Title: Need an A500+ Backup Battery
Post by: nac on September 17, 2003, 03:50:28 PM
The battery in my A500+ leaked while it was in storage and it caused the machine to fail to boot.  I had checked all the removeable chips and anything that came off but it was due to the crusty build up around the battery posts.

I need to get hold of a replacement, does anyone know the specs of the battery or where I can get hold of one in the UK?

Thanks.

A dead, removed, or even incorrect battery won't cause a boot failure... I suspect the machine is very dead.. :-(

Where is the battery in a500+ located? I know that in a500 it is usually mounted on the memory chip in the expanison slot, then i would guess that only the memory card is dead, while machine itself is intact. If it is located in the machine itself, then things might be worse  :-(

will it boot with the 512k expanison removed?
you can get a lithium battery from a computer shop with the same voltage,
this is what i did on my a1200 and a500 512k expanision card. other places you
might find the battery walmart/radio shack.

IIRC, the A500+ has a battery on the mobo.

A lithium batter will work, but I believe that you need to install it with a diode so that it doesn't try and charge.

It should still boot without the battery though....

David :-?

@nac

-Edit #2- I just reread your post, it seems you do know what the battery looks like. Does it look like this?

If so those are the most common. If you get your machine working these are relatively easy to find. The problem is it sounds like your machine is seriously damaged, it should boot without a good battery. :-(

Thanks for all the info about a replacement.

The machine did start to boot with the removal of the leaked and solidified battery liquid ( at least I guess that is what it was ).

I had removed every removable chip and checked for bad contacts. I had taken the 1Mb expansion board out and also the accelerator board but it was only when I removed the goo on the battery post and board below it that the machine breathed once more.

Perhaps this goo was creating a short on another component?

I was very relived that it still works.

And why did it take so long for me to reply to all these posts? Becasue my PC decided that it wouldnt boot anymore, although to be fair the HD failed.

Thanks again.

I have replaced the leaky battery with a 3V lithium type ( with diode ) as instructed in the the file LITHBATT.lha on Aminet.

Works fine.

I have started instructing all my Amiga owning friends to check the batterys.

Got one! Vrrrrroooooooooom Vrrrroooom etc.

If I am right its a 28Mhz 020 with and FPU. I used to have another type which was only a 14Mhz 020 with no FPU.  Its a shame it doesnt really speed up the redraw in Workbench but things like Gloom fly alone (compared to bog standard A500).

It also has an Alfapower HD unit that plugs into the side expansion port and hanging off the back of that there is a a CD drive.   I fitted a switch on the back of the A500 ( next to the mouse port) that enables me to switch between OS's. This used to switch between CPU's on my old accelerator board as it also held the 68000 as well as the 68020 but I cant remember what that board was called.

I had beard that it was possible to connect a graphics card to the A500 but I never found one. So I gave it a Flicker Fixer and Scandoubler as the next best thing.

Me very happy, yes. It doesnt get a lot of use but if the Amiga had died I would be very upset. That machine gave me years of near problem free computing joy.  The PC is the all powerful master of todays computer world but I doubt any platform could have had such an effect as the Amiga or possibly the C64.

It has ADoom installed as it seemed to be the fastest version I tried.

A while back I purchased Amiga Forever and I set about copying the entire Amiga HD to the PC via a serial cable ( that was fun! ) and ADoom came over as part of that. So now I can play ADoom on the PC which if you think about it is kinda like a PC emulating an Amiga runnning a PC game.

these old amigas and the c64 left a lasting impression on me, I have around four c64 and eleven or twelve disk drives of different types and about 400 software titles, I'd like to find the c64s and disk drives/cables everything a good home. anyway they were trouble free no doubt about that.
