Title: G 4 Heat issues ?
Post by: Athlon on September 17, 2003, 04:10:48 PM
I have heard from a reliable source thet some G4 CPUs have heat issues. Has anyone else heard or experienced any such problems with a G4 ? :-?

G4s have a low tolerance for heat, however, they produce very little heat.  IIRC, they shouldn't reach 40C.

As far as I'm concerned, nothing a big solid copper heatsink and a 3000RPM fan wouldn't fix :-)

the summer cauzed quite a stirr indeed , but i had no needs to put a fan in it.

my mac friends had to....though.

remeber u can always put a bigger fan in if u want to , especially if you live in spain/greece/italy etc.

anyway the winter is here now so ... :)

The  fan and heatsink seemed ok on my amigaone G4 but the heatsink is not as tight a fit as any pc cpu fan.

heat issues

is it related to the bad thermic paste some people used ? I can't remember exactly...

It does irritate me a bit that PPC mobo makers don't take a few leaves from x86 books, particularly with respect to heatsinks.

For example, making it possible for a Socket 7 heatsink/fan to be used on a PPC CPU doesn't necessarily mean having the same socket, it just means having clips in the right places.  Then the issue of cooling in PPC machines becomes much easier to address, and solutions far more widely, and cheaply available.

While PPC CPUs don't pump out as much heat, they can't take the heat as well as x86 CPUs can.  I wonder if the 970 has had any modifications in this respect.
