copy. Total c*nts.

@jsixis
1. Your personal feelings about the quality or compatibility of those particular pieces of software are completely irrelevant to this discussion
2. Buyers and sellers of software are not at liberty to decide when a piece of software has become "abandonware"
3. Since you ask what the problem is, you seem to have overlooked the fact that the seller claimed that they were selling original software when in fact it is not. Regardless of your feelings about selling unlicensed copies of this software, the problem is that the buyer did not get what was advertised.
