Title: network between Amiga2000 and Windows98se
Post by: GoodLook on September 18, 2003, 10:00:05 AM
Hi,

I just picked up my old Amiga2000. (nice to see him back, just running fine....nostalgy)
now I want to transfert all data to my PC.

I have a ISA slot SMC1993 8216C B 1896 Network Card
Is it possible to pot this peace into my Amiga and so make a network ? (it fits but is it ISA ?)
Do I need special drivers ?
And then the most difficult one i gess, how do I setup this network????? using UTP)cable? Coax?

I tried PC2AMIGA, It works but always and continiously packet size problems :hammer:

Hope Someone can help......

greetings,
GoodLook, from Belgium

Hello!!!!
To use in ISA card in an A2000 you will need a bridgeboard, since the ISA expansion slots are not connected to the main bus.

You will need special drivers too - you might have to check aminet for those, I wouldn't know much about that part.

I don't know about the network card, but I doubt it.  I know very little about A2k hardware.  As for the software side of things, do you know how to set up a TCP/IP network?  Have you done anything along those lines, Internet access wise on your Amiga before?

My A1200 <-> PC solution was as follows: PCMCIA NIC in A1200, cnet.device driver off aminet, Miami, FTP service on my PC, then FTPMount on the A1200 (I found that very few FTP clients worked properly, possibly an issue with talking to MS IIS FTP?, I'd like to know).

@GoodLook

Just remember that if you can't get that setup going for whatever reason, there is always the option of using a null-modem cable! ;-)
It's always a very easy and cheap option! :-)

Maybe I should use my nulmodem PAR cable.
but whit PC2AMIGA and OPUSdir or Just copying from maps gives me to much packet losses.

what is the best way to bring over those files ?
are there other nice programs to do so ? :-o

I once(~3 years ago) copied over 100s of megabytes of data between Amiga and an x86 machine over the serial ports.

(I think I was using "PC2AMIGA")

Just make sure the cables are not too long.

Besides sneakernet thats probably the best way for you.

BTW, how long were your cables?

my cable is  7 meter. I make myself a serial version.
I hope this gives me no packet losses. Or is my par cable to long?

Your par cable probably is too long, you cant make parallel cables quite as long as serial. The bits might not all arive at the same time! ;-)

Make a serial cross-over cable, and make it about half that length (or less).
The shorter it is the more reliable it should be at higher speeds.

I remember when I made a null-modem cable and connected it up to a neighbors computer. Not the next-door neighbor - one who lived a bit further away. I couldn't tell you how long the cable is, however it wraped around a number of other people fences and I could only use clock speeds of upto abou 1200bps.

get a cd burner and move the files easily with
makecd or burnit on amiga. i use a panasonic
scsi cd burner here. just an alternative method.

I have a very long null modem cable that reached from one corner of my parents house upstairs, to the diagonally opposite room downstairs, with slack to spare (they have a large detached house). I successfully transferred files and data at 38400 over it, and even used it for games of stunt car racer.. this was many years ago now, though.

You expect the transfer to finish anytime soon?
