Title: Mazda MX-5, cute and fun sports car!
Post by: bloodline on April 05, 2009, 09:32:28 AM
And I did :-)

Anyone here have some helpful advice now that I own an 18 year old black Mazda MX5?

-Edit- subject change to reflect the true nature of this thread :-)

Well, you could:
- Do a short course in automotive mechanics at your local tech college
- Go somewhere sunny to drive with the top down
- Have more fun than all the people who like to poke fun at MX5's?

Hm, not sure if that usage scenario is covered in the manufacturer's specifications. It is a rear wheel drive convertible, remember.

Get an 18 year old seat cover and take her for a spin ;)

Well, I've spent the last 2 days driving my MX5, managed to do 400Km :-D

I'm in love with the handling, it's nippy, responsive and turns on a dime... Once the top is down you feel brilliant, not too drafty at all. As it gets cold at night, I just turn the hot air bowers on and actually feel nice and toasty even powering down the motorway at 70mph in these cold English evenings.

Downsides: It's bumpy, bouncy and noisy... and I've bottomed out on far too many Speed bumps... I fear I'm doing some serious damage to the poor thing :-(

Everyone should have one of these :-)

I wouldn't. I've heard some really bad things about B. Just the other day an old woman was stabbed in South B. If you're already going that way, drive straight through to C. It's much nicer there.

Travelling by public transport can have its benefits.
There's this (http://www.kunsthal.nl/data/pictures/e_612.jpg) poster ad from "Prix de Rome" I see every morning when I step out of the train (http://forum.ps3life.nl/images/smilies/yum.gif)

@ Speelgoedmannetje
I understand exactly what you are saying.
I drive a Pinto. I wish I had a V8 to put in her.
Mazda has good cars. I wish I had an RX-8. I used to own a couple of Gen.1 RX-7's with rotaries.
I like them alot.

By a window sticker explaining that you're not a hairdresser?

Make sure the flexible plastic window in the top (if it's so equipped) always folds neatly when dropping the top, I let a friend borrow mine and he wasn't careful and ended up tearing the window due to it crumpling up in a way that put too much stress on the plastic.

Yeah, good advice! I've only had the car for under a month and already the little window at the back is developing a crease at the stress point :-(

Best bet is to unzip the window along the top (again, if so equipped) and let it drop before folding the top back. Kind of a pain and of course it puts stress on the zipper zipping it back up, but it lets the window lie flat.

"Oh crap, it's a girl's car!"

I didn't say they weren't fun to drive. I know a few owners, mostly of Mark I models.

You'll have fun replacing the clutch with a monotonous degree of regularity if their collective experience is anything to go by.

Mine is a Mark I, and it is a dream to drive :-)

I'm not a woman driver*... :-D

*No offense to women drivers, but I've not met one who doesn't over-rev the engine when pulling away from a full stop... no wonder clutches wear out!

Watch out for the handbrake too.

Having once owned a shiny new 1990 Miati, in blue, I thought I should chime in.  Add a good sound system, upgrade the speakers if they already haven't.  The stock is good but a CD player is mandatory!

Someone mentioned unzipping the back window before putting the top down.  Sorry, but this is the manufacturers recommendation.  I had some damage to my backwindow due to a problem when the alarm installer decided to put the top down for more room to work...

Some damage to the back window can be taken out by warming with a hair dryer on low.

Best advice, find a nice twisty road (having lived in England I know you have them handy) and go for it!

Yup, the Stock speakers absolutely suck... no bass at all... the previous owner put in a very nice SONY CD/MP3/iPod player though :-)

Yup... the MX5 was built for British country roads... I have never driven a car that handles as well as the MX5... It actually feels like the car is glued to the road, no matter how fast I go and how tight the twists and turns are... the thing never under or over steers... I'm in love ;-)
