Title: Getting an GVP 2000 HC+8 working with my a4k
Post by: dandelion on September 15, 2003, 10:26:35 AM
Along with an a4000 which I recently purchased second hand it came with the added bonus of having a GVP Impact 2000 HC+8 card along with an onboard hard drive and scsi cd-rom, all of which were not working.

The early-start up expansion board describes the card as working so I don't think there's an actual problem with the card. However, HDToolbox does not recognise any other hard drives connected to computer other than the IDE drive.

Do I need any driver software to get this card working and if so where would I be able to find it/download it? Or perhaps it's because their IDs are incorrectly setup? I've never used scsi before so wouldn't have the first clue in assigning IDs to different devices (although I remember you can use up to 8 devices, one of which is the card itself). Are there any good sources of online information or perhaps even a scan of the original manual?

It would be excellent if I could get this card working along with the hard drive and CD!

Thanks

Strange.

If it's like the card I have it should have a ROM. And if it has a ROM the drivers should be in the ROM.

I would use some diagnosis software to find out what is going on.

Depends on the ROM Version.

Set the boot jumper to on.

Change HDtoolbox to use gvpscsi.device

If HD toolbox does not get it then. You need an impact 2 series HD prepdisk.

Check amiga-hardware.com too! :-)

Single click on the HDToolBox icon, and bring up the information requester.

There should be a tooltype to set the scsi device to probe (i can't remember offhand, and i'm at work with no amigas :-( ).

Maybe you need to set it to gvpscsi.device, or 2nd.scsi.device or somesuch.

Ok, things are a little clearer now and i've a few tricks to try (along with a dms file of the original install disk which might be useful!).

One other thing though, termination. I don't seem to have any terminator plugs which i'm a little confused about. Do internal devices not need termination? How would I set up say an internal HD and an internal CD? I know that the chain should be terminated at each end, so would that mean both a cd and the hd need terminating and the scsi adapter is in the middle of the chain? What happens when you add external devices? Aghh!

The internal device will need terminating.
Depending on its age it will either be two banks of resistors which you can unplug or a single jumper.

The last device on the bus is the terminating device.

But how do you know what order the devices are in?

Get the latest version of gvpscsi here (http://www.gvp-m.com/gvpmfiles/a4008.dms).

Install that, and get AmiCDFS here (http://www.aminet.net/disk/cdrom/amicdfs240.lha).

Install that, then modify the CD0 file with the lines:

device=gvpscsi.device
unit=X (where X=scsi id of CDROM drive)

...and place it in the workbench:devs/dosdrivers folder.

Reboot and enjoy!

As for termination... Terminating resistors go on the end of the cable after the last device, or turned on at the last device.
