Title: Workbench 3.1 with 64 colours?
Post by: sim085 on April 16, 2009, 10:54:59 AM
Hi,

I found the following topic while navigating through the images uploaded in this site;

http://www.amiga.org/gallery/index.php?n=2617=1

Here workbench 3.1 is displayed using 64 colours!

Can anyone tell me if this is possible on an A500+ (8Mb FastRAM, 2Mb ChipRAM, 68000 processor)? If yes then how can I do it?

Thanks and Regards,
Sim085

Almost, not quite. You can get 32 colours, but to have 64 colours you'll need to use EHB, so it may not look as good. That's if WB3.1 supports EHB screenmodes, I'm not certain it does.

Also, don't expect it to be fast, it won't be. At all.

From where do you set the EHB mode on?

Yes, I am afraid it will be too slow for my liking (I already do not like how long NewIcons are taking to load .. around five seconds). However I am willing to give it a go :)

I guess PNG icons on such a machine would be completly out of question then ;) :P

OCS & ECS ChipSets are limited to 4 Bitplanes in Hires (640 x 256/512 laced).
Only 16 Colors on your A500+.

(EHB & HAM are LowRes only ...)

Nowhere? The only programs I tried EHB were probably DPaint and NemacIV game.

mmm ... ok,

To say the truth I was never so keen to have 64 colours on my A500+ :) I just wanted to have a feeling of it!

However just to confirm; this means that NewIcons can never be seen in their full detail on an A500+ ... since these could be anything up to 64 colour right?

sim085: Obviously, if you run a 64-color WB, NewIcons will look the best, but NewIcons still look OK with 16 colors, you may want to try the various icon packs on Aminet, etc. iirc, some NewIcons are only 16- or 32-color.
Cheers!

Thanks for that information. I will see what I can find :)

320x200. Is there any other? ;-)

Medhi Ali said it best, "No computer will ever require more than 320x200 screen resolution".  :lol:

Using the PAL:Low Res I can go up to 32 colours! However the icons look very big and Workbench becomes nearly unusable.

@Methuselas

LOL, yeah. Like most friggin cell phones are 320x200 or bigger, right?

A500 = You are trapped in a 16 color universe, I'm sorry. There are no higher dimensions.

There was a hack on aminet that forces workbench to open in Ham mode.However I do not know if it works on A500
