Title: What is the best Internet Browser for the Classic Amiga OS3.9
Post by: cehofer on May 15, 2009, 05:13:25 PM
I am currently using the Aweb that came with OS3.9 but it seems limited and no updates 3.4 is it.  I see Ibrowse has 2.4 but it is not available to new customers.  I use to use Voyager 2.9 maybe but it seems the key has expired.  I would renew it with the latest version if Voyager is the best one.

I use the 1/2 hour limited version of iBrowse 2.4. If we had a keyfile, a few more features would open up and the time limit would cease. Still, I believe that iBrowse is the best browser for our Legacy machines.

I have Ibrowse 1.x from when it first came out that i paid for.  Too bad I cannot upgrade it to 2.x.  The website says 2.x users can upgrade to 2.4 free

iBrowse 2.4 is still far the best web browser for classic Amigas in my opinion.

So why isn't Ibrowse for sale anymore?  Are they having key generation problems?

The IBrowse mess is a combination of IOSpirit leaving the market and the lead developer/owner being pretty much unavailable. You can probably get a more up-to-date answer from the mailing list.

AWeb (http://aweb.sunsite.dk) has seen some incremental improvements since 3.4. It's lacking in the UI department (no tabbed browsing), but I think its page rendering capabilities are on par with IBrowse's.

For me, IBrowse 2.4 is also still the best browser on OS3.x .

AWeb is free and available. Get the 3.5.09 as Matt_H suggests...

http://aweb.sunsite.dk/

It is also still being developed although slowly. Hopefully the developers will release a newer version soon even though it only has minor changes and bug fixes. It's certainly on par with Ibrowse but it's best to own both as one or the other handles some things better. Which you prefer usually depends on if you like MUI or not. Those that like MUI like Ibrowse and those that don't prefer AWeb. I like AWeb better but Ibrowse is good too. Either with CSS support would be a God send.

@analogkid

 It's off the topic but I love the Geddy Lee icon. You have good taste! :-)

AWeb seems to stink badly, even the demo iBrowse is better.  However, the registered iBrowse is even better than that.

I tried that latest version of AWEB for my AGA 1200 030/50 and found that even the demo version of IBrowse was better (faster/better rendering).

I'm using IBrowse 2.4 now, and surely it is the best browsing experience for classic Amigas, although since there seems to be no development going on, and no intention of ever letting anyone register the program again, it may not be very useful for you unless you pirate it (which I suspect is happening a LOT these days, since people have no other choice). AWeb is good, but not as good as IBrowse, but since it's still developed and opensource, it's possible it could overtake IBrowse soon enough.
