You can see my A1200 playing an MP3 (excuse the song lol) .
A1200 with Blizzard 1230 , 16Mb Fast ram , OS3.9

Nice video :)
But you should try Prayer btw, use it with Madonna's "Like a prayer" :-D
http://aminet.net/package/mus/play/Prayer2
It's much faster.
Give us some feedback after trying it.

I'll give it a go tomorrow :-)

We should note that the Amiga isn't doing anything else. ;-) :-P

Hi,
@dougal,
All I saw was a TV or video monitor playing a song with some stupid sort of player. Where was the A1200. I see no proof of an Amiga anywhere in the movie, some people on this site are just too nice. Even the song was unlikeable. This U tube demo was complete trash. What was the reason for this horrible demo, was there even any rhyme or reason for it.
Arrrgh!!!
I hate useless waste of bandwidth

enjoy

The continuous scan of the 15khz monitor and the interface behaviour is proof enough to me....
Hearing my first MP3 on my ol'4000/030 was fun even tho I had to type the playmp3 command everytime.
There is worst waste of bandwidth on youtube than this...or in some forum replies :P
-
I couldn't show the A1200 because it is tucked in a section of my desk quite lower than my monitor .
Even if i had to show it , there would be now way i could show the wires leading to the monitor .
The song was a crappy song because its an mp3 30 second sample from Amazon since that is all i could fit on a PC formatted 720K floppy .
I can't do better for now because i don't have enough space on my desk to setup the external CDROM and my PCMCIA CF card reader doesn't work .
And yeah i do agree that it is a waste of bandwidth to a certain extent especially to people here who know that the Amiga is capable of that and much more .
But having said that , people who use youtube and their last Amiga memories are that of 15 years ago and never since would love seeing a classic Amiga playing MP3's which probably didnt even exsist at that time .
It might even push some people to take their Amiga's out and use them again . Maybe .

Have you heared of the Mas-Player

But the Mas-Player isn't using the actual Paula sound chip from the Amiga .
I like the fact that a 15 year old Amiga is using its own hardware and playing MP3's .

True - Can I have some extra points for running OS3.5 on original commodore 3.0 Roms
-
LOL
I am cheating too ... My actual ROMS are 3.0
I run OS3.9 because i use Blizkick which when i turn on the Amiga kicks it into kickstart 3.1 :-)
But i am waiting for a kickstart 3.1 romset i bought from ebay ;-)

@Smerf... don't hold back mate, tell us how you really feel! lol
And Dougal's got a point about people not being aware of some of the Amiga's capabilities. That's one of the great things about the Amiga, she continues to surprise! Some have stuffed her and OS3.0 in the closet, are reminded of her thanks to an internet video or website like this, dust her off, install a new OS and can fall in love all over again :-)
The Amiga is like a time machine, only it keeps getting better every few years. The few times in my life I've laid a Miggy to rest for a while, *something* new: be it hardware or software related has popped up. Still going on today with the GVP products, Deneb & Indivision, just to name a few.
-
Thanks :-)
I like many of you had abandoned the Amiga way back somwhere round 1996 . I even sold my 1st Amiga 500 Plus so that i can buy a PC . Shame on me !!
But lost over a year later i regretted it badly and whilst working at a computer shop built up an Amiga 500 using parts from 2 broken A500's .
Today nearly 12 years later , i STILL have this A500 and it still works perfectly :-)
So yes , the Amiga keeps impressing me even today , especially today with all these lovely upgrades and accessories being released for it , and with such a thriving , friendly and interesting community on amiga.org .

What player are you using? Is it some secret, cause for some reason I'm not seeing it in this thread. Unless it's the "Prayer" player mentioned...

The player im using is AMPlifier V2.21 which came with OS3.9

@Dougal:
too bad old Paula Poundstone isn't up to the task of reproducing the full spectrum of the 16-bit/44.1khz file. What you're seeing are the specs of the file. This is why we need an AHI.device or the mp3@64 device!
Buy it now linky for use on your A1200's clockport! (http://cgi.ebay.com/MP3-64-MP3-hardware-decoder-f-Commodore-64-128-Amiga_W0QQitemZ120393102529QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item120393102529)
Oh, and Prayer seems like a decent mp3 player. Spartan, but decent. Looks like you MUST register it though to get higher sampling rates and stereo sound, among the rest of the options: which are all disabled. I guess a gal wrote this program?? She's beautiful according to her pic! Are you able to still register this? Before throwing $20 her way, I wish I knew if the stereo sound and higher sampling rate didn't cause major CPU slowdown. As it sits now, it flies compared to AMPlifier.
BTW HELP! My AMPlifier from OS3.9's BB2(version 2.34)... I just noticed the EQ does not work! I turn it 'on', adjust the mail level and tweak the various frequencies. Nothing. Presets button doesn't work either. What's going on here? It used to work years ago, on my A1200! lol
-
The EQ in my AMPlifier does nothing either .. Same as you , i turn it on , adjust the spectrum but nothing happens to the music .

Thanks, for the info... I was able to download it from AmiNet... Best I could get was an error "Couldn't open AHI device V4!" when i hit play. Think i did everything rght.. I installed the mpega libray to libs.. I dunno... I'm just messing around during lunch with WinUAE, I'll have to try it again later on my real amiga.
What mpega.library did you use?
-
Your mp3 player is looking for an AHI.device. Point it to Paula and it should work. Mpega.library is version 2.4.

"160Kbps 44Khz"
with Paula only and a 030? ... no way
-
Got it... Thanks...
For those interested here are the files you'll need from AMINet...
AMPlifier.lha
- Nothing to do here really, except set your decoders to Software based. Settings >> Configuration... Double Click MPEG Audio Player 0.8 in the inputs, and on the decoder tab select "Software" for both MPEG formats. Finally in your Output setup, select AHI.
mpega_library.lha
- Copy to LIBS: the appropriate file for your CPU/FPU. Rename to mpega.library
ahiusr_4.18.lha
- Just run installer.
It does work, but your MP3's will sound like your listening on an AM radio. Still pretty cool, but you won't be throwing out your iPod.
Just my $0.02, but instead of posting just a useless video how about a quick how-to for people... I think people would have found that more useful... IMHO. But your video did spark a lot of discussion.
-
Thanks brianb. I was not using that AHI user app. Since installing and pointing from X-sound to AHI in the config settings, the fidelity AND the multitasking/CPU usage is much better. S/N ratio is higher though as it seems much more of the audio spectrum is being represented. Lots of neat options apparently abound now, but changing them (ie: paula 14bit, etc) doesn't seem to do a thing and the EQ still doesn't work. I was always under the auspices I couldn't make use of ahi.device without proper hardware. Thanks for the tip!
-edit-
Wait a tick! After a reset and opening AMPlifier again, it said: "cannot open AHI device 4". Another reset later and it worked again! lol Arghhh..
-
Hey Brian ,
I would post a How-to if i actually did anything LOL
Thing is i installed nothing , downloaded nothing and did nothing .
Just copied the MP3's to my HD and loaded them up .
Everything was default from my OS3.9 installation .
Only thing i did do was change the skin from the OS3.9 theme to the winamp syle theme and only because the OS3.9 skin look ugly due to my 16 color setting .
Just my $0.02, but instead of posting just a useless video how about a quick how-to for people... I think people would have found that more useful... IMHO. But your video did spark a lot of discussion.

You can do 44Khz and more with Paula but not on screens with 15Khz refresh rate.
As for decoding you need an 060. I got a WarpEngine at 40Mhz and it can only play them in mono at full quality. And remember the WarpEngine has super fast ram acess.
So no way an 030 can do it.
