Title: What is best screen mode for A1200 ?
Post by: dougal on April 09, 2009, 09:54:15 PM
Hi ,

I have an A1200 connected to a commodore 1084S .

It has 16mb fast ram (im upgrading to 64mb next week)
Also has a Blizzard 1230 accelerator
I am running OS3.9

Its connected to the monitor using the standard Amiga RGB cable .

My current screen mode is :640x512 Interlaced

The resolution is great and the Amiga is still fast , but the flicker from the interlace is annoying .

Is there any custom screen mode i can set it to where it has NO interlace , still looks nice and actually fits on the whole screen ?

PAL non-laced with max overscan - 724x283 - should be possible... I used to use that, it's not too bad. You might also try NTSC non-laced, again with max overscan, 724 wide and 240-odd high but at 60Hz for a slightly less flicky screen. The 1084S can't do much better (or much else).

Tried it now .

It is still interlaced and only fills in the top screen .

Then either you've done something wrong or your monitor is broken. :-)

I think something is up with the OS3.9

Monitor works fine for games and works fine with my A4000 too (Using the same cable as of my A1200).

On screen prefs i doesnt mention PAL anywhere , there is just a list of about 6 or 8 different screen modes and thats it .

Copy the PAL, NTSC, and Euro36 monitors from SYS:Storage/Monitors to SYS:Devs/Monitors.

And make sure your startup-sequence has the line C:LoadMonDrvs

Euro36 might be a little less flickery.

Thanks Matt ,

I tried them , but didn't like any of them .

Are there any hacks or custom downloadable ones that would do a nice job ?

I really need to buy the indivision , which i will when i have the money ..

Oh another question , is it true that with the indivision and connected to an LCD VGA monitor , games are jerky ?

Yeah the Indivision is the answer :)

As long as the monitor you're using will sync down to 50hz then you can run games without the jerk.

get MagicTV from Aminet and you will get a more stable picture in interlaced 640x512.

the drawback is that the mouse pointer is black and the number of colors of the WB is limited to 16.

16 colours is all you need for a decent looking Workbench. Use MagicTV until you get an Indivision AGA, it does help a bit.

I tried it but for some reason it crashes my Amiga :-(

I must be doing something wrong because my Amiga is fine .

WOW

It works wonders :-)

Only things that dont look so nice at 16 colour is the black mouse pointer and the Amidock .

But the rest looks great

And no flicker :-)

There is a program called MonED that allows adjusting your monitor driver - but care must be taken! you can hurt your monitor if you push things too far.
Having said that - I have never killed a monitor, and it has an easy to use graphic slider type interface.
I use MonEd to tweak Super 72 on my A1200 (NTSC) for an 800/600 display with no flicker.

Is that a 1084 monitor.  Can you post your moned config file?

I hate interlaced video...  I used 640x480 on my C= 1960 monitor, and now 1024x768 with my Indivision AGA (Awesome!).  I guess the 1084 will limit your options.  It's a great monitor, just not for hires workbench.

While the Indivision AGA is excellent ,

Is it a viable cheap option to get a small , say 15 inch LCD TV and connect the Amiga to it using RGB to Scart cable ?

When i connected my A1200 to my Toshiba 32inch LCD TV the display was great , even for games or Hi-Res workbench .
