Hi,
I have just started using WHDLoad and I found out that all games come without a proper icon. What I am doing is copy the icon file from the ADF file to the Workbench and then change the icon info file. However some games (like lemmings) started immediately without first booting in workbench and therefore such games did not have any icons. I know this may sound a stupid question but what do you people do for such games? Is there maybe some place from where I can download amiga icons?

I have never seen a WHDLoad install that did not include icons. The installer should always ask you which one you want (if there's more than one in the archive). Something must be wrong if they're not getting installed. Is your Installer up to date?
You can copy them manually, though they usually don't have .info extensions (the installer is supposed to take care of that).
Otherwise, there's this (http://aminet.net/search?query=gameicon).

What is this 'install'? WHD games must be installed? All I do is download the games from http://www.whdownload.com/ and move them to my workbench! no installation process what so ever however!
Thank you for the link :)

Could the problem be that I am using WHDownload on Workbench 2.1 and maybe the icons are meant for Workbench 3.5?
p.s. - the icons I downloaded from the given link all show the same; a small grey box with a black box in them .. seems like the icon is not found or cannot be read, but not sure!

That sounds like the icons are either newicons or glowicons. I believe newicons will work under 2.0, but I'm not sure. Glowicons I think are only for os 3.5 and up. (newicons are available on aminet, can't remember the exact name, though)

The icons used in the WHDLoad packages are NewIcons, you can download NewIcons here (http://aminet.net/package/util/wb/NewIcons46) (works with WB 2.1).

I have workbench 2.1 installed and all the WHDownload games I downloaded have the small grey box with black box type of icon. I also downloaded the above package and it tells me that I need at least Workbench 3.0! Maybe I need that to have the new icons visible?

Ok managed ... but new icons only work with workbench 3.0 > ... at least that is what it tells me during the installation! :)
Thanks to all for the help :)

Not true! Class Act, the "necessary" package to work with NewIcons needs 3.0+. Plain NewIcons work ok on mine A600, even at the time it only have ks37.300 (and Workbench 2.1, of course).
Try download Bloodwich's Classic Workbench (Green Amiga Alien Edition).

I guess I am going to take this advice since this is already the second time I am being suggested to do this :)
However on a different note; I noticed that the NewIcons are not as good looking as the icons used in the original games. I have the original Colonization which came with an installer. The icon produced by the installer (in my humble opinion) is more good looking then the "new" icon of the WHDLoad version of the same game. I uploaded an image to show the difference however it is still not in the image area.
I am not saying this to offend anyone but just to know if this is normal or else because I did something wrong.

Well, whether one icon looks better than another is largely a subjective thing; so I'm not offended ;-).
NewIcons are meant for other resolutions than "normal" WB icons. Because of that they can be too big or seem streched. Also they have a different colour layout than normal icons or MagicWB icons. You probably need more colours for your WB screen to make the NewIcons have the right colours.
I don't use the NewIcons set that comes with the installers but I use scans from the original game boxes as icon. You can download them somewhere; I forgot where but if you're interested I'm sure someone here knows!

Here is an example of how the icons look on my system:

I think I should try these icons using Classic Workbench. Maybe that makes a difference? (on WinUAE I am trying to emulate the results I would get on a real A500+)

I did find the link once ... I think I still have it in my favourites :) ... at work ;)

If you want all those NewIcons to look better, you need to increase your Workbench screenmode to High Res Interlaced with 16 colours. If the colours look off, you'll need to download FullPalette from Aminet and lock your Workbench colours.
You'd really be better off getting yourself a Kickstart 3.1 ROM. You can get cheap ROM switchers and other things here - http://www.amigamaniac.com

Can I do that on a normal Workbench? I did install Classic Workbench however I did not like it much so far.

I do have this ROM installed on my A500+! What difference does it make?
